Topic: Statler install speed

The first time I ever tried Debian, I remember that installation was rather slow. Will this happen with Statler?

I rather liked how installing #! 9.04 took less than 15min.

Re: Statler install speed

9.04 is a nice quick install.

I recently installed Lenny just to get familiar with the text installer and it was quite abit slower
just from the configuring end of it,,But once it actually got to the install part it wasnt much longer than an Ubuntu install.

Re: Statler install speed

I think the reason a Lenny install is so slow is it has to download just about everything.  Since Corenominal says the Statler ISO will be "a hybrid affair" I assume most of the packages for the base distro will install from the LiveCD?

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Re: Statler install speed

A slideshow during installation would be nice with pics of us Crunchbang fans.
Or a very small script which leads you through partitioning and setting up a root account, leaving out all the rest of the work to be done on the working system. As I saw it lately on Scientific Linux' live-cd.

Re: Statler install speed

Debian uses a text-based installer I don't think you can show pics.

Re: Statler install speed

I have used the Debian installer more times than i can count and as with everything there is advantages and disadvantages. I think the biggest advantage is the little details. With the debian installer you get to setup more stuff the way you want it. like being able to log in as root or use sudo for example.

This depends on the speed of your machine, but in theory it should not take any longer than it did with the Ubiquity installer. The Debian installer will basically copy the live image to the users drive, exactly the same as it used to with the Ubiquity installer. It does not need to connect and drag down any packages as it is all self-contained.

Thanks for the info Philip.

What about ASCII art ?! smile

Re: Statler install speed

Good point though it wouldn't help with screenshots and the Debian installer would probably be running in a low resolution too.

Re: Statler install speed

Regarding, graphics, I think the debian-installer team are working on some move with the graphic installer, and the option should be back sooner or later.
Regarding the installer speed, it's just that the recommended debian installer image is the netinstall, that only has the base system, and downloads all the rest. It used to seem much slower then ubuntu's, until I did an install with cd1 once and it's munch faster.

Re: Statler install speed

I remember doing some graphical Lenny installations last year. Hmm, couldn't be the Absinth, since those days are long gone.
But text-based is always better. smile

Re: Statler install speed

The installer was plenty "graphical" enough for me, and I'm about as geekness-challenged as it gets. The instructions were clear, the arrow keys are no big deal. Even the partitioner was concise enough even for an artsy-craftsy, non-technically-minded little dixiedancer to figure out and do a manual configuration. It's hard to feel sorry for adults (not to mention any names, Cai Eng) who cannot read and follow the simplest of directions, when this autistic kid can figure it out and install an Alpha without whining. My installation took all of 20 minutes (using a satellite internet connection). It hung up on setting the clock a few times, but I just walked away and let it argue with the time server while I opened a can of Mountain Dew. By the time I returned they had settled their differences and the installation continued as effortlessly as before.

Ubuntu's Ubiquity installer was pretty and graphical, which probably helps newbies and rude whiners (not to mention any names, Cai Eng), but I think (you should try that sometime, Cai Eng) most Crunchbangers will find the Debian installer just as quick and easy as I have.

No, you're right, no alcohol hallucinations needed,  it's just that the graphical installer was broken so now they're switching backends or something, and it should be back before Squeeze...
