Thought id share my wav audio files for anyone who wants to download them.
You can preview them too.

I made them myself using text to speech.
She speaks in broken english with an indian accent.
Kinda cute.

If you want to add them to crunchbang, right click the desktop, go to System/Login Setup (GDM).
Then choose the 'accessibility' tab at the top of the Login Window Preferences box.
Copy the wav files to any folder and set the path(s) on the accessibility page to each wav file.

[Edit] Replace login failed with the default 'bleep' or no sound as it overlaps. Needs to be a short 'error' kinda sound instead.

After finally getting wifi connected@home thanks to pvsage and anonymous, i decided to have a go at another challenge... Plan B: (or emergency & mobile broadband access when away from home).

How can i use my mobile/cell phones 3G/gprs data plan when im on the road with the netbook for mobile broadband access?
And why use the USB cable when i have a perfectly good bluetooth connection setup between my phone and my netbook?

Ok, if i (a noob) can do it, so can you!
So i set out to hunt for answers on google and sure enough someone has already thought of it and posted the setup.

I now have a nice slick bluetooth broadband access on my Sony Ericsson K660i, but you must setup bluetooth first as Nik_Doof has posted under 'tips & tricks'.

I even added the connect and disconnect commands to the openbox config menu so i dont have to type 'pon Bluetooth Dialup' in terminator.

It's not as fast as my home wifi network, but at; (0.66Mb/s download. 0.27Mb/s upload).. its better then nothing and i dont have to buy a dongle or broadband plan. I turned off 'automatically connect to wifi' so i can choose connections between home and the road.

Yippee!

There are a couple of errors on this page but they are obvious. Go with your gut instinct;

Ok, i extracted Iron to the /home/xxxx/desktop directory.
When i type 'firefox' in a terminator box it loads firefox.
When i type chromium-browser or iron in the same terminator box, they dont load.

[Edited] Wait, i got them all working.
The correct path and executable was;
/opt/google/chrome/chrome
'chrome' is the right executable.
Therefore iron should work the same way.

If you want to uninstall google chrome;
sudo apt-get remove google-chrome-unstable

The ID thing might be a good marketing strategy for the paranoid, but i think its pointless as were all being monitored regardless. Didn't we lose our rights to privacy/anonymity a few years ago now, justified by the threat of terrorism?

Originally I installed goggle-chrome-unstable_current_i386.deb from my /home/desktop dir.
And it installed it to the /opt/google/chrome dir.
I can open that folder and start the 'Google Chrome' icon no problem.

It's not working yet though lol.

I went to preferences/Openbox Config/edit menu.xml

Changed </item>
<item label="Web Browser">
<action name="Execute">
<execute>
chromium
</execute>
</action>

Then copied line 48-55 and pasted it at line 56 and changed 'label' to Chrome and <execute> chromium </execute>

(So i have two options of browsers)

Then went to rc.xml and changed the web browser (super+w) from firefox to chromium.
Rebooted.
New Chromium menu is there.
But when i click either of the 3 ways to start chromium nothing happens?
/Internet/Firefox still works

Ive installed chrome on #! crunchbang.
It starts up faster then firefox and chrome is my prefered choice on windows also for the same reason.
Firefox seems to 'hang' a bit waiting for webpages to load where chrome has already loaded them.
I tried to make chrome the default browser using a command line i found googling but that hasnt worked.
Firefox still opens when i click 'web browser' in the main menu.
The 'make chrome my default browser' is greyed out in chrome settings.

How do i add chrome to the 'main menu'?
At least added to the menu, i still have a choice of browser.

Yup, im gonna try that shortly.
Theres a 5 port hub and a bunch of Cat5's attached to the wifi/cable modem upstairs i should be able to plug directly into the netbook and see if i can run by those commands again.

OK, all of the above needs to be done with a working network connection. I think both anonymous and I have been assuming that you had a wired network you could plug into; without that, things get a lot harder.

Yes, i dont have a working network connection on the netbook yet as this is the reason i need to install the driver for the wifi.
Im using my windows PC to post these messages and download anything i need for the netbook and transfer it over with a flash stick.

Also, i downloaded the new version of gcc but havent installed it yet as i just checked the synaptic package manager and a quick search for gcc shows up 'gcc-4.3-base'. Highlighting it says '4.3.3-5ubuntu4', 'The GNU Compiler Collection (base package). The only option's are mark for removal/complete removal...
But when i run 'gcc' in terminator it says:

Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package>

Ok, i was able to follow your instructions.
At the 'make' point i got back errors, ill paste those below.
I made the mistake of typing 'sudo make install' after the previous 'make' command, but it reported the same errors anyhow.
(I just figured out i had to download Notepad++ to read linux files transfered to windows)
So this is a copy/paste copy of the terminator window.

Great news!
I found the fix while googling for the past 12 hours.
Wasn't easy to find but this is where my limitation of linux stops and i need help with the next step of installing the driver for it.

It indeed turns out i have a Via Arena VT6656 wireless chipset.
This page explains all why i have been banging my head against the keyboard for days.

The very last post with the fix has a link to the Via drivers website so i downloaded the driver.

phoozle then goes on to say.. "Download the latest version, extract folder, make, sudo make install, reboot. Fixed "

I know that sounds simple, but to me it sounds like being given instructions from a dying klingon captain which buttons to press on the ship's console, to avoid it plowing into an oncoming planet.

The readme file inside the driver says:

1. user need to be sure the wpa_supplicant and wpa_supplicnat.conf is in currnet folder;
2. compile driver_event.c, for instance:#gcc -o event driver_event.c get the object code "event";
3. install VT6656 module;

I need internet access on my #! netbook.
Both Network Manager & WiCd fail at this stage.
I'll fight that battle another day.

Plan B:
I have an internet 3G data plan with Virgin on my Sony Ericsson K660i and have it paired up to bluetooth on #!
I rarely use the data plan it goes to waste most months so the #! would be perfect and great mobility too.

I'm trying to figure out now how do i actually connect my apps like firefox, pigeon, email etc to the net through my phone?
Do i have to log on the net with the phone first?

I do have a smartphone too so i might leave it there until im confident with the phone which ill probably use as mobile internet access, or emergency net which is looking closer then i wanted.
Noticed there was eyecandy too and couldnt resist uncommenting that for day.

Now all i really have left to do is get the NM or Wicd working and ive tried them both.
Just finished reinstalling NM after trying Wicd which failed too.
The top post on this page worked for me; (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7248351).. it was easy to follow but i think my problem isnt the network application's its, the network pci adapter itself... or something isnt switching it on because its not visible when i run all the commands.

Ive tried all the commands given on this site; (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195312) to identify the interface name or any info about it but it keeps on coming up blank. Followed all of pytheas's posts and still couldn't find its name.

Then i found a blog about my netbook at this page; (http://agoranetbook.kayno.net/2009/07/2 … a-adapter/) .. and it seems i either have the vt6656 via arena or the newer Ralink chipset, but i cant tell because i cant detect it. :S

Im trying to get NM working.
Ive added my wireless home network to the network connections box via the edit connections on the desktop icon.
Both wireless and wired have 'never' beside them, whatever that means?
Connect automatically is ticked in wireless settings.
Im picking up no wireless connections at all yet i know on my windows machine there is about 4 or 5 around the neighbourhood always visible including my own.
Theres a red box with a white cross next to the toolbar network icon that says 'No network connection' beside it.

I read the posts about Wicd and tried (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install wicd) command but it says; E: Couldnt find package wicd
Probably because i dont have internet access yet, im not sure.

So i read this post below and thought i would try that.
Thinking maybe it needs autoconnect=true edited in the system-connections network file.
Which is named 'Home Network' which is what i called the entry in the NM wireless tab.
When i try and edit it, it says: "you dont not have the permissions necessary to open the file"
Do i need root access to edit it and how do i do that?

Hi, i need help setting up bluetooth and my mouse.
It's a little harder as a noob navigating around the desktop without a mouse.
Im new to linux so if you could explain the process in simple terms that would help too, thanks.

Ok, so i have installed the livecd onto the hdd and it boots very quick. Impressed!
I have a Koran Agora Pro Netbook (http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/kogan-agora-netbook-pro/)
And an HP 'Targas' bluetooth mouse.
A bluetooth dongle.
(Vista used to be on it but i killdisked it)

I followed the first post instructions except it didnt say where to run the commands so i spent a while in the Run Dialog menu waiting for a response. Then i thought maybe the commands should go in the Terminal box!

I ran 'sudo apt-get install bluez-gnome bluetooth gnome-bluetooth' in the terminal and it installed fine.
I ran '(sleep 5s && bluetooth-applet) &' in the terminal next.
Plugged in my dongle and the bluetooth icon appears... great!
Until i rebooted and the bluetooth icon was gone.
So i ran '(sleep 5s && bluetooth-applet) &' once again in the terminal and plugged in the dongle and have it back again.

Problem is i cant figure out how to close the terminal box without a mouse and navigate to the bluetooth icon to configure my mouse to it. And second problem is how do i keep the bluetooth icon there after rebooting?

I know i probably sound like an idiot right lol
Things will be alot easier with a mouse

Update: I managed to get the mouse working and it shows up on reboot.
Opened a terminal window (super +t) and typed "bluetooth-wizard". No mouse was available until i realised i had a reset button on the mouse. Soon as i hit reset button, the mouse appears. Wow, this is so cool.
