Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 (xfce statler, fresh install)

CPU:  P4-M 1.8 GHz
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 420 GO
RAM: 1.024 MB
HD: 60 gb

I'm using this laptop only for typing, surfing, watching movies and listening to music. So I can't tell if SD Card, tv-out, FIR, ... work. The wifi doesn't. But I bought a cheep USB-Wifi-stick.

Edit: I also own an eee701, as mentioned in this thread by the user "mudder"

I installed statler openbox-version a feew months. Everything works after installing the  debian eeepc-acpi-scripts. I can't remember exactly, but I think wifi was working ootb.

Huhu smile
This is my setup for the moment. I like simple desks and I love the default cb settings, so my desktop is nearly the same.

Hello,

I have a lot of problems with Grub2 and it is too complicated for me. I would like to install the old fashioned Grub.

But when I follow these instructions https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 #Uninstalling GRUB 2 I stick at the "sudo aptitude install grub" point. I can't install grub. Every time I try, he installs the "new" Grub2. I know the instruction is for ubuntu, maybe that's the point?

How can I install grub?

Ok, it wasn't a good idea that I didn't create a new thread.

Hi there,

I have the same problem. When I upgrade grub this is shown>

Generating grub.cfg ...
Found background image: desktop-grub.png
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-5-686
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-5-686
Found Microsoft Windows XP Professional on /dev/sda1
done

But I can~t select Windows when booting. I can see a gray status-bar moving from the left to the right but that is it. I would like to install grub1 not grub2, because grub2 seems too complicated for me.

Edit: Ok maybe it is something with my nvidiacard. When I change the default boot order to windows I'm able to boot into windows. But I'm not able to select any other os, because my sceen is flickering and I can't see anything. The gray status-bar is also gone sad

Nice work, thank you! I like the green one the most big_smile

I will take it for halloween on my eee 701.

Eidt: Only for others who plan to buy this hd: This didn't work. Don't buy this hd when your pc is not sata2 ready...Finally I bought a new HD.

I'm also using a eee701 and I love it!

(edit: just noticed, I'm  using #! for nearly 2 years on this cute machine and it worked all the time.)

I'm using a Huawei E160(not 100% sure about the number)

First it didn't work but all of a sudden it began to work and I don't know what I have done lol

@oldhand: I already jumpered it. That doesn't work. I already used 2 tools fom samsung also (they say on their webpage you have to use the tool to patch samung discs). But the tools didn't work.
Thanks for the link! This will be useful for me big_smile

@alexander: I know that most motherboards don't mind if a normal hd is sata2 when  they support sata1 only. But this hd is something "special", as a search in google says.

So nobody can answer my question about the adapter? I mean a kind of card which will transform sata2 devices to sata1...:(

Thanks smile

I don't know anybody with a sata2 board sad No other possibilities? What about a adapter?

As I understood a "normal" HD should be jumpered to switch to the sata1 mode when the board doesn't recognizes the hd.

Hi smile

I have big problem with my new  HD disk. I bought a Samsung  hd462jj. But it is not shown in my bios settings. (And  even in my Linux)

I have read, that my motherboard will eventually not support sata2. But I'm not sure what kind of motherboard I own. Where can I look it  up? When booting I can only see, that I have a AMI BIOS. (v 2.61)

I also read, that I can use a tool provided from samsung, but this didn't work. I also tried all kind of jumpersettings.

What can I do to prove, that the hd is not defect? How can I enable it for proper work? Is there a kind of adapter to switch to sata1? sad

I have a ide hd witch is working fine.

djmount doesn't work for me. You have to be root to access the files and it takes ages to load the content of a directory.  So I will use ftp...

Uuuhhh I wanted to edit the post above. Sorry for that neutral

I run Statler on a eee 701 with 1GB of RAM.

I love it smile Speed is ok. There is a packet in the repositories (I can't remember the name) for the FNButtons, they work fine for me. (Volume, WiFi,..)

I can't install anything on the nas. (as mentioned above it is a digitus nas) sad

I scanned my nas and port 22 is not open. There are 21 ftp, 80 http, 139 netbios, 515 printer, 2869 unknown, 3689 daap, 6881 unknown and 10243 also unknown.

Does anybody know how daap works with vlc? vlc udp://192.168.1.110:3689/Musik/01.mp3 also doesn't work sad

Edit: I will try djmount. Sounds promising...I will write an update of my efforts soon!

Thank you for your answer.

But I'm too stupid. When I try to connect I get "connection refused by peer" and I don't know how to tell sshfs to use a special port sad I think it the problem is the nas which is not able to handle with sshfs. But I'm not sure...

Edit: Do I have to enable port 22 on my router?

Edit2: Even if I enable the port it doesn't work. When I debug sshfs with -o I get "ssh: connect to host 192.168.1.110 port 22: Connection refused
"

Thank you for your comment! smile

I don't wan't to share with win (only linux) but my NAS only "speaks" fat32. So I must stick with samba. Next time I will buy a better NAS. sad

I wonder about the slow behavior of my shares, because ftp is really fast.

Hi there smile

I'm totaly new to samba and these kind of things. I own a small Digitus NAS which is able to act with samba. It works, but when I mount with this command

sudo mount -t cifs //192.xx/Music /mnt/Music -o username=SECRET,password=MYPASS

I get a connection but it is realy! solw. I wan't to watch a Video or listen to music. Are there some tweaking options I don't know?

/Edit: ftp is also enabled but  works perfectly fast.

When I install nvidia directly with ubuntu I need additional packages:

•nvidia-glx
•nvidia-glx-legacy
•nvidia-glx-new

and nvidia-glx-96 (because of my gforce 4, don't konw what's yours)

and depending on my used kernel:
•build-essential
•xserver-xorg-dev
•linux-headers-generic <myKernel>
•libc6-i386 , for amd64 for the 32Bit

/Edit, too bad, I'm too late again tongue

First of all: Only boot from LiveCD/USB. Otherwise you will write data to  /home each time you login. And the lost files will be overwritten. Don't mount it, or try to acess it before you made a complete dd from the partition.

Maybe this can help: http://www.xs4all.nl/~carlo17/howto/undelete_ext3.html

I never got any ext3 files back. Hope you are more luky then me.

Is it a USB DVD? Is it mounted when you plug in "normal" DVD (no video)?

According to the first error, have you tried this? http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-767958.html
