Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

Woo-hoo!! Posting from Statler Alpha 1, effortlessly installed on an old Dell Dimension B110! Text install is not like a CLI install, it's still plenty easy for ordinary folks (even dixiedancers!).

So far the only weird stuff is that when I mouse over the Network Manger icon it says, "No Internet Connection" even though there is one. Synaptic Reload and Mark All Upgrades applied as quickly and easily as they always have. Xfce-4 version looks and acts very much like Openbox. I can't locate the Panel Settings yet, but it's only been a few minutes since I booted into this awesomeness. But I was so excited I just had to post a "YAAAAAY!" message - from my new installation!

I've never tested an Alpha before, much less a geeky one like this! It should be fun - when it stops being scary (in a good way, like a rollercoaster ride).

Philip! You are the awesomest Linux developer in the history of ever!

The Xfce version uses tint2 just like the Openbox version, so edit the ~/.config/tint2/tint2rc file.

For what it's worth, when I did a Squeeze install a while ago (with wired network connection), the installer did detect my card, asked if I wanted to enable non-free, downloaded the binary blob and rolled the joint for me.  I haven't tried installing Statler alpha yet, but I'm guessing it might do the same thing if I jacked into the local Matrix.

I'd be really interested to know if that works for you again. Despite being text based the new Debian installer really is quite powerful. Actually I shouldn't say 'despite being text based' because I prefer it that way smile

I'm curious about it too, but it will have to wait.  The roommate's in this weekend, and it's kinda embarrassing to have to run a CAT5 cable just to install an OS on a netbook.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

Wow. Pulled a copy after seeing on DW. Had recently wondered when new version might come out. Previously used Fluxbox on Grml (also Debian based). Slapped OB version on SSD I had free. Can't beat this desktop for speed and simplicity! Thanks for a great distro!

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

Awesome!!!

I also really like the themes and icons used, and am now using them on my Arch install. Now trying the Xfce version, tried the Openbox version yesterday.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

Edit: about Grub 2, usually the first thing I do after installing a distro is revert back to Grub legacy... IMO it's faster.

Do we have a choice during the install, to place Grub on the partition with Linux, rather than in the MBR?  I prefer to use XOSL to select which partition to boot, rather than Grub.  Previous versions of Crunchbang simply wrote over the MBR, without giving me the opportunity to select where I would like to place the loader.

Two problems with the alpha "Statler", downloaded XFCE 32 bit version:

1.  Screen resolution remains at 800 x 600, no option to choose 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024.

2.  Saw VLC media player (thanks!), did not observe SeaMonkey, very disappointing.

here is the info on my computer:
default Linux:  Slackware 13.0 at 1024 x 768, kernel 2.6.29.6, KDE 3.4
motherboard:  ASRock 775 Dual 880 Pro
cpu:  3.0 GHz P4-"D".
memory:  A-Data Dual Channel 1 Gb, 800 MHz
video controller:  NVidea GE Force MX 440, AGP 8x

I think you do get the option if you do an expert install.

Did you install drivers for your video card? Also check your the xorg.conf and see which driver its using.

Don't worry, the applications list isnt any where near final, this is more light because its just an alpha.

or Arora or Chromium

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

Arora wouldn't really fit, since it is Qt and most #! apps are GTK. Midori is more lightweight than Chromium.

Good point! I totally took this for granted. I have now added a warning to the top of the page. Thank you for raising this. smile

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

#! Statler Alpha, Openbox i686

Live session boots fast and works fine from USB drive.
(Both Unetbootin and 'dd' copying tested)

Installation on my Acer Extensa 5220 Notebook:
First I tried to install from a USB stick. Installaion failed, because of 'missing cd-rom-drivers'.
I've tried it as recommended in the HOWTO, but it didn't work for me.
Burnt the image to a CD-ROM. After that, the installation process went until it came to
wireless. I couldn't give the installer a WPA2-key. So I connected my machine to ethernet
cable. Installation went fine then! smile
(I've had the same experience with previous 'native' Debian installations.)

Running Statler Alpha from HDD:
-Main OS #! 9.04.01 was added to Grub.
-Machine boots from Grub to GDM in 25 Seconds.
-Very nice wallpaper, icons and font. I love it!
-Resolution 1280x800 works as expected.
-Wireless config was easy and works.
-Hibernation works, but sometimes the wireless fails after resume.
-German keyboard settings: the Umlauts are ok, but I can't type a pipe symbol and
other special characters (Euro-Sign, etc.).   sad
-Fn+Up/Down: Volume control works.
-Fn+Left/Right: Brightness control does not.

So, there is still some work to do. But this Alpha version looks very good and
promising so far.

Again I want to thank Philip for his great work! smile

I can't believe there are 6½ pages of posts before I realise there is an alpha available. Why didn't any one call me to let me know?

Just about to burn a cd now.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

This was a big and good surprise for me... I was trying to move to archbang the last few days but the process is not so easy for me. I have a look on Statler (great name...he's my personal favorite character) openbox version and everything seems excellent as always. Really great work. (A few small) but(s):

* Is Debian a rolling release distribution or something like that? is there a way that from that install we can keep getting updates without a new install needing?

* I like the new themes and Icons but I really love the 9.04.01 default themes (especially the dark). Is there a way we can "steal" them and install them on Statler?

* One last thing that bothers me with archbang and Statler is that if I start a sudo command the tab auto-complete doesn't work...can this be "fixed"?

I'm installing it right away and I'll be back for some real feedback...
