Topic: High Memory Usage [UNRESOLVED]

I can't figure out exactly when, but idle RAM usage has shot up (by 200-250 Mb) after a recent system update. Running "top" shows the culprit to be Xorg. Any idea how to fix this?

Re: High Memory Usage [UNRESOLVED]

try opening synaptic and forcing the original udev package. It has been responsible for mem leak on select systems and will effect something else like pulse or x.

failure is only a negative way to describe a learning experience.
i am constantly learning. smile

Re: High Memory Usage [UNRESOLVED]

Not sure I understand this. How do I force an original package from synaptic?

Re: High Memory Usage [UNRESOLVED]

Open Synaptic and search for udev. Select it, go to the Package menu, and look for an item that says Force Version, click it and downgrade to an older version.

Re: High Memory Usage [UNRESOLVED]

Thanks, Anonymous. That helped - somewhat. After rebooting, RAMs hovering at 190 Mbs with nothing running in the double digits except guake and dropbox. That's still on the high side. Methinks I got spoiled by #!

Re: High Memory Usage [UNRESOLVED]

....and it's back to 320Mbs with nothing running. I'm marking this as unresolved.

This reads like the problem you are experiencing is not related to a Crunchbang installation or you've upgraded to later release of Ubuntu like 9.10 or 9.04. Is it any of those scenarios?

Re: High Memory Usage [UNRESOLVED]

It's the default installation: #! 9.04. Regular updates only.

Re: High Memory Usage [UNRESOLVED]

How much ram do you have? 320mb used is normal if you have, say, 2gb, but not so good if you only have 384mb. Ubuntu uses more ram the more you have. Use it or lose it. smile

Re: High Memory Usage [UNRESOLVED]

2gb, but the problem is that the increase is recent. Earlier it used to idle at 150 max. Now, conky shows 400, with 46mb swap usage, with nothing running. (I started up the web browser after checking, so it's not firefox/chrome).

One thing I noticed on conky is that the number shoots up from 90 to 150 just after network-manager connects, and then keeps climbing up. Is it possible nm has a memory leak?
