Logo Competition
As stated in the first monthly newsletter, we are having a competition to create a new CrunchBang logo. From the newsletter:
We’re officially announcing a #! logo competition. This competition is open to all and you may submit as many entries as you want. We’re looking for a logo that accurately conveys the simplicity, speed and uniqueness of #! …snip…
We’ll keep the competition open until the 23rd of March 09.
Editors of #! Newsletter will narrow down the entries to three and pass the final decision over to Philip Newborough.
So, fire-up your copy of Inkscape or GIMP, get those creative juices flowing and submit your entries to this forum thread.
Notes:
- Please enter original artwork only.
- All submissions should be unencumbered — this means anyone should be able to use the logo however they see fit, including for commercial purposes.
Good luck!

I thought #! was a great logo…..
March 5th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
You already have a crisp, sharp and very distinct logo.
March 5th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
yeah, #! is a logo in itself. the fact that it can be reproduced with 2 keystrokes reflects the simplicity of the distribution perfectly. maybe instead you should look for a mascot to go together with it?

I have to agree with everyone here. You guys already have a fantastic logo.Actually, it’s the first thing that caught my eye and made me want to try this distro. It’s simple, memorable and, shall we say, retro-futuristic? In my opinion, getting rid of it would be a mistake.
I don’t know where you got the silly idea that you need to change it. Seriously…
March 7th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Agreed. At least consider the existing logo on the same basis as any new ones. I’d vote for it. Crunchbang has a great identity now and change isn’t always good – witness poor old EasyPeasy…
March 9th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
Seriously, don’t change your logo. It’s the best!
March 13th, 2009 at 9:43 am
The logo is already awesome. Why replace it? Maybe you probably just need some wallpapers or stickers.

I’m a professional graphic designer. The winning logo and logotype, in my opinion, is the one I already see at the top of the page – it’s functional, distinct and communicative. Anything more would be needless frill or decoration and would more than likely dilute an potentially strong brand rather than contribute value.

The current logo is what made me go with crunchbang. Yes, a distro has to have suitable base programs but I am a relative newbie who doesn’t know much about which programs are best. It was the login logo and the login sound that gave me a strong visceral reaction to crunchbang. I’m not even trying any of the other 100 linux distros because I can not stomach their designs. I went through the 8 pages of the competition entries and most of them made me shudder.

I’m no aesthetic guru but you’ld have to be nuts to ditch your current logo. I agree strongly with everyone here to cease this ludicrous folly.
March 23rd, 2009 at 9:25 pm
I really like #!
March 31st, 2009 at 4:44 pm
Gotta agree with everyone here; #! is a perfect logo. Simple, stylish, just like the distro itself.
April 19th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
If they will wipe #! logo, I will wipe that awesome crunchbang distribution out from my hdd :D

I too think #! is a great logo. BUT it is not likely it can be used ‘officially’, and by that I mean that # and ! both are kind of special characters: you might not be able to create a file named “#!README.txt” under windows – or register that name as a trademark (I bet you cant), if it comes to that. Or try to search for “!#” with google.
So, I know that it is just a logo and not a name. But still, special characters are always a problem.
On the other hand, it would be something different. :\

[#!] is not overs and shorts.
but, site favicon may be room for the improvement.
From a point of view of the design.
I say once again,[#!] is perfect logo.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:33 am
@Yeah: You can use “CrunchBang (Linux)” instead of “#!” everywhere where “#!” does not work.
May 2nd, 2009 at 7:55 am
@Mike: you’re right, but I think my last point “Or try to search for “!#” with google.” was the most important one.
If you watch a screencast or something and you see the logo [#!] as someone’s wallpaper and you don’t know what it stands for (‘crunchbang’) then you’ll probably try to google ‘#!’ (because you like those styled graphics on the person’s desktop and stuff) – but you might get no results at all. I know it’s just peanuts and a logo >change< is not really a good thing but it was something I wanted to mention. So, [#!] is not perfect.
May 17th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
don’t ditch #! please! it’ll catch on to google as it becomes more popular, but i honestly think #! can have a cultural influence over time.
May 26th, 2009 at 5:16 am
Why not just keep the current logo but put CrunchBang in little letters beneath it?
May 31st, 2009 at 12:16 pm
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Stick with what you have, it’s great.
July 5th, 2009 at 6:16 am
Jeez, guys, that’s not what they mean. They want someone to design a nice graphic representation of #!. That’s not the logo, that’s actually the name, just in characters. It’s like /. only AWESOMER
July 15th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
#! is already a nice one!
July 17th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
I think Ryan has the best idea. Keep the current logo, but put crunch bang underneath it so that if someone sees it for the first time, they will know what it is called and will be able to google it.
I am entering my submission >:)
July 20th, 2009 at 6:38 am
I agree with Ryan and Mason I think the logo is perfect. It should be labeled underneath the logo or somehow incorporated in the #! symbol. maybe crunch#bang! with the crunch being small and the symbols being bigger. Or perhaps #crunchbang! .Well thats my 2 cents.
August 25th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
I agree with the above, #! is already a logo. Maybe a more graphical representation of it? but keep the original fonts. Unfortunately I’m not a graphic guy, more into databases.
PS: just discovered crunchbang today, I already love it. testing som esecurity issues on it.

This is a great idea, although I already kind of like the current one. It works well on my computer so, for this reason I would like to see the logo change. The computer I have is old but upgraded from broken status to working status as of crunch bang day one today. I would like a cool new logo to go with the new box I buy it. #! is cool but the black appearance reminds me too much of the high contrast layout in Windows which is an accessibility option i tried to use but couldn’t because it hurts my eyes.
November 4th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
YES! #! is already a very good logo… actually, what does it mean?
it is so good that I was even thinking to get a tattoo of it….
November 22nd, 2009 at 1:12 am
Yeah, the current logo would be awesome as a tattoo:D
I don’t even know why you even considered changing this perfect logo.

Made a crunchbang wall paper for my computer. It’s a shot I took here in ND. Let me know what you think.
