Why did you choose XFCE over LXDE?

LXDE is based on openbox which is one of the sessions that will be included with openbox. I think people will be pleasantly surprised when logging into either xfce or openbox as the desktop will essentially look the the same (except for the menus). smile

Aha. Well, that works for me. I've been very impressed with the way that LXDE is progressing (and I expect that many people will switch to Lubuntu over Xubuntu once the final version is out and they see how well it works).

Re: Great news!

i'm rather looking forward to the 33 kernel (or later), so i hope that makes the release.

and fox, i agree ... i'm set in my ways too.   grub1, +1... no.. er, i dont mean grub2.
is there some advantages / disadvantages i'm unaware of though?  almost certainly.  ^_^

Re: Great news!

gdm will probably be in the alpha when released so that will slow it down a bit.

Why not use  a terminal like log in (inittab level3) like Archbang. Terminal is black as the default crunch login anyway.
Without graphical login I boot in maybe 12 seconds in archbang, from grub to working desktop.

grub legacy +1

What's the big deal about a graphical login anyway? I'd gladly trade it for even a few seconds shorter boot.

Re: Great news!

Or you could also use SLiM as login manager - lightweight, and fast - i use it myself smile

So do I myself.
+1 for Slim.

Ha ezt el tudod olvasni, biztosan nem vagy rövidlátó.

Re: Great news!

Oooh, I've been waiting months for an updated Crunchbang. big_smile Currently on sidux, but it just doesn't compare to #!. smile

Just a quick question, Debian Squeeze was mentioned, but does that mean that we'll be sticking with those repos, or will the repos be testing (yes, I know Squeeze is testing, but it'll also turn stable later)?

really very nice application, I don't like the new gdm in the lastest ubuntu (and it is very slow)

Re: Great news!

As long as the boot time is around a minute i would be fine with it,,,
Of course id be happier with a 12 second boot time,,But in the long run i dont see boot time as an important thing for me.

If a graphical log in added a few seconds it wouldnt break my heart as long as its easy to do.

I had no clue people were wanting xfce instead of openbox..
Im more of an openbox fan.
Even though LXDE is based off of openbox im not big on lxde either.

I guess ive been #! brainwashed the last couple releases.

I do know this much,,What ever ends up being released im sure ill learn it and love it.

Re: Great news!

Glad to read the great new... nice touch to include both xfce and openbox... i personally became (thanks to #! 9.04) in an openbox fan but i know there's a lot of xfce dudes right there... so everyone is happy... Cheers.

Re: Great news!

The various distros I've tried before that use a pure Xfce desktop, with as few, if any Gnome/KDE 'bloat' or dependencies ... have been very, very fast.
Nothing, at all, like Xubuntu or LinuxMint Xfce CE ... but a lot faster. and easier to configure.

Same goes for Openbox . . . it could be 'ultra' quick and with the Debian 'testing' repros . . . Awesome!!

I'm excited. tongue

Don't get me wrong, I love Mint/Xfce-8 . . . but, I know it could be better.
And I really like a Rolling Release cycle.

Re: Great news!

Is the XFCE release going to be without desktop icons by default ( I like it that way, since it have the good ol' right click menu from xfce4.4)?

Re: Great news!

Great news indeed.

I'll be sticking with the OB version - but a fast, light, stable XFCE distro to recommend to new users... excellent.

Also, I can't wait for Crunchbang "Gonzo" yikes

Such awesome news. Can't wait for the new Crunch.

"I think people will be pleasantly surprised when logging into either xfce or openbox as the desktop will essentially look the the same (except for the menus)."

All I remember about the xfce menus is that you can't edit them, which was the end of xfce for me.

+1 for grub legacy from me too.  Grub is my bete noir; i'd only just learnt how to use the damn stupid thing properly when they go and completely rewrite it!  Gits.

So with the two branching WM versions will we be seeing Statler and Waldorf? I would so use Waldorf Linux.
As long as there is a floating Waldorf in GDM.

Funnily enough, I was discussing this issue with omns this morning. I think that we can probably get away with using the odd image here and there on the websites, but using them in the actual release could be pushing it too far with regards to copyright. hmm

How about one of the better artists on the forum creating a Waldorf Tux? smile

I would offer myself up, but it's common knowledge I am about as artistic as a brick tongue

Re: Great news!

ob & xfce, that's the good deal (naturally, openbox for me) but (there is one) debian is a geek machine (i'm not a geek : i'm no longer young, i feel geostationary)
before #!, i was using a testing with the bee script : that's toomuch work ! so, i'm a little afraid !!
