Got me a sparkly new Waldorf today, and settling into the new (but still familiar big_smile ) digs. Install was uneventful (as usual, which is so nice). Couple of post install issues (mostly cosmetic) and if I don't find it them looking through the forum or a Google search I'll start separate threads. Thanks @corenominal for another nice release!

Yeah, the Memorex thing is kind of weird and I haven't had the best of luck with it lately either (DVD+R in my case, starting last year), and it was a problem with both Linux and Windows, different systems and burners. I have a bunch of it though somewhere since they sent another spindle when I contacted them but I switched to Verbatim and haven't had problems since.

It's really dependent on what you need to use it for. I don't like one update making multiple applications wonky so I'll lock and freeze versions when I'm happy with the video apps (though at the time I originally started using #! for some video work Statler was still Testing where updates were still rolling in, which is why I was wondering which version the OP is using).

Edit- I should clarify, specific versions of specific things (not the entire system) so you don't roll up on something like libavcodec(*) on an update without checking first to see if anyone is having problems before taking it. Then, if it looks good to go, unlock and go for it. But as a default state and if it's Testing, I like playing it safe. Like you mentioned, Stable really shouldn't have those issues at this point.

I've used it on #! and it's worked pretty well. First, you might just want to make sure that suggested packages aren't considered dependencies in your package manager so you don't pull in the entire KDE desktop- but you might have to track down other packages though that's still better than pulling in the desktop. Also make sure you install the frei0r-plugins package since if I recall right it's not actually listed as a dependency so won't get pulled in.

I still do most editing in Windows and transcodes or up/downconverts in Linux, but I've done a bit of lightweight editing in Openshot and LiVES. LiVES converts everything to an image sequence on import  (which could be good or bad depending on what you want) but I've found it helpful for recovering damaged or otherwise difficult video by copying out the cache folder in the LiVES temp directory while it's running to import the image sequence into whichever editor I'm using (usually Vegas).

I don't do actual editing with Kino, but I like it better than Kdenlive for DV captures.

My Statler box is totally down right now so I don't have it available for reference (and I don't know which version of #! you're running), but in general if you haven't worked with the Debian Multimedia repository yet you'll want to get familiar with that (there should be a good info on that in the forums via search). If you use the Multimedia repository I'd suggest using just that for both editing applications and media players to keep it clean. And once you've got everything set up to your liking I'd recommend locking versions since there might be conflicts between the main Debian repository and Multimedia with regards to both applications and codecs which could cause a problem at an update.

Hope that helps!

(Edit- the Debian Multimedia repository has moved, see vrkalak's post here on how to enable it)

Gary Numan - The Pleasure Principle

Hi Aethernet and welcome!

CrunchBang is currently based on Debian Squeeze and I'm afraid you can't get here from there. smile

But there are some boot cheat codes you can try on the live cd so if you post up what video card you have, someone might know the right one for your card so you don't have to try them all.

You should be able to edit the thread title if that's something you want to try (or you could start a new thread).

Cool and thanks! Now we can get more eyes on the problem! big_smile

Hi rhaven!  I don't think there was a supported inline upgrade path from r20110207 to r20111125 (or current).

http://corenominal.org/2011/11/26/updat … er-images/

In addition to xaos52's questions/suggestions, I'm wondering about the Plymouth boot splash. It was in the older image but it's no longer used at boot, so that seems like something that could have gotten wonkified.

Hi arelim and welcome! I also had problems viewing the screenshots until I used a proxy so maybe you could rehost them somewhere like imgurl and post thumbnail links back in the thread so we can all see them.

I haven't seen anything quite like that before, but with what you described with your first post and the later fresh install being worse I'm wondering if it's an install/setup issue. Maybe a locale problem or *possibly* a graphics rendering problem, but with the latter I don't know the incorrect characters would be consistent like they are (in some cases it looks like it's trying to substitute- like on "l" but that doesn't really explain the holes in "p" and "s").

But if you can rehost 'em up maybe someone will recognize what's actually going on.

Hi b4dave! I do captures but mine are through Firewire/IEEE1394 using a Canopus ADVC-100 with Kino as the capture application. There are some tutorials on YouTube showing how to do it with USB (they're using a Dazzle and TV Time) here:

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL … ature=plcp

To echo rhowaldt, after you get the video in, you have plenty of options to get it out to disc. My preferred workflow for that type of project is capturing from tape to DV-AVI, cropping and minor editing in Kdenlive, exporting it back out to DV and compressing it MPEG-2 using WinFF, but there are a few applications to choose from. I do most of the actual authoring to DVD in Windows, but I've used DVD-Styler in Linux with good results. K3b can burn DVD compliant discs. If you want to stick with completely open formats you'll probably want to experiment to get the best quality but you won't be able to create a standalone player compliant DVD (though many players nowadays can read a variety of formats in file mode).

My capturing is done on Mint 10 right now- for CrunchBang you may need to enable the Debian Multimedia Repository. I also use several KDE applications by themselves (not the full DE) on both Mint/Gnome and CrunchBang/Openbox and it's worked out well so far.

Looks like we're gonna need a designated sudoer.

I have a recurring one where I'm in a different house (sometimes it's an apartment) and it's unfamiliar, but in my dream I know I live there and then people start showing up for a party I didn't realize I was hosting.

Happy Holidays, everyone!

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issue … l?id=96926

I found out the hard way on my Mint box (but downgraded back to 13 well enough).

If you're not using font smoothing with the LCD filter it *probably* won't effect you but if you are, you might want to hold back on upgrading for now.

@newgamernik, it does sound like an overheating thing, does it always read 50c or do you usually see a change between idle and load?

@sigma, welcome back to Linux! I think what's going on with yours is pretty different so your first instinct was right (starting a new thread). Blackbox, neat! It's still really usable if ya wanna go retro. big_smile

Try reversing the order on your country code, I *think* the last one in the list becomes the default layout.

Have a happy holiday also! big_smile

^Don't feel embarrassed big_smile. It really does look like nothing's happening.

Do you have mlocate installed? It can help track down stuff quickly if something like this happens again. After installing it from the repos, in a terminal run 'sudo updatedb' to index your files, then you can search by:

locate *.pdf (or whatever extension you're looking for)

and if you get too much stuff back you can send the screen output to a file with:

locate *.pdf > filename

then look in the output file you just created.

If it's a brand new file that's missing you can refresh by running 'sudo updatedb' before searching on it.

Getting some of the formats working is actually a bit confusing setup-wise since I don't think anything refers to unstripped by name (anymore), but something to check is to make sure you're using the libavformat52/libavcodec52 library from the multimedia repository and not the one from the main Debian repository. The packages themselves have the same names so what I do is check it by the package maintainer and version. If you're using the right one the maintainer will be listed as Christian Marillat on the ones from the multimedia repo in Synaptic.

Current version number here (Multimedia repo Stable):
http://www.debian-multimedia.org/dists/ … rmat52.php

to compare to: http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/libavformat52 (Debian repo Stable)

If you're using Synaptic you may have several versions available and *may* need to force version (and then optionally lock the package version).

Edit- depending on the application you're using for the encoding/transcoding you may need additional libraries or (like in the case of WinFF or Arista) output format preset(s) files.

@shengchieh I have an S2031 as part of a dual monitor setup and I like it a lot. I ran into one issue but it was an easy fix. If you are using Openbox and the VGA connection (DVI is better) and text is blurry, kill Conky and hit the "OK" button (it should resync it), then set Conky to a longer delay at startup (3 seconds should be good) in .config/openbox/autostart.sh

For some reason it's not happy unless the wallpaper (nitrogen) loads first fully with my setup (yours might be good to go right away and its fine on another pc with the DVI connection). It's a pretty decent casual use monitor and great for the price and the salesperson wasn't correct, it works fine in Linux.

I've used it with both the open ATI driver and (currently when I switched cards) the nVidia proprietary driver. If you need for whatever reason to update xorg.conf (you might not need this, but just in case) the info for the monitor section is:

ModelName     "HP S2031"
HorizSync         24.0 - 83.0
VertRefresh     50.0 - 76.0

It runs a little hot (color-wise) out of the box and leans a bit toward yellowish to neutral on grays so if you want any further calibration beyond brightness and contrast lemme know and I'll post up my settings.

I like Chesterfields but smoke Pyramids (still Liggett Group but cheaper). I ended up not smoking for about a week back in April and probably should have quit then.
