The actual color/gradient of the wallpaper depends on the color/gradient in your desktop settings.
The preview has of course no background color, so therefore it appears dark gray due to the lightning settings in the image.

You could have a crack at it. I followed this howto and used it to modify someone else's package (one of cathbard's) to create my own.
