Topic: Upgrade Path

Somebody had to start the thread so here goes.

1. Will there be an upgrade path from 9.04 ?
2. Will be preferable to do a clean upgrade ?
3. Will there be a script for a possible debian net install?

Oh and thanks fothe work corenominal

Re: Upgrade Path

1. No
2. Yes
3. No

Re: Upgrade Path

1. I doubt it since they're based on different distros (9.04 is Ubuntu and Statler will be Debian).

2. Clean installs are always better.

3. Nope:

No, it will use the Debian text installer, this negates the need for an alternative installation script.

Re: Upgrade Path

Well that's clear then

Re: Upgrade Path

A "netinstall" option might have been nice, but I suppose with a custom #! kernel that wouldn't be possible.

Re: Upgrade Path

So since installation will be done through the text installer, does this mean there won't be a Live CD?

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

The final ISO will be a sort of hybrid affair. From the syslinux prompt, you will be presented with the option to run a LiveCD session, or start the text installer. smile

Will there be a Wiki page for the text installer and how to get wireless cards or broadband cards working.
Those are my main source of internet.

Or will the live CD act like an Ubuntu were it just picks up those cards automatic.

Ive never been able to get Lenny live CD to recognize either card.
Ill admit i didnt try to hard,,,LOL

Ill probably start work on an installation guide when some kind of finalised installer comes out, although i would assume that it would be a fairly standard debian install, and that debian install guides would be useable in the interim, i assume.

Thanks you Benj1.
Every time ive tried to install a distro with the debian text installer ive pretty much given up on it too quick because it didnt read my cards,,and the documentation on the debian site for net installs using wireless cards just didnt seem all that simple,so i moved on to something that would read them.

This time around ill try alittle harder.

This should not be a big issue as it will be possible to run the installer without a working network connection. Once the installation is complete, you should then find that most* wireless cards are recognised.

* I have tried to include firmware for most of the popular wireless chipsets that need it. If you find that your card does not work, please let me know. smile

Re: Upgrade Path

Since we're on the issue of hardware compatibility right now, making sure sound works on everything is probably a good idea too.  With Canonical Hardy (but not Dellbuntu Hardy) and some other distros of that vintage, I had to add something to alsa.conf to get sound on my netbook.  I haven't had this issue with later versions of Ubuntu, so for me anyway it is currently a non-issue, but it might be something to keep an ear out for.
