Topic: Removing splash option from grub?

I am doing a fresh install of xfce crunchbang, and I run into an error.
When the bootup splash happens, i get a stream of errors related to drm radeon. And the boot up does not proceed. This might go away once I get the new drivers properly installed, but until then I need to disable the splash.

I found pressing 'e' at grub and editing the command, taking away 'splash' worked.
How can i make this change permanent?

On an unrelated note, is there a way, once I've logged in via gdm, to stop x and get just the shell. It's required for installation of the ati drivers (via the instructions given by debian).

Thanks.

Re: Removing splash option from grub?

I remember placing an S (yes, capital) at the end of the boot line in grub to boot into the CLI. You could try that

Let's do it and don't screw it.

Change to a virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1, F2, etc), login, and kill GDM:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
