Re: help with menu and opening files (24 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
If in thunar everthing is fine. It's only when I try to open files from the right-click menu on desktop.
I checked some files, like images, and the 'properties' are correct. 'opens with viewnior' and when I double click it it does in fact open with viewnior. But, when I right click desktop and navigate to that picture with the places menu, just below 'recent files' it will try to open with gedit, and I get error.

Topic: help with menu and opening files (24 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
I am using the latest #! edition.
silly question, but why is it that #! tries to open everything in gedit when using the 'Places' menu?
ex: I right click desktop and go to 'Places.' I see all my folders in 'Home' and I go to Music and find a song I want to hear. When I click it gedit opens with an error. Same if I want to view a picture, I go to the picture in the menu and click it and gedit opens with error.
It's like #! doesn't recognize the file type and open the file with the appropriate software.
Is there a quick fix and thank you for your help.
Dave.

when my internet is slow, i shut down everthing, including modem and router, and then start up after one minute. brighthouse told me it takes one minute for their modems to reset internally. that usually does the trick and i have fast internet. tip: do this right before playing cod4! hope this helps you.

Woah!! this looks very cool!
can i get a link to the first and last wallpapers? i download the theme. i like the way the top conky looks with the shadow. that is a setting in conky that does that, right?
good work. you should maybe try a florescent green theme too. I like those 'glowy' colors!!

also, the ubutu is installed on this computer. the internet works (wired and wireless) out of the box. the ubuntu is karmic by the way. ubuntu 9.04 didn't work. but i want crunchbang.
hey, i just thought of this, if i add karmic repos to the #! will that work?

i have a new laptop (eeepc 1101ha) and i am trying to install #! on it. but, i have no internet connection (etho or wlano) probably because of the driver. so, i have the driver but can't install it because i have no compiler. i went into synaptic and no compiler (build-essential). why is this?
to try to bypass this, i went on my ubuntu machine and into synaptic. i downloaded the build-essential deb and tried to install this on #! but is missing dependencies. i keep gathering the dependencies but i keep getting more dependency errors to no end. how do i fix this?
i just need to connect to the internet. and i can't because i can't compile a simple driver program to get the internet going. ![]()
the driver file is here --> http://partner.atheros.com/Drivers.aspx
and i am following this tutorial --> http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? ght=gma500
don't worry about the 'graphics' part as that doesn't concern me now. my problem starts at 'make.'
thanks for your help.

no offense but if you know enough to make an informed decision about the potential dangers of root access, you will know enough to know how to log in as the root user.

you probably did something wrong in those long directions.
are you using 8.0 like it says or 9.04, which is the latest?
if it were me, i would do it again with the latest version of #!
my usb isn't persistent but i used usb-creator
those directions are good because i have used them just go slow.

hey dove,
the box sounds cool. make sure you post pics. what kind of wood? i was thinking about doing one made out of teak wood. another idea i had was to take a book, a fat book a little bigger than the netbook and cut out the center of the pages to set the netbook in. i just couldn't figure out how to deal with all those flimsy pages. maybe glue them together or something. the wood box sounds better.
take care and welcome.

hi tartan,
yeah, i deleted that partition because i don't like windows and figured i would not need it.
I turned my laptop over to best buy and they said two weeks to fix.
I have heard alot of bad things about best buy but i have always had a good relationship with them.
i bought my first computer there. it had a problem so they gave me a new computer because they didn't have
the exact same computer in stock. it was an emachines desktop and i just recently gave it to a friend because
he was without. my first laptop (emachine m68098) was bought there at the same store and the monitor
went bad on it. they fixed it better than new.
hopefully they will do the same with my eeepc. i really like that computer.
thanks again for everyones help.

Re: have you seen this before? crazy! (8 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
Well everyone, thank you for your comments and suggestions.
Update: the monitor on my little black beauty is toast. the line is like the poster said above, about one inch down from the top and goes all the way across. i plugged in an external monitor and no line so i guess that means my monitor (on the laptop) is bad. the line covers everything - windows, movies, firefox, terminal and mouse pointer.
When i bought this laptop, at Best Buy, it had winblows on it. So, i am returning it tomorrow (hopefully they will give me a new one
). I didn't want to return it with Linux on it so i had to somehow put windows back on it (with a usb no less). Well, I did it!! It looks brand new!
If anyone ever has to put windows on a computer with a usb (microsoft says it can't be done) follow this tutorial.

ash-drive/
I will let you know what happens.
thanks.

a grey line horizontally across my screen.
all of a sudden it appears and i can't get rid of it. i wasn't even on my computer. i was on my apple playing cod4.
i shutdown, restart and still there. do you know how to get rid of it? what caused it?
thanks in advance.

weird, i just checked my screenshot and it's not in it. the line goes left to right a half inch above her eyes. and yes, i even changed wallpapers and it's not that.
it's not conky.
my mouse pointer goes UNDER the line.

This is the fruit of my efforts, greets to omns for helping the magic happen, conky needs work, theres plenty to do, and i dont like the msn butterfly either, but thats how the family finds "msn" - eww.
hey sevenup,
what dock (is it cairo) and which icons are you using? they look sweet (even the butterfly) and can i get the wallpaper. I like your conky! You will have to try the rings too!

Re: why is graphics so low in crunchbang? (6 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
thanks omns.
to further add to my first post, maybe this will clarify things more clearly...
when i run mint 7 (with compiz) it does run good, graphics wise, but when i run crunchbang with xcompgr enabled, i get slowness and some blinking (my conky goes crazy where as in mint it did not)
don't get me wrong, i can enjoy #! without the eye candy, but it would be nice to have it every once in awhile.
dave.
i am wondering, is it possible for me to install compiz and try it out without screwing my box up and having to do a re-install?
thanks for your answer.
