CrunchBang 10 “Statler” r20101205
New CrunchBang Statler images are available now. The new images were built on Sunday 5th December 2010 and feature all package updates available at that time from the Debian Squeeze and CrunchBang Statler repositories.
The main focus behind this release was to incorporate the 5 months worth of package updates that have occurred since the previous Statler alpha 2 images were created. Changes to the application line-up and system defaults have been kept to a minimum. The only changes of note are:
- The artwork has been updated to reflect the recent website redesign.
- The Xfce variant now uses Xfce’s native panel by default. tint2 remains installed.
- The Openbox variant has had Orage replaced by gsimplecal.
- The Openbox variant now features johnraff’s “places” and “recent files” pipe menus.
Any existing Statler users should not need to perform a reinstall, instead a simple ‘sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade’ should suffice.
Regarding the “20101205″ thing, this release and any future Statler releases will now feature a date based revision identifier. There will not be any more “alpha” images and you should not expect to see any “beta”, “RC” or “final” images either. From this point on, if anyone needs to make a judgment as to the stability of Statler, they should check the date based identifier against the progress of Debian Squeeze.
As always with CrunchBang, this release is not recommended for anyone who requires a stable system. Anyone who uses CrunchBang should be comfortable with occasional or even frequent breakage. Remember, CrunchBang Linux could make your computer go CRUNCH! BANG! :)

hello! congratulations (to all the #! users) with the update.
> artwork has been updated
hey why not add an occasional screenshot to the news? it’s a blog after all, doesn’t have to be all business-news-column-style =D

@tivasyk, screenshots are available on the wiki, although they do need updating. Thank you for the reminder. :)

Awesome work guys. I’ve ran just about everything in the top 20 on distrowatch.com just to see what is out there and what I feel most comfortable with. I must say, I really like Crunchbang. This is an up and coming distro for sure and I’ve been recommending it to others. Thanks again, keep up the good work.

What a grand surprise and release. I have been anticipating this Debian based #! for what seems to have been an eternity. I know the wait will be worth it. Congrats to all involved in this release. Your labor of love has enhanced the Linux community at large. This tops of a wonderful year 2010 for me. I consider it a birthday present. I’m a 12/04 baby. Cheers and Recheers !!

Just finished the upgrade this morning. Statler on openbox is as lightweight and fast as ever. I really can’t do without it anymore on my netbook. The new look is sleek. Very cool. :-)

#! made GNU Linux exiting again. It is well worth The occasional “CRUNCH” because most of it works like a “BANG”! Go #! !
I am gonna write one for a friend and update mine!

Slight typo there: s/visist/visit/
Great news though!

Already using #!9.04.1 (from which I removed 44MiB of ‘bloat’ :-}): updated, I guess for the last time.
I like it a lot: it really does ‘just work’! It’s perfect for my current RAM limitations – it’s never used more than 193.74MiB of 237.03MiB available RAM. Furthermore, it accepts ALL my .deb drivers & works with all my hardware, & it tells me how my system is, all the time – nice touch. And it’s never gone ‘crunch-bang’ on me!
By way of comparison, #! installed quicker than it took LinuxMint9 FluxBox to boot-up, & that’s supposed to be a low-requirement desktop.
I like the OpenBox, especially the #! ‘non-desktop’ interpretation – like a server with invoked GUIs: neat.
I shall certainly give #!Debian a try, & if it is compatible, then perhaps the rest shall be history.
Great stuff!
(p.s. Love the non-bloated, fast-rendering homepage & website: 1st impressions do count.)

This works great on my acer 110 netbook , wireless also works. Also it was nice to find g++ and gcc also. !
thanks

Is #! going to be a rolling release? I hope it sticks to Debian stable, squeeze is going to be released soon anyway. I installed #! A2 a couple of days ago and dist-upgraded, this is really the smoothest Debian installation that I’ve ever done.

December 17th, 2010 at 2:05 pm
Hi tried to use the dist-upgrade which downloaded and installed some files but cannot see any difference, no gsimplecal or recent files.
December 17th, 2010 at 3:03 pm
@g1rnz, an upgrade will not overwrite any configuration files held in your home directory. If you would like to chat about this some more, please consider joining the forums.

“Which CrunchBang release are you running?”
“Er… the one with a long string of numbers after it.”
“But that’s all of them.”
“Er…”
Please reconsider :-). Beta, RC etc give some idea of the relative status of the different releases.
Apart from that, good work as always.
December 22nd, 2010 at 10:35 am
@Chris Watkins, but do Alpha/Beta/RC tags really provide an idea of the status of the project? Personally, I think the new revision/build date numbers give a better indication as they can be compared to the development of the parent distribution. Also, once a CrunchBang 10 “Statler” release is installed, there is no real reason to have to install again as performing an APT update should bring the system inline with any new release of the Statler series.

Hi,
I run CrunchBang Linux 9.04 in my VirtualVox virtual machine in a Windows XP host and a Mac OS X (Tiger) host. 9.04 runs perfectly in both. How do I upgrade to the new version Statler? sudo apt-get dist-upgrade is doing nothing now.
December 23rd, 2010 at 8:02 am
@Anjan, unfortunately there is no upgrade path from 9.04 to Statler.
December 24th, 2010 at 6:21 pm
I get the “/MD0 does not exist” error during the first bootup when I install Statler to a config with a regular /boot partition and a RAID0 root. There are no errors during the install. More interested in performance than data security. Besides real geeks use RAID0 and no backup strategy is for nubes…:)
The latest daily Debian testing installs and boots successfully. Any chance of updating Statler to a more recent Dedian testing build?
