Hi again, hivar. Try :
$ alsamixer
Then :
Unmute the Master and PCM channels by scrolling to them with cursor left/right and pressing M. Increase the volume levels with the cursor-up key. (70-90 Should be a safe range.) Some machines, (like the Thinkpad T61), have a Speaker channel which must be unmuted and adjusted as well. Leave alsamixer by pressing ESC.
Then :
$ sudo alsactl store
That should store the settings. Hope that helps!
Could try running it "windowed", start it from the terminal with the -w option. See if it at least runs that way.
Looks like you found a solution : http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?pid=647211
Which is awesome if true. If/when you get the chance, please mark this thread as solved. It will help others searching this forum with the same/similar issues.
Hello, hivar, and welcome to #!
Have you tried alsamixer, instead of amixer? alsamixer is a pretty tried and true bare-bones way of getting volume levels set/unmuted.
In a terminal, just type :
alsamxer
You should see some bars. You can use your keyboard's arrow keys to move between bars that correspond to your PCM and Master Channel. You can use the M key on your keyboard to toggle a given channel being muted or not, and the up and down arrow keys on your keyboard to raise or lower the volume of the selected channel.
A nice wiki page on alsamixer : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alsamixer
Hope that helps somehow!
Nothing wrong with bland and normal. Crunchbang is a great distro, and an even better community. Lots of smart and talented folks hereabouts. The joys of Openbox, Conky and the like had eluded me till I found CB and started copying/pasting/tweaking all of those smart talented folks' config files they have so helpfully posted in so many forum threads.
Welcome to #!
murak : 3.5 from the ubuntu repos is not beta, but they kept the beta name as part of not replacing firefox 3.0 as the default/standard ubuntu 9.04 browser. I have also used the ubuntuzilla script as described by NewCityVegas above and also found it to work very nicely. If you go that route please do read the instructions on the script's homepage carefully, there's good stuff there about how to have firefox 3.5 be able to update itself sort of like it does on Windows, IF you want to go that route.
Not sure how to set which usplash theme you want from the command line, but for a nice graphical tool to do the job you can install and use startupmanager, a good tool for grub and splash screen configuration.
mehall : sorry about that, done now.
Thanks, anonymous. I thought my search-fu was strong, but evidently not strong enough to find the thread you pointed me to.
I did a sudo apt-get install --reinstall of crunchbang-gdm and rebooted and now all is well.
Thanks again for the link/pointer.
Ever since the last system update upgraded crunchbang gdm and some other crunchbang specific packages, the boot process hangs during gdm's startup. The little white spinning ball appears, and just stays there spinning, until I switch to a virtual console and login, then the virtual console at Ctrl-Alt-F7 with the X session seems to sort itself out and the gdm screen appears and all proceeds normally.
Anyone else having this issue?
So I'm one of those irritating early adopters who has installed a minimal CLI install of Ubuntu 9.04 and used the testing Crunchbang 9.04.01 script. Things seem nice, except for the little language button in the panel that always starts me in GB instead of US, even when I've set American English to be the default in the GDM screen. To get rid of that, anyone know if I can just uninstall SCIM or whatever that language-choosing app/applet is?
cain : a nice introduction to LVM ( Logical Volume Management ) was done recently at Distrowatch :

Can't speak for corenominal, but I'm guessing that since Jaunty isn't out of Beta yet, much less Release Candidate, much less Final, the 9.04.01.sh install script is just a skeleton/placeholder, corenominal probably hasn't yet decided on the final package list/what to all put into #! 9.04.01, but again, that's just me wildly speculating and making with the crazy-talk.
Hi all,
The 0.3.999 version of lxpanel was something I packaged to try and correct the issue in the previous version of lxpanel for 64-bit where icons didn't render in the taskbar. The 0.3.999 version did indeed fix that issue, but as others have noted here it comes with its own set of fun. I double-checked my packages, and I followed the guidelines for configuration options that the upstream authors of lxpanel recommended. Looking at the upstream bugtracker for lxpanel it seems as though there are numerous stability complaints, from various users running different distros.
corenominal, my hat is off to you and anyone else who develops/packages. I cannot imagine the unending cycle of frustration of try this, patch that, fixed that issue but introduced new issue so try this, patch that...ugh.
If this is just having two instances of vlc running at startup, I would think you could just add the relevant entries to ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh, something like :
(sleep 2 && vlc) &
(sleep 2 && vlc) &
This is NOT meant as a snarky reply, please don't take it that way. I went to sourceforge.net, did a search for "novel writing", and got 1296 matches. Now some of those only match one word or the other, but even so, there is a LOT to wade through. The programs you listed in your original post seem to be the standouts in terms of features and quality, but again, there seems to be a lot available.
There is a pretty handy walkthrough of gufw from Ubuntugeek :
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/gufw-simple-g
ewall.html
On the other hand I just "sudo ufw enable && sudo ufw default deny" after first boot of a fresh install.
Not sure how much or how little of a pain it would be for corenominal to have that configured out of the box, and what issues it may or may not raise for some users.
No worries, just keep tinkering away and asking questions, and have fun with it all!
System > Package Manager > asks for password, you enter that > Synaptic package manager opens
Settings > Repositories > Software Sources window will open
Tux in space. Nice!
Nice troubleshooting, calten!
Welcome to the forums, welcome to Crunchbang! Have fun!
Possible bad combination of which options you have checked under Panel Settings, Advanced, Properties :
"Make window managers treat the panel as dock"
"Reserve space, and not covered by maximized windows"
Just a thought. Hope that helps.
njama, don't worry about asking questions, the community here is knowledgeable and friendly. Google, of course, is your friend, but if that friend lets you down, ask nicely and someone here is sure to bring their own search-fu to help your cause.
Welcome to Crunchbang!
This blog post describes similar issues using Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex, detailing how the author thought it might be gstreamer bugs but turned it wasn't. He lists solutions that worked for him, and nothing in his directions looks alarming/dangerous, so it might be worth a look :

I hope that helps!
