CrunchEee 8.10.01 Release Candidate 1
Today sees the release of CrunchEee, a special version of CrunchBang Linux developed specifically for the Asus Eee PC. This new edition is similar to the “Lite” edition, but for the inclusion of a full suite of Internet applications and an Eee PC specific Linux Kernel and scripts. More details about the release candidate can be found on the forums: CrunchEee 8.10.01 Release Candidate 1.
With regards to the name, “CrunchEee” was very kindly suggested by Dan Lynch of Linux Outlaws.

This could be a life saver for those first little EeePCs. I love the speed and everything about OpenBox (and your Ubuntu OpenBox version)… SO, regarding this CrunchEee distro version…
Was wondering if the same could be done for the HP 2133. The 512 MB RAM 2133 model with the Novell SuSE on it with a 4GB SSD (got it when priced at $299 on Amazon.com and can still get them cheap in some places) has only 300 MB of disk left to use (and the about the same when you are using Ubuntu on the same disk)… they really needed to use at least an 8GB SSD. So, was wondering if CrunchBang would be faster (even if on an MLC SSD vs faster SLC SSD) on this 4GB SSD?
Of course the 2133′s most basic model with the 512 MB RAM and 4GB SSD WELL, that is plenty enough resources to run CrunchBang.
Of note: Ubuntu has a page on the 2133 and the 8.10 install… AND there is an issue where some custom work needs to be done after Ubuntu 8.10 is installed for what is needed to use the 1280×768 screen resolution AND to use the same or 1024×768 on the external VGA connector. Of course the camera and audio needs to work, as well?
Need only FireFox with Flash (and RealPlayer plugins working) and other codecs too… So? Was wondering if the Ubuntu Store where you can buy right to use codecs and DVD player software is something that can be used with CrunchBang (as would like to buy something from Ubuntu folks to support them, and be legal at the same time)? Heck, Crunchbang might get a commission from a referral sale from the Ubuntu folks if you could push a little business their way?
The preferred mobility app however for email (vs Claws) is ThunderBird …as like to have contacts and calendar stored up on an IMAP server via Sync Kolab 1.0.1
see https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/519
quote from a comment: “use with Lightning for full mobile Contacts and Calendar (v1.0.3 needed for the Calendar syncing to work properly). No more continuously Importing and Exporting the Address book between different machines” SO, — does Claws do that? I would move to Claws if it did!

Was wondering if Crunchbang, like Ubuntu, has security fixes that you get notified of, and then can be installed like when you click on the Ubuntu Upgrade arrow? SO? Does CrunchBang use Ubuntu’s security upgrade/updater notification for the OpenBox Distro as well? We like to have our boss see that Security Updater as it gives the boss peace of mind (if computer security exists it can at least exist in the imagination, and LINUX having the security update process active for the eyes to see reinforces that something is being thought about security in the background somewhere… and the boss likes that thought I guess).
And does CrunchBang allow to build an Administrative Option to “build a USB startup disk” like Ubuntu does? As I know of a Library with low RAM machines looking to build a non-persistant way to have an Ubuntu based Kiosk-like system that the next user is not exposed to the user session of the last/previous user.

Also – a way to have it easy for any ol’granny out there to insert an SD card from camera, select some photos (and like Gwenview with Kipi Plugins) email the photos where the photo is auto resized to perfect dial up compatible email size with no loss of photo quality, insert the photo into an auto opened Thunderbird email, and then the only thing to do is to address the email, subject line, some text, etc, and SEND IT. 3 steps to send photos by email.
THen the GIMP, SCRIBUS, and OPEN OFFICE 3.0 (that will also synch with Thunderbird contact list data), and you are good to go anywhere… with any size netbook loaded with OpenBox (Crunchbook Linux)!

i have been using cruncheee for a day now and i really like it a lot. I have been using ubuntu before it and wanted something just like this, cruncheee is a life saver. my computer is 701 4g surf. i made minor changes like littlefox theme for firefox it makes a lot more room for web pages. conky seemed a bit small I moved font up one and added outline to the font. other than that i added the usual/personal taste apps to the menu. i want to thank you for cruncheee now i can have 3gp videos on the actual hd. ;D

I ran this on my Acer Aspire One- Wifi functions, SD card reader seems to function…but the weird thing…
Crunchee gets MUCH worse battery life than a default ubuntu install… 1 hour and 45 minutes on a 3 cell, get 2:15 on default ubuntu, 2:30 on UNR, and 3 hours on Linpus…
Why is that?

i love your distro but find its still got all the usual debian based bugs within it,is it not at all
possible to fix and remove these long term unatended bugs,as i am never happy fully with
any debian based distro and find the cursur click freeze-ups scarey and also find that if you start messing about with any other custom theme setups than the default things get
very messy and lead to all manner of erratic faults within the GUI that render programs to
become unreliable and introduce yet more bugs,on almost every login i get some problem
that causes the mouse buttons to fail and even the keyboards stop working at times and
i am left with no other option but to hold down the power key and emergency shutdown
this will always end up with damaging the system eventually and rendering it useless!,
why after all these years are there still the same bugs around in debian/ubuntu based
linux and seem to have never been fixed,we need a proper window manager like XFCE
not the useless GNOME,KDE(kiddys desktop enviroment),Openbox, fluxbox, please could
a decent reliable version be built using XFCE as i am sure you will gain more speed and a
lot more reliabilty as well maybe then #!CB will become one of the best linux around much
like the awesome ZENWALK,which ive found the only truely reliable linux distro around!”
