Ooh, what a great thread!

I use Inkscape (which I love) GIMP (which I appreciate) and have used Scribus (which looks good) and Blender (which I have great plans for!). I also get occasional use of Hugin (which is pretty slick). Once or twice I've had cause to use ImageMagick.

I've just started delving into FontForge as well. It's ugly as all sin, but I am super impressed with it so far!

Mostly though, thanks for this thread! I've already installed MyPaint, with Alchemy next on the list. I've been looking for OS painting apps!

I run #! on my EEE 1000, very happily. I upgraded to 2GB of RAM, and performance has never been an issue (except with Firefox which is sluggish AS HELL).

In fact this netbook has been my only personal computer for over a year now. I'm a fairly demanding user too, frequently using GIMP, Inkscape, creating panoramas, etc. It's not something I would recommend, but it hasn't been as painful as you might imagine.

I was running the special 'Cruncheee' distro, but currently I'm running the full CrunchBang (not even the lite version). It performs well, but battery life seems to have really suffered.

Thanks wyverex, I think you may be right. Some video files play without any problems, but some smaller files exhibit this stuttering. Do you know how I can check my drivers and swap them out?

My compositing is off.

I'm running #! on a netbook, but my previous installation used to play back videos with no issues, on both mplayer and VLC.

Since upgrading to the current #! though, video has become problematic. The files play okay, but every 5-10 seconds, the playback stops briefly. Enough to be extremely irritating. The problem affects VLC and mplayer.

My last installation used the special eee kernel, but this time around I didn't even install the lite version, so maybe it's a performance issue? I've not noticed any problems with other applications, and I do some fairly intense stuff in GIMP.

Any suggestions for me? smile

Why abbreviations at all?
I think you could easily fit "Switch User" and "Shut Down" if you want to, but then again, not everyone uses an English OS, so no text would probably be best...

I don't follow... I'm not using any abbreviations at all anymore. Now the icons are purely graphical...

For those who may be interested in the finished product, you can see and download the set here:  http://drop.io/foomandoonian

There are three variants: Bold, lite and rounded in PNG 128px and 64px. I'll do at least one more release later with separate SVG files, but for now the source SVG is in there.

Enjoy.

Well, I feel like an idiot.

tongue &

Yeah, I just needed to add an ampersand. I gave adeskbar a ten second delay just to be safe. I was convinced I had corrupted something by mucking around.

Thanks for the help guys.

Incidentally, I realised as I was trying to figure this out last night how far I have come. When I started using #!, I had no idea what OpenBox or GDM (or GTK) or X or any of this stuff was. Clearly I'm still no expert, but as Churchill might have said: this is not the end of me being a noob. It is not even the beginning of the end. But perhaps it is the end of the beginning.

hmm Bang on

Halp!

Preamble
Last night I decided I wanted to try Moblin on my Eee-PC. I didn't want to install it over #! though, so I wanted to run it from an SD card. Anyway, the way I tried it first failed to work, and my computer complained about not having anything to run. Whatever. I restarted.

The problem
I got to the login window no problem, entered my details and #! loaded up - a little. My wallpaper was there and my cursor was able to move around but nothing else. No OB Menu, no Alt+F2 or Alf+F3 menu. After a little while I noticed that ADeskbar had loaded too, so I was able to launch X-Chat and get some help from the forums.

I added Terminator into ADeskbar, launched that and then ran openbox. Worked fine. I also launched tint2 and basically seem to have everything running correctly at this point. The autorun.sh file seems in good order. Processes like Dropbox and Nitrogen are being started.

What I think is wrong
After much experimentation, it seems that the problem is with GDM not calling openbox-session, even when I explicitly ask it to at login. Please bear in mind that I am running right up against the limitations of my Linux knowledge here. I would appreciate any help, but would especially value someone to give me the answer in plain English and explain a little about what's going on. smile

I kept the xchat log from last night with lost more detail about what I tried if that helps.

Thanks! big_smile

Thanks both. smile I never really left CrunchBang, it has remained my OS of choice this whole time.

BUMP! big_smile

So, I've been out of the #! scene for a while, and I see there is a new font in town. What is the current official typeface?

Wow, ADcomp! I haven't looked at adesbar in a while, and I have to say it is looking really good now! Very slick. big_smile

Thanks all. The BIOS seemed the easiest thing to try first, and it worked a treat. I now have a working webcam. (It actually seems to be a rather good quality one!)

Thanks again. big_smile

Hi all, long time no see. smile

So, I'm using CrunchEee on my 1000, and the webcam has never worked. This has never been an issue for me, but now I'd like to get it working. I've seen this post, but I don't know if that helps me any.

Any clues for me? I'm a level 6 noob, so answers pitched appropriately will be appreciated. big_smile

Good point. And he does look like some kind of criminal in that photo!

wink

Heh. I just assumed you would want to farm out that kind of thing. Fair enough, you win. wink

Give me a little while and I'll send you the details.

I'm the current owner of these accounts, but I'm playing less of a role in the #! universe these days. Is there anyone who would like to take control of these accounts? Ideally someone who is involved in the community here and an enthusiastic micro-blogger. Applicants must be willing to run BOTH accounts!

I'm happy to arrange some kind of vote if there's much competition, and will also run the final choice past Corenominal for his blessing.

The District Thin version is the only logo I have seem so far that I like even half as much as the current logo. And I like the all-caps.

Well the "copyright owners" (And by that we mean the RIAA/MPAA etc, not the people who should actually own the copyrights) are the same in the UK as the USA (or at the very least the UK versions are "owned" by the US versions) so there shouldn't be any issue like that.

The reason why the BBC has UK only for iPlayer is because you're supposed to need a TV license to use it, technically.

Did you follow the situation between Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and Universal? In this case, the artist didn't have inclusive rights to his own creation. I understand in some corporations in having non-compete agreements and Universal wouldn't want to make a contract with Reznor that they should have distribution rights, unless it was their interest. When do you cross the line from protecting your interests and being greedy?

I will be cheering with you guys when the artists stop running back to the big labels for more abuse and have full control over their own music. But the road from here to there is long (and land-mined).

On the surface, Hulu and iPlayer should be the start of a brave new world. I would love to watch Lost or Galactica as I'm sure you would like to watch Dr Who or QI as soon as they come out. Localising the revenue streams should be simple. Except, of course, it's not. A few weeks ago I sat in on an overview of music copyright. The BBC (where I work) has lots of blanket licences to allow us to use a huge range of music in our content, but it is still a legal nightmare! A film isn't owned by one person, it is part owned by maybe dozens of separate entities, each demanding a fair (or more than fair) slice of the pie.

I'm with you in spirit - I really am - but where we are now is the result of capitalist self-interest.

The licensed content problem needs to be fixed, but at least you can understand why the situation is as it is. Until there is a global model for these copyright owners to get paid for their content, they are going to continue to try and restrict the availability to the markets they operate in.

I don't like the current situation, but I really don't see how it equals fascism (or even elitism). It's pure capitalism. Or am I missing something?

Heh, 'walking the plank', what a great way to put it! big_smile

I have to admit I wasn't really sure what I was looking at. Ottomar, perhaps you could give us a short explanation? smile

Does 'free' really have to trump style here? Sure, Helvetica is a commercial typeface, but it's also a hell of a lot more classy than any of the alternatives that have been presented here - especially Deja Bland up there. hmm

#! is by no means a completely free distro. It's prepared to compromise some freedoms for conveniences - codecs and the like. I don't think a logo with a restrictively licensed font is any worse than, say, having Flash. Especially given that there is nothing stopping us providing a suitable SVG of the logo on the Wiki, or with the distro itself.

What are your thoughts? smile

I like those too, but they are not mine. Mine are more in keeping with the Crunchbang minimalist style. smile

I finished the demo today (well, I skipped 'Tower of Goo' for now) and I have to say that the last half of levels in Chapter One are much more enjoyable and challenging. I'm seriously tempted to buy the full game. I'm also pleased how well it played on the Eee 1000. smile
