Hello,

I like the update-notifier that comes by default with ubuntu so I enabled it and am quite happy with it. It does however also notify you of dist-upgrades (in this case to 9.10). That might just tempt a lot of people into dist-upgrading, which surely isn't a good idea as in my case (if not everyone using crunchbang) it breaks my installation.

So, wouldn't be a good idea to disable notification of new distribution releases by default?

Just installed crunchee 8.10.01. Most things seem to work appropriate, except for the following:

On boot, no splashscreen is displayed, just the console text, on shutdown however the crunchbang splash is displayed.

I can not tell anything about the eeepc's hardware functions yet, first need to install eeepc-control

I have been using elmurato's scripts on my 1000HA with great success... does eee-control provide full support for the ACPI function keys, including the external display? Sorry for the noobish question, I have not had any experience w/eee-control to date.

If eee-control will work just as well as elmurato's ACPI scripts, then I will do a clean wipe and install !# tonight.  More than likely the full version though, then just tailor it as needed.

On my eeepc 900 all acpi keys quite as they should. some are even customizable.

For those with an eeepc: Most users of the eeepc in combination with linux install cheese to use their webcam, most users however do not know that there is a much better alternative: ucview.

http://www.unicap-imaging.org/unicap_eeepc.htm

It achieves a way higher framerate than cheese and allows options such as changing the resolution of the webcam and brightness/contrast/color functions.

I have had a look at lxrandr, it does the job, but you can only use your second monitor in cloned mode, not in twinview mode, lxrandr is somewhat more stable and userfriendly.

It's you call captain wink

Does anyone have an idea of how to get the ACPI keys working as they should?  Or how to Iron out the external display issue?

On my eeepc 900 I have a lot of succes with this: http://greg.geekmind.org/eee-control/

also, I just totally screwed up my crunchbang installation by resizing the partition, I just got everything 100% superwicked working sad)

I did this:

   1. Download just the bin files here: http://www.getdropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86
   2. Extract and move .dropbox to ~/.dropbox
   3. Add this line ~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd & to your ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh file

I did the same, and used corenominal's nautilus substitution script. The method described in the first post of this thread does not work for me (crunchbang 8.10) as it  has no nautilus, and installing it is a no-go.

As far as I know the config for the kernel is located in /boot
I am using a custom kernel so it might be not located there in your case. But there is a reasonable chance it is as most distro's do this.

As far as I know this is not done with keys.

When you look in the .config/openbox/autostart.sh file you can see some commands used to set the keymapping, they are commented out by default but you can use them as examples.

If someone is looking for a graphical update notifier:

You could take a look at the following package: update-notifier
It is shipped by default in ubuntu/xubuntu and sits (invisible) in the system tray until updates trough apt-get are available, then the icon becomes visible and a balloon pop-ups. It runs as a normal user and thus does not compromise security.

Maybe something to ship per default in crunchbang?

Installing it goes as following:

$ sudo apt-get install update-notifier

now add the following in your autostart.sh file (somewhere around where the other applets like parcelite and network manager are started):

update-notifier &

Do not forget the ampersand (&) or the script will hang here forever and eternity. wink

Hello,
I have succesfully installed crunchbang on my eeepc 900 and have been using it for 2 weeks now. Everything seems to work quite perfect and I am pleased with the result. The crunchbang default style (minimalistic) totally fits me. (: Good, enough asslicking for now tongue

I have a suggestion. I see that the xfce resolution changing tool ("xfce-setting-show display") is being used, now I found a tool called "grandr". It can do almost the same the xfce tool can do, and more. like settings up a dual (or more) monitor environment) and screen rotation. Maybe you want to consider including it in crunchbang. Just a suggestion tongue

Keep up the good work.
