Hi all:

I'm new to crunchbang, but not to Linux. I guess you could call me a "casual" Linux user. I'm not a hard-core nuts-and-bolts computer expert, but I know enough to know I don't like Windoze. I started roughly 10 years ago, dual-booting Red Hat (pre-Fedora) with Win98SE. I've jumped back and forth between Windoze and Linux, giving up when Linux frustrated me, but finally ditching Windoze after they stopped putting out 98SE updates. I then switched full-time to Ubuntu, but found it a little too clunky for me. I loaded a stripped-down version of Debian (Lenny I think) on a netbook a year or two ago, and that was fine, but now I've got a new full-sized laptop. I'm looking to have multiple desktops available, one for gaming, one for work, etc. So far I'm liking Crunchbang.

*waves hello*

Hi all you #!

I'm a Windows homeboy, but I often like playing with Linux. I have tried the whole spectrum. Ubuntu, Kbuntu, Xbuntu, Puppy, Slackware, DSL, Mint, Peppermint, Xandra, Suse, FreeBSD, Knoppix and several others I can't think atm.

So, I heard about you guys from different sources about Linux OS's that work well with netbooks. I have an ASUS Eee 1005HA. I just use it lightly when away from home. Windows 7 was just sluggish on it, XP is too ancient, Vista is in the middle. After reading about you, HOLY ****! You have a clean desktop and *** kicking apps out of the box! It's like DSL kicked in the butt.

I'm only trying this in VirtualBox right now, but I'll soon implement this into my netbook.

So, yeah *hug*

(please stop me, if I'm bouncing off the wall. I'm just happy :D)

Please! I am really going nuts! Help me!
I installed vbox from the site. Installed xp sp1.
Then I added my user to vboxusers and added the famous line for usbfs in /etc/fstab.
I rebooted and started xp: now, in fact, the usb devs are visible (and not greyed out like before). But when I click them, nothing happens! Crap!
So tried another thing: created the usbfs group and added me; I modified the usbfs line in fstab changing the gid (from 118 of vboxusers to 1001 of usbfs): reboot and start xp and same result! Double crap!

I also tried adding a line to /etc/init.d/mountkernfs.sh: domount usbfs usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb -onoexec,nosuid,nodev,devgid=118,devmode=664.
I start xp: nothing again! Triple crap! Please help me!

I added the usb filters in virtualbox and I can see the usb drive in the vbox menu, but if I clicke them, windows does nothing!

Help please!

Hello:

I just installed Crunchbang and yes, I already have questions :D

I'm no stranger to Linux, but I'm trying to do some new stuff with the multiple desktops, and I'm not sure if/how I can do it.

First off, I've used Fluxbox and other managers in the past, and I always had up to four desktops to choose from. With the default setup, I only have two. I assume I can add more?

Also, just how customizable is each desktop? My dream situation is to have four different desktops with four different backgrounds, different icon setups, etc. Is this even possible? If so, what's the best icon manager to do something like that, or would I need different managers for each desktop, if that's even possible?

BTW, I did look for this in the wiki and elsewhere. Either it's not there, or I'm too stupid to spot it (either is equally possible).

Hey All :-)

I just performed a new install of Statler Alpha 2. During the text install, I got a message regarding some missing firmware, which I didn't understand at the time. As I didn't have any clue what this was about, I just proceeded without installing anything.

Anyway, it turns out that this must have been relating to drivers for my WNIC (Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter) as I have no internet.

I DuckDuckGo'd around a bit and discovered that my WNIC uses the ZyDAS chipset, and found a project on SourceForge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/zd1211/) that I should be able to use. I was able to confirm this by looking at dmesg output, which stated:

[ 114.931551] usb 1-4: firmware: requesting zd1211/zd1211b_ub
[ 114.937526] usb 1-4: Could not load firmware file zd1211/zd1211b_ub. Error number -2
[ 114.937539] zd1211rw 1-4:1.0: couldn't load firmware. Error number -2
[ 115.004679] usb 1-4: firmware: requesting zd1211/zd1211b_ub
[ 115.010630] usb 1-4: Could not load firmware file zd1211/zd1211b_ub. Error number -2
[ 115.010643] zd1211rw 1-4:1.0: couldn't load firmware. Error number -2

In the included README, I'm told to copy the zd1211_* files to /lib/firmware/zd1211, so I tried that. At first, I got a message back informing me that the zd1211 directory didn't exist, so I cd'd to /lib/firmware and did

sudo mkdir zd1211
sudo cp zd1211_* /lib/firmware/zd1211

At this point, the files seemed to be in the correct place, so I rebooted, but still no joy.

I'm thinking this may be some sort of permissions problem, as, when I use a root Thunar so browse the /lib/firmware/zd1211 directory, I'm not able to right-click and select 'properties' (the option is greyed out).

I'd love it if someone could point me in the right direction!

I was planning exhaustive tests and a long erudite review, but a desktop with (now solved) network issues had Statler Openbox put on it to try and fix them, so here's a short superficial review instead. The network problem was elsewhere, but I think Crunchbang will be a perfect match for this little Sont Vaio with 1GB of RAM but a rather slow 1 point something GHz Centrino CPU (longer battery life is the payoff there).

So a few things that struck me:

*) Overall there seem to be many small improvements over Alpha 1. If the next version is as better again it should be really impressive!

*) Visually very nice.

(specifically)

1) There doesn't seem to be an Openbox equivalent to the GTK Shiki-Statler theme: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/77429/#p77429

2) I couldn't find a memtest in the Grub menu. It's not a major issue because you can use the live session, but...

3) It's nice to have a custom Grub background image, but the menu looked a bit cluttered to me. Can font sizes be reduced a bit for less essential bits? Can that white box be thinned down or removed?

4) A few apps I expected to find were not included by default: htop, rsync... Especially, can I put in a plea for as many network tools as possible to be included? If your network's down you're in a Catch 22 situation :(

5) Nice to see the Openbox menu coming back with all those neat config entries.

6) Happy to note that man pages can now be scrolled with the up and down arrow keys. (That's the sort of small improvement I meant.)

Anyway it's looking good! Philip, your work is most appreciated. :)

Hi guys!
These days is virtualmachine time! ;) I installed vmware workstation and it told me to install the kernel modules. So I ran sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r) and instaled them.
I rebooted, but when compiling, vmware gives me an error, referring to this logfile:

"lug 29 23:34:06.770: app| Log for VMware Workstation pid=10018 version=6.5.1 build=build-126130 option=Release
lug 29 23:34:06.770: app| Host codepage=UTF-8 encoding=UTF-8
lug 29 23:34:06.770: app| Logging to /tmp/vmware-root/setup-10018.log
lug 29 23:34:07.626: app| Extracting the sources of the vmmon module.
lug 29 23:34:07.636: app| Building module with command: /usr/bin/make -C /tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmmon-only auto-build SUPPORT_SMP=1 HEADER_DIR=/lib/modules/2.6.32-5-686/build/include CC=/usr/bin/gcc GREP=/usr/bin/make IS_GCC_3=no VMCCVER=4.4.4".

What's the problem guys? I can't see one in my extreme compilation ignorance! Maybe I have to install the linux-source package?

The vmware error was "Unable to build kernel module".

Thanks in advance!
