Topic: LOL....I am embarassed but.....(SORT OF SOLVED)

....I can't believe I am posting this but, I can't get #! to run off of my freshly burned Live CD. I loaded it via the bit torrent option from the home website and all looked just fine. I only say that because the download from crunchbang website ran the 620.5 MB and the file created also ran 620.5 MB. I have run no other diognostics to check validity of the download. I then burned the image to a CDROM. All seemed to go fine there too.

So I have what appears to be an error free download and error free burn to disk. I am currently using Linux Mint Helena as my OS and for the life of me can not figure out how to try out #! booting from the Live CD. I am very sorry for such a noob question, but if there are any hand holders out there who would be willing to take pity on me and help a Linux noob/junkie -in training with getting this distro to run off of the Live CD, I would really, really appreciate it.....Thanks in advance....

I just put the disc in and ran from the CD/DVD drive and it automatically came up. I am not sure why yours isnt doing the same. Maybe do a fresh burn and/or check your booting from the disc.

So you've burned #! onto a CD, did you boot from the CD? You need to go into your bios, and set CD to be the first boot option if it isn't already. Then the computer will boot off your CD instead off hard drive. I don't know if I misunderstood your post, but if you could confirm you've done this / haven't done this, it'd be helpful.

Thanks guys,
I did indeed just restart and was looking for a prompt to select boot from the CD. I have never booted from the CD in Mint so I am not sure what I am needing to do to get the bios menu to show prior to Mint loading. I guess this is the real issue. please feel free to point me in any direction , ask any question, that will help me clarify what is going on...I truly am a bare noob and am more or less  feeling my way through all this.

When #! starts up if you are thinking of installing it then just right click and from there it should be simple =]

Re: LOL....I am embarassed but.....(SORT OF SOLVED)

When you attempt to boot from the #! CD, what do you see on the screen?

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Re: LOL....I am embarassed but.....(SORT OF SOLVED)

So far, all I have done is load the disc into the CD/DVD tray, and restart....once the machine restarts, I get the standard lag before it boots MINT. I think when I loaded mint to this machine from the live CD (was running Wind-bag XP at the time) I needed to hit one of the "F-keys" to bring up a selection menu to select the CD driver as the boot source. Since I am yet to boot from the CD drive in Mint, I am unsure (read "clueless") as to how to bring this option up. otherwise the boot process runs normally and it boots Mint right from my hard drive.

Re: LOL....I am embarassed but.....(SORT OF SOLVED)

It's usually F1, the escape key, or F2 and varies from brand to brand.

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Re: LOL....I am embarassed but.....(SORT OF SOLVED)

OK....let me try this and I will report back in a couple of minutes.....fingers crossed.

Re: LOL....I am embarassed but.....(SORT OF SOLVED)

OK...it is the ESC key that brings up the bios menu....tried selection the CD driver but the machine still booted mint from the hard drive it seems. I think I will try to burn a fresh CD and try again. I will keep you posted in a couple of minutes.

Re: LOL....I am embarassed but.....(SORT OF SOLVED)

OK. I am ready to burn this disk. The Disc burning set up is asking me if I want to create a disc from the contents of the image or with the image file inside? Any help on this? Goodness, I am so sorry for the brain damage guys. but this is the first excursion into some of the tools that Mint comes with and I just do not want to F*@k it up.

To ensure that your downloaded file is not corrupt I suggest you check the md5 sum of your file to make sure it corresponds with that published on the website.

Then just burn the file to your CD as an ISO image.

Re: LOL....I am embarassed but.....(SORT OF SOLVED)

SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!

I am now writing to you all via this wonderfully light and responsive distro!!!!! I am indeed officially hooked on Linux and REFUSE to use any microbloat product so long as I am able....WHEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

OK, one more noob question. before I dive into the deep end and attempt partitioning my hard drive (40 gig / 4200RPM) If I want to import my MINT based OS info, or make a copy of it and move it  into the crunch bang OS, how best to do this? I currently just need to migrate a couple of documents(basically my "home folder") and my book marks. I have VERY little data stored on the hard drive and it would all fit, I assume, on a 2 or 4 gig thumb drive. I am also without the benefit of any other external drive or means to back up my data just now. (not to worry, it is def on the very short list of gear to get, I am just starting out noodling around here)As an aside, just how much brain damage is required for partitioning my hard drive? Where best to find instructions that are specific to Linux and/or specific distros? I will commit to doing my due dilligence and USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION(S)...LOL...but I am just curious as to how smart it would be for me to attempt this and run a duel boot system (Mint and Crunch Bang)

Thank you ALL so very, very much....I am pretty proud of myself and I LOVE playing with Linux.

Re: LOL....I am embarassed but.....(SORT OF SOLVED)

To be honest, I would just back up your data (no problem if it can fit on a 2-4 GB USB drive), re-install Mint and #! and get the partitions the way you want, then load the data from the USB drive where you want it.  I have always just done it this way, it seems to be the least error prone method.
