Re: #! zero (47 replies, posted in Feedback & Suggestions)
I'm using Xubuntu 10.04 and it takes up less than 3 gb on my 80 gig HDD. Yet I have always read descriptions of it as "bloated," but never understood why.
It stems from previous versions of Xubuntu which included things that were unnecessary, like gnome-panel and such. Thus the download was bloated, if not the actual performance. Many preferred a clean XFCE install along with a core ubuntu net install, purists.

Been away for awhile and waiting on #! Statler to go official, but thats like waiting on Google anything to leave beta >.>
I really like your desktop, not sure how you wrangled the bar at the bottom together and not a fan of scenery photos myself but this looks incredibly nice and tranquil.
Another DT I was inspired to make.
Mandriva 2010.1 Openbox
Very nice you pulled this off in Mandriva, I have my sis' comp using PCLinuxOS (for simplicity of maintenance, OOB and upkeep) and I really like your dark workspace.

My music tastes are wide and varied... it's easier to list what I don't like-
Country (with the exception of some of Cash's music)
Hip Hop
Today's Thug Radio (the gangsta crap all the white male teens LOVE)
Female Pop Singers (with the rare exception of Stevie Nicks)

Re: Removal of "delete post/topic" privileges (16 replies, posted in News & Announcements)
Dear forum users,
Due to some unfortunate, recent events it has been necessary to remove members' "delete" privileges for posts and topics. A former member has deleted in excess of 190+ posts/topics in the space of a day, taking with it some valuable contributions made by other members. We feel this is unfair to the forum users who have willingly contributed to the community and put thought, time and effort in to constructing their posts.
From now, if you require a topic or post of yours to be deleted, please make a request to any of the moderators via a PM, and include your reasons for deletion. Your request will then be considered.
We apologise that we have had to implement this measure but hope that you realise our reasons for doing so.
Sorry for any inconvenience.
Becky
While I enjoyed the ability to delete a post of mine (mainly once it became irrelevant, as in links to 24 hour netbook deals after they expired
) , I can comply understand that such abuse as you mentioned needed to be dealt with in some manner. I think I can deal with simply voiding my text in lieu of potential deleting an entire thread.

Re: What apps do you miss from Windows? (123 replies, posted in Off Topic / General Chat)
Interesting and a bit humorous...I thought this was the "What apps do you miss from Windows?" thread. I mention I miss games if/when I am in Linux, which is on topic and can not be denied, I DO miss them. Yet there are replies that others do NOT miss them, which is off topic. If you don't miss them, why bring it up? To counter the FACT that I DO miss them?
Funny stuff.
Should I go on to say all the stuff being missed and whined about by everyone else is completely NOT missed by me? Does that counter the fact others DO miss them?
LOL

Re: What apps do you miss from Windows? (123 replies, posted in Off Topic / General Chat)
I think gameing is underrated on linux. I can play atari through playstation2(admittedly not many ps2 games yet) theres tons of quality flash games, some really good native games. Plus a lot of windows games run fine, I've been playing portal lately and it runs fine.
Some of the games I have played may run on Linux, via Wine, but not flawlessly. With bugs, glitches, bad performance and crashes.
I think the word you were looking for wasn't underrated, it was underperform.
Even many of the flash games I have played suffered performance hits on Linux that were non-existant on Windows.
If given the choice of a tricycle or a motorcycle to get from point a to point b, even though they both work and perform, I am using the motorcycle. Call me crazy.

Games - the only reason I keep using windows...I really wish Linux was up to snuff for gaming, I don't see that happening without a seriously drastic change in development from game companies.
I am semi-hopeful Google Chrome OS may get game developers interested, but due to Google Chrome being first and foremost a cloud computing OS, I doubt it will even attempt to have any serious gaming-appeal.

Re: Google Chrome OS will be out in 2010, most probably!!! (55 replies, posted in Off Topic / General Chat)
Here’s what we know
* It will boot directly into the Chrome Web browser
* It will not be designed to have local storage; all data will be stored in the cloud
http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/hiner/?p=2131
Since it has been announced this OS will work with netbooks AND desktops, I doubt it will have no means to access local storage or force boot into a web browser. Perhaps this is how it stood or currently stands in development, but I seriously doubt this is how it will function on release. Without access to local storage are all the drivers gonna be firmware? I can't see that type of proprietary OS'ness working out, no matter what company is behind it. In fact how would it even boot without local drivers? It couldn't connect to the internet....so it must have access to local drives (they can call it storage, whatever), and as long as it can access local drives, it can store data there.

the idea of make it for the cloud is the thing that discomforts me
The entire philosophy behind this OS will be basically a Web Based OS. I assume you can use the apps when offline but overall I doubt this will be the OS for you if you don't spend most of your time in a browser or other internet interface like email/gmail, twitter, instant messenger, skype, etc.

The most exciting part of the Google Chrome OS will be bringing in 3rd party HARDWARE developers...even though this OS is targetted to netbooks I am hoping user enthusiasm as well as developer enthusiasm MAY bring in far better and wider ranging driver support for Linux based systems. I have been excited about this potential ever since people started squeezing Android in to netbooks.

A bit OT (binaries are available on windows only)
For the ones who are chrome-privacy-concerned, you can download and use a rebuild w/o the google crap.
http://www.srware.net/en/software_srwar wnload.phpSource is provided, so the brave can try a port to ubuntu, or ask the developer for a Linux release.
Um...unless something changed rebuilding the windows source for linux doesn't work properly. Currently chromium-browser is available, built on the same webkit base code IIRC.

Re: Where are the default theme's xbm files? (4 replies, posted in WM/DE Talk)
If there are no xbms in the openbox-3 dir then the theme uses the default xbms, which I believe are hardcoded as a fall back (this might be lies). They are 6x6 xbms, If you need your xbm to centre (if you have non-parentrelative, this is generally the way) you will need to make it an even number width/height.
If the theme uses the defaults then you can simply add your own xbms to override this (just to clarify what might be missed).

Re: howto set default screen resolution? (2 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
If the issue is only after log in you can also set it via your autostart.sh script.
For instance I use this:
(sleep 5s && xrandr --output LCD --off) &
xrandr --output DFP1 --mode "1920x1080" &
Since I have my laptop connected to an TV via HDMI and I want my laptop LCD off, this is what I use in my autostart.sh.
If you know the name of your device you would simply use:
xrandr --output DEVICE --mode "widthxheight" &Insert your actual device name at DEVICE and your actual resolution in widthxheight. I also set a few other modes in my menu.xml so I can change resolutions with the simple right-click menu of Openbox.

Re: Right Click Menu Font Change? (3 replies, posted in WM/DE Talk)
A word of warning when changing fonts set in obconf, if you end up with a font it does not like it will not reopen properly and you will end up having to edit it via rc.xml as anon mentioned, and use reconfigure after making changes.

There is also idesk and Folder View Screenlet if you plan to use compositing and screenlets, this option may give you more control than just having icons on the desktop.

Top right and bottom of the screen is conky, top left is tint2.
The font on the conky displays just works so well. Is this that Yanone Kaffesatz font? I didn't think it would work so well at smaller sizes. Boy was I wrong. Nice!
Yep, it has become a favorite.
Hrm...I just realized I should point out the Kaffeesatz font is at 13 pitch, depends on what "smaller" is. 42" display. ![]()

Try changing GDM themes, I think the problem might just be the CrunchBang theme.
It worked for me.
