I had a series of these I had worked on awhile back. They were on an external USB harddrive. Then one day as I was attempting to 'dd' an iso onto a USB stick while the external drive was also attached I gave the wrong '/dev/sdb' number as the argument for the outfile. mad
Bye, bye backups, and artwork, and music, and a lot of other stuff. Learned a lesson there. Anyway, I glad you like it.

@omns: It's a great background, and the pack has some other great backgrounds that would lend themselves well to a #! wallpaper.

@corenominal: Glad you like it. By the way great job on all you've done here. It's come a long way since I last ran #!. The startup script is the best out there.

Thank you all it's good to be back. The community here is a big draw.

@omns: I've been a bit busy lately, and haven't been able to do as much art as normal. That said, browsing the 'Artwork' section of the forums has gotten the creative juices flowing. smile

@anonymous: I stuck with Arch the first time for quite awhile (~6 months or more). That's a long time for me. I am a notorious distro hopper, but lately I've begun to just want to get things done so I 've been on a search for something I can stick with.  I had installed Arch, and was in the process of configuring XMonad when I decided to just install something which was already complete.  I love Arch, but at the moment I just don't have the time to commit to configuring Arch the way I want. (Currently studying to take my CCNA certification and working towards a degree)  #!'s use of Debian is a big draw, the work that Corenominal & the community have put into the distro, and the family feel of the community all conspired to bring me back.  That's a long winded way of saying I love #! smile

I left Crunchbang for awhile, going through Arch, Ubuntu, Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint, Arch, and finally back here. I'm trying XFCE this time around, and I do believe I just may stay here for good. We'll see.

The post-install script is beyond a doubt the best I have seen. Mint has some wonderful tools they have built, but even their post-install is not as well thought out. Great job! smile

Michael

If you want minimalist use Arch with screen/mutt/links/vim/mpd.

Otherwise...remove what you don't want, and add what you want. You can't please everyone.

w1zard, I've been trying to add line to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist but the system doesn't allow me save, kinda lack of authority. How about that?

Thanks a lot in advance smile

Try:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

You'll need to enter your password, then you will be able to save your changes.

I have a Toshiba Satellite that has an Atheros wifi card, and I have been having issues with my wireless dropping then being unable to reconnect. I'll see if this fixes the problem.
I've used the ath_pci module before with no problems, and wasn't aware that the ath5k was being used now. tongue

Yeah, it looks like bubbles or buttons hmm
I need to hone up on the tiled clones. It still makes me scratch my head. Have you done a screencast on that?

Not yet...soon!
I promise! wink

Very nice. As far as creating a font, check out YourFonts.
You either print out the pdf, and hand write in the letters, etc., or you can download the image of the sheet, and edit it in the Gimp or Inkscape probably. Upload the file, wait about 5 minutes, and download your font. You can create as many letters as you want.
I made a handwritten font with my wacom tablet the other day in about 15 minutes just to try it out. Pretty cool!
Great work as always smile

i do such renders with vista x64, nvidia CUDA and apophysis!

I did this in Apophysis 2.08b. You can find the flame code here. I couldn't get the emoticon out of it, it should be a "p". Nice fractals by the way. Check out ClaireJones for some great tutorials.
Apophysis will run on Wine, although it throws up some error at the end of rendering. The renders turn out fine, so "say la viz"! wink

To everyone else...:) Thank you!

@little red planet: Yeah, the font was a tough one. Feel free to play around with it. Basically I took BW Grand Julian, colorized it in GIMP, and added a gradient layer on top to fade out the edges.

I have about six more fractals I need to render, now I need to find the time. wink

After posting that I kind of smacked my forehead and wondered why I didn't give Gimp a try with one of it's calligraphy brushes and the tablet. So I did just that and did several attempts on one canvas to see if anything looked good. I'm not sure I could recreate any specific one, but maybe it could be brought into Inkscape, traced and played with there. Here's the image:

Hi Richard - THAT'S the look I was trying for! I wanted that fading/scratchy looking end or sign-off to each of the lines to give it a more realistic look There's probably a filter I can use in GIMP to add some noise to the edges as well.
I've got a basic Wacom tablet somewhere at the bottom of my bits and pieces drawer - time to dust it off and fire up the GIMP.
Thanks big_smile

I haven't had a chance to come up with anything yet, but these look really nice. I did have a look at some of the Brush Fonts at DaFont. There are a few nice looking ones over there.
In the Gimp you can use a layer mask, then a rough brush to roughen up the edges.

I'll have to check out git sometime. I'll look forward to the wiki.

Interesting idea. I've used bzr off and on to version control my config files. If I screw the pooch it's pretty easy to restore back to the working version. The nice thing with bzr is it isn't necessary to create a repo, just

bzr init

in the directory you want to version control and there you go.
What you're doing would be nice, especially for keeping two computers up to date.

Hi arpinux,
That's definitely an improvement, but what I'm trying to achieve is the look you would get from using a bristle calligraphy brush and black paint, so that the edges of the characters are imperfect.
I know I can use the calligraphy tool to achieve the thin/broad brush strokes, but how do I get that painted effect?
I've been trawling through rfquerin's and heathenx's screencast tutorials but so far haven't found anything relevant.
Oh, and you're welcome (Knoppix 6.0) wink

It could probably be done in Inkscape (I'd have to play around with it a bit), but it would probably be easier in the Gimp or (*in a whisper) Photoshop.
Let me see what I can do.
