Topic: Monthly art packs

Because a lot of people seem to be into making and using #! themed wallpapers, GDM themes, etc me and corenominal talked about having a monthly art pack.  The general idea is that each month user-created art will be packaged and put into the repos, with a link in the package description to a page showcasing the art in that package.

Let me know if you're interested and if you have any ideas or suggestions speak up. smile

I agree with you !!

We all know how much time and effort people have put in their work.

Re: Monthly art packs

Good idea, have running threads for the monthly packs, which then can be locked once they're in the repos.

Re: Monthly art packs

+1 for a collaborative crunch-artwork smile

Re: Monthly art packs

Sounds like the beginnings of a plan. When should we start , Feb '09? I offered to do the packaging work, but if someone else would like to volunteer for the job, I am all ears. smile Also, thinking about logistics, would it make sense to create a separate repository for art packs? I am just thinking that they tend not to be specific to any one release, also regular *buntu folks would be able to add the repository without having to worry about pulling down any strange packages. Thoughts?

Re: Monthly art packs

corenominal, I like the idea of a separate repository. It makes things a bit more granular so future options are left open.

+1, make sure the packages are arch independent as well. If your putting the wallpaper in the standard location (/usr/share/wallpaper/) then I think any Debian distro will be able to use them.

Re: Monthly art packs

Sounds sweet.
Perhaps later when we get a few more packages there will be a package with all the previous packages. So that there will only be one package to get updated to the latest of the incredible artwork smile

meta-package would be best for this, say:

crunchbang-artwork-2009-jan then a metapackage of crunchbang-artwork to pull down the monthly packages. That way, people could install crunchbang-artwork at first then when a update is available it pulls down the new monthly package smile

Re: Monthly art packs

Yeah! Exactly what I meant!
Did not know that there was such a thing as a meta-package! smile
Looking forward to see all the artwork submitted smile

Good idea, I would look forward to these although I can't make anything for it.

Re: Monthly art packs

Love the idea.  Couple of wonderings:

Where/how/to whom should we submit art?
What types of art should be fit into these art packs?  Wallpapers, GDM themes, Openbox themes?

I imagine there'd be a thread set up each month where you could post the art, and at the end of every month it'd be put into a package and either the thread removed or locked.

All of 'em.  Anything that would relate, nothing like 2 surfer foxes kissing.

Re: Monthly art packs

Would all art submitted to those designated threads be placed in the package? That's fine with me, but I think it's prudent for someone to still place their artwork in their own thread for people to comment on. It's an iterative process, and things get improved. Only if the creator of the work is happy with it should it be placed into the thread for end of month packaging. I only say this because you could get lots of variations on a theme (this I know). I think this should be emphasized just so people like me don't submit 20 wallpapers to the thread and then 80% of them are very very much alike.

Also, inevitably (or wishfully never) I'm assuming it's corenominal who is the authority on whether something gets pulled or not. There is no "art team" for #! is there?

One other question I would have (for now anyway) is what kind of guidelines for artwork resolution, format etc would be required. I think some degree of organization is required if only to make people "think" you know what you're doing. wink I'm very good at fooling people when it comes to this. tongue

Agreed, the iterative process is important and personally I would like to see the individual threads continue as they are. There are some excellent threads and it would be a real shame to lose them. Maybe the monthly art pack threads should only contain links to work held in other threads? If we could get some details down beforehand, we could start each monthly thread with an instructional post, which might help everyone to understand the process.

Personally, I would really like for this to be a community effort and I would not like to be the authority on what gets pulled or not, I dislike the authorities! big_smile No, there is no "art team", but it might be nice if one were created.

lol As am I. Agreed, see end section in the first part of my reply.
