CrunchBang 10 “Statler” r20110105
New CrunchBang Statler images are available now. The new images were built on Wednesday 5th January 2011 and feature all package updates available at that time from the Debian Squeeze and CrunchBang Statler repositories.
These updated Statler images feature the following changes:
- Google Chrome installed as the default browser.
- A new live-installer, as used by the LMDE project.
- Plymouth graphical boot loader enabled by default after installation.
- Improved font rendering.
- Improved post-installation script, providing optional installs of:
- Liquorix/Zen kernel.
- Sun Java(TM) Runtime Environment and browser plugin.
- Back to black artwork.
- 100s of additional plugins and filters for GIMP via the ‘gimp-plugin-registry’ package.
- Updated Dropbox packages and Thunar Dropbox extensions installed by default.
- Pino replaced by Heybuddy, a micro blogging Indenti.ca client.
- Various other minor fixes and improvements, including, but not limited to:
- Xfce menu fixed for applications requiring root privileges.
- Missing ‘wireless-tools’ package is now included.
- Viewnior image viewer rebuilt without the GNOME specific features.
- Updated Elementary icons.
Existing Statler users should not need to perform a reinstall, instead a simple ‘sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade’ should suffice.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR UNETBOOTIN USERS: CrunchBang images will more than likely fail to work if copied to USB devices with Unetbootin. Please use the recommended method for creating USB installation media.
As always with CrunchBang, this release is not recommended for anyone who requires a stable system. Anyone who uses CrunchBang should be comfortable with occasional or even frequent breakage. Remember, CrunchBang Linux could make your computer go CRUNCH! BANG! :)
If you do decide to give CrunchBang a try, please visit the forums and join the conversation. We would love to read your feedback and suggestions for improvements!

Have been more than 25 days since I stoped using Ubuntu (That distro used to eat RAM memory just like a starving pork) and Finally I got what I really wanted: Performance without sacrificing style, elegance, a comfortable programming platform, a distro based in Debian and 118 mb of RAM (of 2.8 gb) when boot.
Conky, openbox, everything is more than awesome!
#!CrunchBang Linux really #!ROCKS and I want to thank the developers.
And finally, Google chrome as default browser? that was a surprise XD! what happened with Iceweasel?
Greetings from Chihuahua, México.

If you are interested, there is a little backstory on my blog. :)

@corenominal: Thank you, I will check it out ;)

I was unable to access my camera Nikon Coolpix from Thunar so it is a no go for me. Other than that it is a nice clean fast distro. Just wish it had a more capable file manager.
January 9th, 2011 at 12:20 am
@Persev, I love Thunar and I think it makes a great default file manager, but I admit that it can be somewhat limited at times. I think you could probably of overcome your mounting issue in a number of ways, but the easiest may have been to just install Nautilus or similar.

“CrunchBang images will more than likely fail to work if copied to USB devices with Unetbootin.”
Learned this the hard way! The grub installation failed time and again when I tried installing via USB drive and Unetbootin. I ultimately just burned a bunch of installation CDs. It is actually much more convenient than USB, I had just gotten used to it in my netbook days :-D

A while back I hopped away from crunchbang (not related to crunch, just wanted to try somethings), but after reading this I can’t wait installing it again!

Google Chrome installed as the default browser.
Why not an opera?
January 15th, 2011 at 5:26 am
@alemoke; How open and free is opera?

Great job. Love the font rendering <3

It hasn’t gone ‘Crunch-Bang’ yet, although the upgrade means that I no longer have sound[?].
‘cb-welcome’ not functioning properly.
‘E: linux-image-2.6.32-5-686: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 128′.
Apart from that, well, it’s still the best Debian [IMHO]: OpenBox is THE business!

Oh my god… Chrome By Google© as default browser??? It is like the most horrible thing that happened to crunchbang, ever!
Where is the freedom in Crunchbang now?
Let’s go back to debian :/

add the default firewall?on cb-welcome script?

Chrome is bad for you. Use FF instead.

I would put it that way: why chrome, but not chromium? I really hate all these privacy issues, chromium is at least more secure than chrome. So sad for Firefox, used to love it :(
January 19th, 2011 at 4:04 pm
I installed both the Openbox and XFCE version from an USB with Unetbootin. I had no problems what so ever :) Lovely distro btw, it boots up with only 60 MB of RAM and still manages to look cool. Nice job!
January 19th, 2011 at 4:06 pm
@damnated, I am glad to read that Unetbootin worked for you. Which version did you use?
January 19th, 2011 at 5:15 pm
I used the one included in the Ubuntu Lucid repos, 408-1ubuntu0.10.04.2

Why you guys are complaining about Chrome? If you don’t like it, you can remove it and install Firefox.

{#! OpenBox – I don’t care for RAM-greedy DEs that don’t let me know the state of affairs, but hide the truth behind bloated GUIs}
I always find the ‘note of caution’ amusing, because #! is the only distro that’s never gone ‘crunch-bang’ on me: #! IS my stable distro.
This is ‘probably’ the last (other’s) Debian-based distro I’ll use, unless I ‘roll-my-own’ with Debian-Live – Arch/Slack is beckoning me.
RAM usage is rarely above 111MiB, (Celeron ‘Coppermine’) CPU usage is rarely above 33%.
Great work, Corenominal!
I’m inspired.

I use crunchbang in vmware, and it works just fine! it’s my first xfce desktop.

Sadly having to use a Widows PC at work, so tried the Wi32DiskImage tool, which unfortunately failed to work, so trying LiLo. Would love to have a functioning #! on my little netbook, have been making do with XUbuntu set up to look like #! complete with conky!

Where has the ‘sudo add-apt-repository’ command gone?
It seems essential, given the limitations on available software sources.
February 3rd, 2011 at 5:47 pm
As Mr.Voorxotho says this is my stable distro. Any crunching and banging goin’ on is down to me firtlin’ with things and cocking it up.

Overall a very nice Linux, run very smoothly on my old Compaq Evo N600c, however two main problems:
1. No sound
2. missing ndiswrapper kernel module. can not install my old wireless card driver.
Both of those are worked fine on #!9.04
Please make sure add back those essential features for next release! Thanks!
February 5th, 2011 at 1:20 am
AFAIKS, many of the complaints here are missing the point.
#! is an ongoing experiment: you don’t HAVE to install to your hard-drive.
You can remove & add whatever applications you like: that’s the nature of FLOSS.
If you think of it as a sort of ‘Arch’ system made easy, that you can add to and subtract from, and share your experiences with others, then you’re on the right track.
It’s a custom-build that (almost) demands being customised, and all the tools are available, if you’re willing to tinker and accept the odd glitch, and take responsibility for your ‘own’ system.
Remember, it is based on ‘Testing’.
Enjoy!

Cool distro. I can build my own system almost from the basics. I use CB at home in my laptop, at work on desktop (in virtual machine), and planning to set up a CB file server on a Hp micro server at work for a small businesss.
Thank You guys! I owe you a keg of beer for the great job!
Herdsman…
