Topic: [solved] need a (japanese) translation!

hey folks.

I need your help. I just need the short sentence "I read." translated to japanese. it is for a job I do. I need it in japanese writing (kenji or the other one..doesnt matter), not in western latin letters.

Edit: if you speak any other language, you might contribute a translation too! so far I already have: russian, korean, finnish, swedish, ethiopean, persian, arabic, turkish, dutch, hindi, punjabi, german, polish, french, portugese, spanish, italian, vietnamese.

it's gonna go into a Tshirt typo design for the local youth-library.

I asked aunt google already, but I do not really trust the automatic translation- just try copying a sentence into it and translate it to and fro for a while ad see what's left of it in the end. was hoping for native speakers.

I don't trust Babelfish much either.  My Engrish-Japlish dictionary agrees with Google on the Kanji for kaku (to write), which is the first character in the translation above, but I'm not sure about the rest.

Well, he did ask in the Off Topic / General Chat area of the forum.

Maybe he asked here because he knows us.  We have a reputation for being friendly, helpful, and accommodating here.

EDIT:  From what I've read about Japanese, watashi (the personal pronoun I) is rarely used; if you see "to write" without any noun or pronoun, I is assumed.  I'll brush up on my Japanese grammar though.

Hi NewCityVegas. There was another thread just today or yesterday about japanese input in crunchbang, so I thought I'll try and ask here. There's always a good chance that there's someone from japan or of japanese descent on a forum.

And pvsage is right: I know this forum as the friendliest place on the net, plus I pass by regulary, so I ask here in general/oftopic. was kind of urgent this morning.

oh well, problem is solved by the way. a friend answered my email just in time, so I can happily share the answer with you (in latin letters, though)

watashi wa yomu - i read
watashi wa yomimasu - i read in polite form (wicked, uh?)
watashi wa yomeru - I can read

we can see, the japanese language is wicked cool, they have polite forms for everything.  – pvsage, how come you know japanese grammar?

^ I was a bit of an anime otaku a while ago, before anime became incredibly mainstream and us Amerikajin could only see it on SciFi on Saturday mornings, or occasionally late nights on Cartoon Network.  I bought a Living Language Japanese course set, but it only had romanized Japanese, so I also got the Random House dictionary, which has kanji and hiragana.

I still only know enough Japanese to get my face slapped, and would barely pass as a gaijin in Japan.

oh well, this too.. big_smile – but I thought more about the most fun thing in learning languages: the art of insulting your opposite and his mother and his father and the whole family until the seventh past and future generation and to explain how the family dog is related to every single one of them.

In Romania they know how to put all this in one sentence, very vivid and rich in detail. really good language for proper swearing. I just know about enough romanian to get seriously beaten up in a local bar.

and I like this turkish insult that goes like "I fart into your father's beard" lol

It depended on whether Saneks' "I read" was present or past tense. (same spelling in English, different pronunciations) 読んだ (pronounced "yonda") is past. 読む (pr. "yomu") is present. As pvsage pointed out, you can drop the "watashi wa" in most situations. But it's all done now anyway...

^ The only time I remember hearing the phrase "watashi wa" in anime was in the 2001 version of Metropolis, when Tima was pondering her identity.  The English subtitle for the phrase was "Who am I?"
