Problem is the little guy would freeze his exclamation point off with our current weather here. I'd have to dress him in long johns and a parka! ![]()

Can I get it in a Douglas Tartan!?!? =PPP
How's this? (I gotta find something more productive to do in my lunch break) ![]()

Oh crap, now that I look at the preview, if you forget the tartan, he's starting to look Hawaiian! I should quit while I'm ahead! ![]()

Topic: Not sure who conferred my membership status but... (3 replies, posted in Feedback & Suggestions)
I just noticed that my forum profile status over on the left brands me 'inkscape ninja'. A few comments:
1. To whoever did that, I'm truly flattered. Thank you.
2. I think of myself more of a neighbourhood Tai Chi instructor than any sort of ninja at anything. ![]()
3. I hope this doesn't raise the bar on expectations from any contributions I might make. I'm all about lowering the bar for myself whenever and wherever possible. ![]()
Again, thanks.

So neat! I love the quirkiness and the lighting.
What about varying the blur on each one depending on how far they are from the 'viewer'. Maybe the big one on the left stays sharp, but the ones behind and in front get blurred to varying degrees. May end up being a stupid idea, but it might end up looking neat. You never know.
I did something similar on this one:

wallpaper/ and I think it ended up with a neat look.

Re: CrunchBang Ninja - Remix (14 replies, posted in Artwork & Screenshots)
Very cool. It's a lot more Japanese looking. Nice. When I came up with the concept at first, I wondered how to do the open face style but chickened out and went the easier way out with the bandana. ![]()
The lettering is really kickass. It makes me think of some sort of cartoon jingle.
Lately I've been watching a lot of Disney's Phineas and Ferb with my daughter. Come to think of it, I probably enjoy it more than she does.
Anyway, Agent P (Perry the Platypus) has this killer theme song. Your lettering makes me think of that.

Here's a little reworking of the eyes to give him a little more of a lively (and maybe menacing) look. I think they look significantly better than the first go:

yeah i thought it was easy, but my slanted exclamtion mark looked like a staircase. just white paint on a black background, like the remix i did of your first sketch. thanks in advance.

Re: Crunchbang Ninja-fied! :) (33 replies, posted in Artwork & Screenshots)
I think that 'fan art' is a great way to foster community support. But as I hope everyone realizes, this was not done with the idea of creating an official anything. I just have fun playing around with symbols ideas and concepts. I have several other ideas involving the #! symbols.. only some of which involve ninjas.
Maybe my suggestion of refining the ninja gave the wrong indication. Also, my suggestion that people take and improve upon it might also be misleading. I figure that the Artwork forum is a place to develop and collaborate on artwork ideas, not just a place to show finalized wallpapers and graphics (though it is that too).
I consider that '#! CRUNCHBANG LINUX', as it appears on the top of this website, is the official logo, with the light Helvetica '#!' being an official shorthand. I love the minimalism and hope this never gets diluted.
Philip is great at embracing community art though, so go nuts.
I wonder if at some point #! would go with a free font instead. Don't get me wrong, I like Helvetica, but it's a shame that we can't get something GPL'd to work. Nimbus Sans L comes close to Helvetica in many ways but they don't have a light version.

i made the discovery that my graphical skills suck. i would greatly appreciate it if some skilled fella could make a B/W-version.
lol. Were you thinking of a true black and white version or do you mean a greyscale version? The only coloured bit in there is the green bandana. Let me know and I'll likely create one pretty quickly.

Not sure how the hell they've made this work with publishers but there is quite a lot of very neat stuff over there.

Re: CrunchBang featured in Linux Format (26 replies, posted in CrunchBang Talk)
I really like LXF, but being in the states, I have a hard time justifying paying over $100 for a magazine. I will try to get to Barnes and Noble to pickup the one with #! on it. What isthe issue number for it?
Michael
lol. I took out a 2nd mortgage last year to buy a couple of issues too.
I always thumb through it and have to really justify the 13 bucks they want for it up here. But rest assured the issue featuring #! will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine. ![]()
ps. TopGear and Car are the exact same too.. very pricey. Their production quality is miles above most US car magazines though. I've never been entirely sure how they justify it business-wise. But I don't complain. Buying expensive British magazines is one of my guilty little pleasures. ![]()

Wouldn't it be neat if we could get Conky displayed on a perspective plane like that... I can't see why there wouldn't be some sort of Compiz thing that could accomplish it easily.

I REALLY like this!
Lovely colors, and nicely put together.
I really whish I had the time, patience and talent to get into Inkscape...
Guess I'll have to stick to Gimp!
It's funny because I'm kinda the opposite. I use the Gimp for photo retouching etc, but I've never delved into it nearly as much as Inkscape.
And although this is undoubtedly arguable, I think if you can be proficient at Gimp you will have NO problem being proficient at Inkscape.

Topic: #! Ninja Refinements (65 replies, posted in Artwork & Screenshots)
I'm still playing around with the ninja concept and decided to refine him a little bit. Mostly it's in the major proportions. He's shorter, stouter, a little cuter and more cartoonish and maybe even a little more menacing at the same time
. I also changed his cap into a proper bandana. The eyes though are the most trouble for me. I like the shape and look of them, but it's the colour/treatment of the eyes that are still in a little doubt for me.
I think it looks better than the original, but I'd love to hear your opinions.
I've shown the base images large enough here so that if people want to play around with them in the Gimp they can. I've also posted the svg for people to use as well. You'll find a few wallpaper concepts I've made with the little guy too. ![]()

Re: Crunchbang Bubbles (Widescreen Added) (13 replies, posted in Artwork & Screenshots)
And to answer your question, I did this in Inkscape. I tend to do most of my work in Inkscape now, though I used to use Gimp a lot. I'll be glad to tell you how to the rays if you want, they're pretty easy.
I also did a wallpaper for Linux Mint along the same lines, but used the Gimp for that one.
I did something similar (the light rays part that is) when I did a photo treatment of my daughter this past Halloween. I did it using Inkscape (yes Inkscape, not Gimp - don't know why.. just more comfortable with it): http://blog.rfquerin.org/2008/11/07/i-m -rockstar/
I think Inkscape has its place even in photo treatments sometimes. I find it easier to do certain things like photo framing, drop shadows and the like in Inkscape sometimes rather than the Gimp, but that's just me I guess.

WoW Excellent idea & nice art work !!! Could you post the logo as a PnG alone ?
The 3 first links are also dead here
Thanks for kind words and the heads up on the direct links. I've since changed them to be hosted on imageshack instead. I'm not sure why they're dead since the images right in the post are from the same source. Hmm.
I'll see about creating a version of the logo in png only.
