Topic: failed to install with usb [SOLVED]

I recently installed #! on my eee netbook, after having used it on desktop for a few months.
I decided to get Statler live (to make it permanent afterwards) so I followed this short tutorial to put it on USB:
http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/statler … stallation
I can't get the Statler installed though (on the usb, yes, but not on the netbook!)
When I plug in the usb and press ESC before boot I choose "boot from USB".
Then there's a flash of a tenth of a second of some screen that I don't know what it is (pause doesn't halt it), and immediately after that the regular grub comes along, asking which I want to boot, the (regular) Crunchbang or the windows boot that's still there too (though I somehow blew away windows).

After a few tries I gave up and decided to leave it and go ahead with regular Crunchbang.
But... apparently the usb-install of Statler did something to my usb so that it's not mountable anymore.

dmesg | tail

gives this:

[10673.376373] sd 9:0:0:0: [sdd] Attached SCSI removable disk
[10673.376487] sd 9:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg5 type 0

[11310.501359] FAT: invalid media value (0x57)
[11310.501367] VFS: Can't find a valid FAT filesystem on dev sdd1.

Should I try to find a way to "repair" the usb, or retry to use it for statler install?
If the latter, how?

Hi catch22

If you want to install 'regular' Crunchbang, onto the usb you could try the following.

1. Download the .iso you want.
2. Plug in the usb, it doesn't need to mount but check with dmesg for device name (looks like sdd from your post).
3. from a terminal- sudo dd if=/path_to_.iso of=/dev/sdd

Good luck.

Re: failed to install with usb [SOLVED]

I recently installed #! Statler on my Acer Aspire One (I'm typing this from there)

I simply used the same Statler A2 download that I already had.
Downloaded Unetbootin on my PC ... made the Unetbootin program executable.
and saved the #! iso.files to a 4 Gb flash-drive using  Unetbootin.
(beforehand, I had to format the flash-drive to FAT-32)

I then, re-booted the Netbook and pressed F2 and changed the boot order and made the USB drive first in the Netbooks Boot Order.

Inserted the USB flash-drive into the Netbook and rebooted again.
Selected to open the Netbook as "Live" and played with #!Statler for a little while.
Re-booted and selected to "Text Install" this time.

Followed to cues/directions from the Debian installer.

Simple, smooth uneventful installation.

#!Statler A2 works great on my AAO Netbook ... "everything works outta the box"

Re: failed to install with usb [SOLVED]

I'm not stupid, but when it comes to computers, sometimes I do feel dumb and silly tongue
Among the many mistakes I made, one was for instance that I never noticed, till now, that in Unetbootin the USB window (the menu thingy) is where one should choose TARGET to install to (always assumed it was "place to get iso from").
Took me ages to see that and change it to hard disk.

I'll spare you the rest of my stupidity (for now wink)
