Topic: [solved]...but I know Xfce is there (and it was)

Hey, *

First time running the new and improved version of stadler. Reading the comments Cornominal, I understand why there's just an Openbox version, but I still want a Xfce WM. So, a quick [sudo apt-get install xfce4] and whopping 19mb later, the trusty little netbook grinds out the usual lines of code that tells me stuff is installing.

I reboot, and... nothing. Once past the grub menu, I log-in as me, and hit the password. In the past, this is where a little dialog shows asking to confirm language, keyboard, and session. No such luck this time ...but I know Xfce is there.

Any idea how to access it?

Thanks, in advance;

Re: [solved]...but I know Xfce is there (and it was)

wasn't it just a press on F1 to get alternate login-options in Slim? meh, they'll probably tell you that in the thread that dkeg linked as well, if i am correct. if not, you have wasted only a single push of a button big_smile

Re: [solved]...but I know Xfce is there (and it was)

to get the F1 press working, you've got to edit your slim.conf (I think it's in /etc/slim.conf)

Thanks, guys... wouldn't have gotten this far without your help.

I edited the slim.conf file, added xfce-session alongside openbox-session, and got the [F1] option working. Then I get this funky dialog box saying, [Xsession: unable to launch "xfce-session" X session --- "xfce session" not found; falling back to default session.](okay)

Maybe remove and re-install xfce...

xfce-session

to

xfce4-session

and you should be good to go....

The worst part about being able to access e-mail and formus while at work is that you have to wait X-amount of hours until you can impliment the fix! tongue

And really, all this frustration over a "4" after xfce?

Re: [solved]...but I know Xfce is there (and it was)

A quick summary (for the next guy)...

1. Add Xfce

in terminal,
sudo apt-get install xfce4
Go grab coffee and wait for the whopping 18.4mb download and install.

2. Edit slim

in terminal (still)
sudo geany /etc/slim.conf
on line 54, add "xfce4-session" to look like this:
sessions            openbox-session, xfce4-session
save before exiting.

3. Log Out, Reboot, Shutdown. Just get out of there...

4. Hit [F1] to shift between Openbox and Xfce sessions.
Enter username and password.
Life goes on...
