Topic: [solved]remind not in menu after install

I installed remind and the gui front end but they don't show up in the menu. I had tried kalarm but couldn't get it to load at startup.

I tried gksu remind from terminal and got this:

gksu remind

(gksu:1695): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_str_has_prefix: assertion `str != NULL' failed

Have no idea what that means.

How do I get remind or some other alarm app like kalarm to show me alarms when I boot my system?

What happens if you run remind without gksu?

I get the command line remind. I need a gui reminder. I only use the CL when forced to. Most of the time if I try to use the command line, by the time I have figured out the commands to type I have forgotten what it was that I was wanting to do.:) Thanks for you help. I will mark this as solved and figure out what to do. May have to go back to a kde distro that will let me use kalarm. It does exactly what I want.

Re: [solved]remind not in menu after install

Try tkremind in terminal.  It will not be able  to start a new file, click yes or ok.

It doesn't show in my Xfce menu.  I suppose this is one of those things you'll need to remember -- don't mean to joke, it's just I know what it's like to get half-way there and forget where you're going.  hmm

Now why didn't I thing of that. Thanks, winotree. Will post back whether or not it works.

Re: [solved]remind not in menu after install

If I use terminal and type remind it opens with all the parameters for the CL operation. Then I type tkremind and the gui opens up. tkremind does nothing by itself. I have to open remind first. If I close terminal then they both close. Not sure that it can do what I want. I want something to open when I boot and give me the reminder that is pertinent to that day and time.

Here in the backwoods we get garbage pickup once a week. I need a reminder to popup when I boot the computer to tell me that I need to put out the garbage for the next day's pickup.

Here in the big city we get garbage pickup once a week.  Seriously.  And speaking of seriously, I don't use that program, in fact never heard of it before today but took an off-chance to download it to see if I could figure out how to get it started for you.  If you type man remind and man tkremnd in terminal you ought to get their manual pages and perhaps enough information to assist you.  Sorry I can't be any more helpful.

On second thought you're using Xfce and it has the calendar program orage as default.  I know it'll accept information about appointments and you can set time, date and occurrences.  It can be made to popup or that's its default behavior, I don't recall which.  It's in the menu, isn't it?

Re: [solved]remind not in menu after install

Yes, orage is in the menu but I didn't spend a lot of time with it. I knew how to do kalarm so I downloaded it. I have been using kde for a while and thought that it might work. I will spend a little more time with orage and see if it will fit the bill. Not really fond of man pages but I will look at those also.

I am not that informed either about getting programs to load on startup.

For Openbox, you just add it to the autostart.sh file like:

program &

Re: [solved]remind not in menu after install

So from what you are saying, I would have to put remind & on one line and then on another line tkremind &. Should I put a time delay in the tkremind?

Here is another question...is there a way to have terminal minimized when remind opens and just let me see the gui?

Re: [solved]remind not in menu after install

I think it may be better if you just use kalarm.
