Topic: extra drivers during install? - was (Issue backing up to Statler)

Just thought you might not be aware of this.
Currently running CB 904 on HP NC6000 and EVERYTHING WORKS out of the box. (so I am actually scared to move off it now!) but things are moving on - can't get the latest newsbeuter and calcurse to name a few.
So I thougt I would back it all up - rsync home to usb - clonezilla root to usb and try alpha2.
However, it stops during drivers asking for TIGON/tg3_ts05.bin for the broadcom I think.
I think this is a fairly common card and should be available ( I can't find it in my 904 setup but I have found it in a firmware deb.
Is this normal for debian and have I just been 'spoiled' using ubuntu's in the past?

Re: extra drivers during install? - was (Issue backing up to Statler)

I'm not sure I understand what is happening here. Is the error occurring when taking your data off 9.04 or when moving it onto Statler?

Re: extra drivers during install? - was (Issue backing up to Statler)

just to follow up on this...
when installing statler on nc6000  laptop, after  network hardware, it asks for the tigon/tg3_ts05.bin firmware for the broadcom eth0.
It says 'if you have it on floppy or usb, insert now and continue'
I tried from usb and when I press continue, the screen goes all blue except for cursor in bot left corner.
I tried 'expert' mode which gives the option to load extra modules etc. but then it returns to blue screen above forever (or half hour in my case!)
If I CTRL-C it goues back to expert menu and I can start network bit again with same result.
I was expecting a option to nav to where the tigon driver is, but it just hangs instead.

it says its a non free driver which I can live with but seems not to load it
It doesn't seem to notice the wlan 0 that CB 904 uses quite happliy either?

Re: extra drivers during install? - was (Issue backing up to Statler)

did you try to run statler in live? does it boot/give you error messages? and does your hardware work in live environment?

Re: extra drivers during install? - was (Issue backing up to Statler)

Luc,
thanks for reply, yes, it seems to work as a live disk (writing this now from it!)
here is the ifconfig and lsmod. I see a tg3 module loaded which I guess is the tigon driver.
And I just found in /lib/firmware that the tigon drivers are present.
So do I need to ignore during install and copy them in afterwards, hoping it will find them during a reboot?

regards Nigel

Re: extra drivers during install? - was (Issue backing up to Statler)

I'm sorry I have no idea what to do now. But I know the following:
- there is a version of apt-get to use cd-mediums as source so you could install the driver from there (HOW???)
- there are many other wise people here on the forum: to make them recognize your thread I suggest changing the title to "plz help me install driver from cd" or something similar which describes your actual problem as precise and short as possible.
cheers

Luc,
ok, ta for help, how do I rename this thread? Can't see any options etc. for this anywhere.

Re: extra drivers during install? - was (Issue backing up to Statler)

info for all...
Just tried to install statler 2 on HP DV2500 and it also stopped saying non-free ethernet (different type)
so I said yes to install it and left it. Because it's a lot faster than the nc6000 it eventually carried on and
must have installed it cos its working

Moral: it just doesn't give a clue as to what it is doing!

will try again on nc6000 and leave for a couple of hours this time. Funny cos it's usually lightning quick
under 904 but both laptops just give a blue screen and then no obvious activity!

Re: extra drivers during install? - was (Issue backing up to Statler)

Hello All

Yup, when installing onto this thinkpad T42 without an internet connection of any kind. it invites me to supply the firmware for the wireless card. I just clicked 'no' and carried on.

Wifi worked perfectly when install completed, as it did on the live disc.

Drivers must be on the CD somewhere, so perhaps an installer bug or path problem? (guessing)

Otherwise, thunderingly solid.

Re: extra drivers during install? - was (Issue backing up to Statler)

I had a similar problem during install on my vaio tz11 ...

I tried saying "no" when asked for the wireless-driver but the install did not complete properly - I do not
remember exactly how.

But I was lucky, to have another working system with an internet-connection, so I googled for the driver -  it was included in a
package called "firmware-iwlwifi_0.23_all.deb" for my intel iwl 3945 wireless card

I put it on an USB-Stick plugged it in and the driver was found automaticly
and this time the Statler Install worked easily!

hope that helps if someone has a similar problem.
