Statler after suspend

I have had Statler A2 since last May in Compaq 6000nc laptop, 1.5 Gh, Radeon video card, Ram 1,25 Gb, as live edition on a 4 gb memory stsick. When resuming the laptop after suspend, the screen comes back as usual. The colours of the display have, however , a remarkable reddish or violet hue . Otherwise the laptop seems to work ok after suspend session. The same strange color  with Xfce and Openbox. Upgrading video drivers, Radeon and ATI, plus a few other upgrades, did not solve problem. 9.04  did not
present  any suspend worries. And googling the forum threads  I found nothing. Any suggestions?
EDIT: Disabling kernel modesetting was a solution. http://wiki.debian.org/KernelModesetting
