Topic: Skype (or Google call) on a Statler netbook?

I see that #! Skype works fine and old CrunchEEE worked with issues, but is anyone using VOIP on a Statler netbook?  Overheating or CPU load problems?

I'm thinking voice-only, not video conference.

Re: Skype (or Google call) on a Statler netbook?

I have no problems with Skype, works out of the box .

I use Acer Aspire One.

Re: Skype (or Google call) on a Statler netbook?

Hi guys,

i use a logitech quickcam deluxe for notebooks and haven't been able to get it work with skype since i moved to statler. was working fine in the previous crunchbang (w/ ubuntu). i can, however get the cam to work with the cheese cap app , just not skype. any ideas?

Re: Skype (or Google call) on a Statler netbook?

l also had problems getting skype webcam to work on a newer version of debian, even though my cam worked ok in cheese but found the solution on the skype forums. older webcams will need to load the v4l1 compatabilty layer first before starting skype as stated in the notes: so try this

* Skype does not work well with newer version of GSPCA Webcams driver (Linux
    Kernel >=2.6.27), possible workaround:
    - Ubuntu 32 bit: install "libv4l-0" package and launch Skype with:
      LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype

this worked for me. Also if you need to adjust the colours or the image is to dark a good program to change the webcam settings for skype is guvcview. Hope this helps.

I use Skype all the time to communicate with classmates, do homework, socialize, etc.  No problems here.  smile

Re: Skype (or Google call) on a Statler netbook?

I never use VOIP or any of the various video conferencing utilities, but from everything I've seen in Statler and #! 9.04 on a Dell Mini 9 (another netbook with no fan), I would expect Skype to work better in Statler than in the earlier *buntu-based CrunchBang and CrunchEee.  Expect processor usage to get high if you ask video processing software to handle resolutions higher than 360p.

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Hi I advise you to translate this post via google translate:

http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/webcam

Their documentation is quite wide and helped me with my syntek webcam.

I've never been that comfortable with Skype being on #!.  I know the distro isn't 100% libre, but Skype is one of the most proprietary bits of software out there.  In ye perfect world, we'd be using Ekiga!

Good webcam chat support on linux is about the only thing i find linux lagging behind windows on the desktop. l guess one of the reasons for this, is there had never really been any incentive to fix this as most linux developers dont use webcams and chat mostly in IRC.
MSN and Yahoo webcam support  is either broken now or not available. Skype currently is the best option for most people, and has been the only option to allow me to chat to my girlfriend.
Yes Ekiga is an option but as you say its not a perfect world and most windows users use one of the main 3 i.e Yahoo, Msn or Skype.
So for me Skype making a linux client available with webcam support was the best news for a long time even though it does lag behind the windows version and which is now 4 and linux users have to make do with a 2.1 beta.
