Sorry to post this a day early. Post here or in the November thread until December 1. Whatever rocks your boat tongue

Please continue to use thumbnails (please try to avoid the large thumbnail imgur.com code) linking to the larger image to help those of us with slow connections. An example of the code needed is below. Most image hosting sites will automatically generate this for you as well. I've been using postimage.org lately which does a nice job.

Any wild guess would be appreciated.

Some time in 2013

I made a small edit to the bottom of this blog post. I hope it clarifies things a bit more.

In any case the c’est bon, c’est la vie rule applies.

What does the "bpo" stand for and what does it mean?
Thanks.

It means the kernel is from the backports repo.

@rhowaldt. I wouldn't spend to much energy on this one. caeing appears every 6 months or so, imparts and argues  his subjective wisdom then leaves. It will be the same pattern this time. I'd suggest not engaging with it.

It would be useful if problems and issues could be raised in separate support threads. Some of the valuable problem solving in this thread will be lost in the pages of feedback on the new release.

Put simply I’m now reliant on some apps that aren’t available in squeeze (like FocusWriter that I’m composing this post with). That may seem fairly minor but it’s enough to make me look elsewhere.

Yes, that does seem fairly minor o_0

A little off-topic but I can't tell you how much I've fallen in love with this little application (FocusWriter). Maybe it's the little typewriter sounds as you type or that it takes over the screen and removes distractions like your web apps open in the panel. It's probably a combination of those and the nice theme/configuration options.

In any case it's brilliant. I'd highly recommend it to someone doing a lot of writing. Many nanowrimo participants swear by it smile

Sorry, couldn't resist  wink

Thanks, mate. I did, but only to ask for a torrent for the previous Statler. For me, XFCE 32 bit Statler was perfection. I'd just like to return to it smile

I posted a link in your other thread smile

The torrent you are after is http://crunchbanglinux.org/downloads/st … so.torrent

I just tested it and it is still going strong smile

That's not quite true. I haven't used CrunchBang as my main distro since before the release of Statler. It usually just runs in a virtualbox. This was the first actual install I've done in quite a while. Perhaps the perception that I do use it is a testament to the amount of support I've had (and still maintain) for the distro. There's a difference between feedback/criticism and abandonment. In my defence, corenominal did ask me for feedback when it was released.

I wouldn't recommend Fedora to someone not comfortable with Linux either big_smile

lolz, I can't argue with that lol

@VastOne. I don't think there's much wrong with a bit of objective criticism. If no one raises an issue and blindly accepts shortcomings then  open source has a bleak future. As you've surmised, the commentary isn't aimed at users like yourself who can quickly correct any issues that may arise. My feedback is aimed at users who install, upgrade and break something like their new video drivers or  as in my case a few months ago - apt. Backports is great but it should be used with caution and with being made aware of the consequences. Much like using the Liquorix kernels. User beware.

In that article I say

Yes, of course it’s still a wonderful distro and it always has my support

I stand by that smile

@omns: How is the fedora xfce? Is it xfce-like or overloaded like the mint one?

No it's pretty much just Xfce but with the usual Fedora system tools thrown in. I haven't looked at it closely but it's fast and works well.

I don't think you can call the Ubuntu or Mint versions - Xfce. They are more like a Xfce/Gnome hybrid imo smile

@ivanovnegro, it looks like my old friend Xfce to me wink

I made a thread about the backports issue.  Let's move the discussion there and get this thread back on topic smile

In reference to the discussion in this thread from post 236 onwards and in other well known threads

http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/166136/#p166136

Change the pin value of the Squeeze repos so that backports is not used by default .

That is all smile

One reason why using backports by default is not such a good idea. It would have been better if the backports repo was appropriately pinned and only used for select packages. I've removed my new Statler install due to a couple of issues that may or may not have been caused by backports.

I installed the 64bit 20111125 this morning and so far so good except xcompmgr decides to turn itself off on occasion. it seems to happen when I run Synaptic. anyone run into this?

that's a bug that's been around for a long time with xcompmgr. I don't think there's much you can do about it except turn off a few of the effects. There's a really old discussion between corenominal and myself about it somewhere. I'll see what I can find.

edit: not sure if this will help as I'm a bit out of touch with Openbox / xcompmgr. I think the cairo compositor does a better job smile  http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … -settings/

Shameless lol

It would appear so roll

@VastOne - in that shot it looks like the Xfce4.6 to 4.8 menu bug where the entries for Web browser etc disappear. Is this a fresh Statler (new images) installer with Xfce4 added or an older system?

No, it doesn't grab the Xfce packages as an option anymore. Development is focused on Openbox only.
