Of course Dog Stories abound. You've maybe heard about Hachiko who used to meet his master, a professor Ueno, every evening at Shibuya station in Tokyo, till one day his master didn't appear. He'd died of a stroke, but Hachiko showed up every day for the next 10 years at the time of the train Professor Ueno would have been on, looking at each traveller's face in case it was him... Now there's a statue of Hachiko at Shibuya.
--------------------------------------------------
But this is a story my wife told me about the dog that used to be in her house years ago, before we got married. At that time she had her own apartment on the 3rd floor of her parents's building - they lived on the 2nd floor and there was a shop on the ground floor. The family dog used to keep to the ground floor mostly, sometimes come up to the second floor but never to the third floor - he was getting a bit old and weak, apart from anything. Anyway, my wife-to-be was ill in bed upstairs for some months at that time, but one day much to her surprise the dog showed up! The only time he'd ever come up to the third floor. The next day he died. It's hard not to think he'd come up to say goodbye.

Yes, youtube-viewer is very nice. When I don't feel like slowing down the machine with video: 'youtube-viewer --novideo --all -order-by=rating search terms' gives you a nice custom radio stream. ![]()
Here's Sekouba Bambino singing a James Brown song!

Of course, after the Cuban music wave, Bob Marley and James Brown had huge influences on African music.
Recently Afropop Worldwide had an interesting programme on recent music in Ghana and Ivory Coast:

To be honest, funk/hiphop isn't really my thing, but I have to enjoy Fela Kuti's Afrobeat. Here's a full 30min. version of Army Arrangement:

It was either this or Zombie that got him a visit from some soldiers who were Not Amused and beat him up.

@missinglink, are you sure the "crazy shadows" thing is a different issue?
I'm using cairo-compmgr now ala Statler, but when I was using xcompmgr on #! 9.04 the same sort of thing happened sometimes. You could fix it then by restarting xcompmgr. It looks as if Compton (an xcompmgr fork) still hasn't got round whatever it was.

No crashes of any kind here on Stable with Thunar 1.0.2
The only problem I've ever had iirc is that occasionally you have to exit and return to a directory to see an added or removed file properly displayed.

Re: #!'ers Global Sounds and Rhythms (256 replies, posted in Off Topic / General Chat)
Hey, I just spent nearly two weeks in the bus with a terrible cold, and could hardly speak...
Anyway there's lots of music I'd like to talk about, but still haven't had time to search for all the right youtube links etc so I can share some favourite songs. I don't want to just put up a link and say "hey, listen to this" if I haven't listened to it myself, so today I'll just throw our some names. You could try Youtube searches...
To start with, there's Sekuba Bambino who used to sing with Bembeya Jazz. He's bigger in Africa than in the West apparently.
I love African Reggae - it's an obvious combination of course. Check Alpha Blondie from Ivory Coast.
Ghana funk and afrobeat: Ebo Taylor hasn't been mentioned yet!
But the King of Afrobeat is of course Fela Kuti from Nigeria. Two of his sons Femi Kuti and Seun Kuti are also putting out good stuff. I seem to remember another guy called Sunny Okusun.
A completely different style from Nigeria is Juju music, with the super-famous Sunny Ade, and also Chief Ebenezer Obey and others.
Back to Ghana, my favourite music from this region must be Highlife. I love this stuff! I'm going to have to search around for some links to good songs so I can convince at least some of you how great this is!
So, sorry, no music links today, but some will come soon, I promise. ![]()

echo "${one_a^}, $one_b $two_a $two_b, that $three_a $three_b $verb $four_a $four_b."11 2012-05-18 05:40:18

^As you say. The "selection" is constantly updated. The "clipboard", that Ctrl+V goes to, is in a different place - you can have both.
A clipboard manager like clipman lets you keep a whole list of clipboard contents. Personally, I think clipman would be less useful without its system tray icon.

rsync
What's the deal with '-z' compression?
It's not a tar.gz type compression so what does it do exactly?
Ooh, you handed me, on a plate, a chance to suggest a look at "man rsync". ![]()
What does one need to "restore" from a rsync backup? Currently I just copy them back.
afaik that's all you need to do for your own stuff. rsync can, if you choose the right options, backup other users' files with ownerships and permissions intact. If you want to restore those files with all that stuff still correct then you have to do it as root, and if you don't want all the restored files to belong to root, then not plain copying but rsyncing, again with the right options set, will be needed.

it would be cool to have an image with all the things that were added later - like compton, etc
You mean, an image based on Squeeze, but with a load of apps added that really belong to Wheezy? Quite a lot of work there I'd guess...

Sector, till you get to grips with rsnapshot, re the
/home/sector11/.s11bk-logs/home_2012·05·14·16·43·43.txt: No such file or directorystuff. Can you make a file with that same name? ie in a terminal:
touch /home/sector11/.s11bk-logs/home_2012·05·14·16·43·43.txtIf that works try 'echo "test" > thatfilename' and if that works, try substituting the date code for the last bit of the filename... eventually you'll hit what was causing the problem, with any luck.

Re: #! what kind of Anti Virus and Anti Malaware do you recommend. (24 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
The one aspect that hasn't been mentioned too much is not wanting to send an infected file to our friends running Windows. You get a file as an email attachment or download from the net and while it might not be able to harm you, it would be a courtesy to run a quick scan over it before sending it on to a friend.
It's probably easier to do that scan when stuff arrives than at sending time. I Installed clamav recently for that purpose, and just do a general scan of ~/downloads before moving anything out of it.
When I remember. ![]()

Re: The Big Small Funny Crazy Weird Cute Stupid Insane Crunch-Dog Thread (35 replies, posted in Off Topic / General Chat)
We never had dogs at home, for whatever reasons, but both my grandparents' homes did. My Mum's parents had two corgis (like Her Majesty's) - just calm good-tempered dogs that let us little kids pull their ears or whatever with not a word of complaint.
My Dad's folks had a little farm in North Wales, where we went every Summer. They had two Welsh sheepdogs - a kind of collie I think. These are great animals - friendly, intelligent and very hardworking - maybe not ideal for an urban apartment though. One, "Shep" was friendly with everybody while "Puppy" was a bit more shy, and, according to my granny, a bit nervous and snappy, so they were careful not to let us little kids mess with him too much.
One year, though, we'd just arrived for our annual holiday and my brother and I were sitting in the barn on some straw bales when Puppy chanced by and, obviously delighted to see us, ran up and kissed us both. That was when I learned that animals have feelings just like human beings, and the memory is still sharp.
But these Welsh sheepdogs are amazing animals in other ways too. Many years later, when Shep, Puppy and my granddad had all passed away, my granny had a young bitch puppy called Llisty (not sure about the spelling). Llisty had had no sheepdog training at all, but... left to her own devices she would round up all the hens who were roaming around the farmyard, herd them into a corner and keep them there. She had to be called off, or the hens would have been stuck in that corner all day. As I said, not a minute of training ( did her mother fit in a few hours of Basic Herding on the quiet at some point? ) so it had to have been hardwired by breeding alone! Hard to believe. Anyway my granny eventually had to give her away to a neighbouring farmer because it was obvious she wanted to work and was bored to tears keeping an old lady company.
Maybe we'll have a dog here after we retire and have the time for walks and stuff. The "standard" Japanese dog's quite good too, and would probably enjoy our country place.
