Thanks very much! This just solved the problem that I came on here to post about! smile

That was worryingly easy. Thanks!

So, everything has been working fine since solving this problem: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … 30-driver/

Until a recent update (I'm not quite sure when, but in the last 2 weeks). I just realised that games etc are no longer working - if I try glxgears I get the following output:

X Error of failed request:  BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request:  137 (NV-GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request:  4 ()
Resource id in failed request:  0x2400002
Serial number of failed request:  38
Current serial number in output stream:  38

I'm assuming this is a driver problem, it would be great if someone could tell me what I need to do to fix it...

I was also looking for a new email service and after a bit of research signed up for Lavabit last week. Just thought I'd see if anyone on here was using it and it looks like it gets the #! community thumbs-up!

I recently bought a new ASUS PC which as usual came with Windows pre-installed. Thanks to the information I got from the shop (FNAC) and a bit of hard work, I managed to get a refund of 42 Euros smile

It wasn't the most straightforward procedure ever, but much easier than the horror stories you find on the internet (French information here: http://www.fnac.com/os).

Needless to say, the refund is getting donated to CrunchBang!

Registered via Launchpad with no problems (plus I get a simpler username!)

That worked perfectly, thanks very much! (Except the sudo update-initramfs is missing a command; I just rebooted and missed out this step).

I'm now correctly using the rt2860sta driver, and there are no more phy0 errors.

Two problems solved in two days, that's quite efficient!

The first suggestion didn't help - I just lost the mention of "Wireless networks" in the NetworkManager window.

I am using NetworkManager, and have already tried wicd with no luck.

Here are the outputs of the two commands:

:~$ sudo cat /etc/network/interfaces
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

With dmesg I am getting the following error relating to rt2800:

Following on from my graphics card thread: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/159485/#p159485 (now solved smile) this is a new wireless thread.

lspci -knn gives the following information:

02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: RaLink RT2860 [1814:0781]
Subsystem: RaLink Device [1814:2790]
Kernel driver in use: rt2800pci

I'm using Statler 64-bit with the Liquorix kernel.

I just get no wireless networks showing up. The command "ifconfig wlan0 up" results in the message "SIOCSIFFLAGS: Device or resource busy".

Wireless worked perfectly before I changed to the Liquorix kernel...

I have now successfully installed the 285.05.09 Nvidia driver - no gcc error this time and no kernel source tree error (the linux-headers package was already installed). Games work much better now.

I didn't remove the nouveau driver and the Nvidia installer managed to disable it by creating a modprobe config file.

In relation the first reply by xaos52, I haven't (yet) enabled backports.

I'm putting SOLVED on this thread, I now just to try and sort out the wireless problem.

I won't have access to my linux box until later today, but I know the wireless device is the Ralink RT2860.

It worked perfectly with the live CD and the initial #! install and I assume that it's now broken because I updated to the Liquorix kernel. Is this normal?

I found this fix on the Debian wiki: http://wiki.debian.org/rt2860sta#Squeeze - do you think this will work? In addition, it looks like I may need to use wicd instead of NetworkManager.

I'll report back later. Apologies for this new problem not having much to do with the thread title. I'll start a new thread if necessary...

Okay, I'll try that in the next few days. I just need to figure out why my wireless has stopped working now hmm

Thanks for the replies. I tried the solution described by xaos52 and it did complain about the gcc version, which I overruled. However I then got another error message, "Unable to find the kernel source tree for the currently running kernel".

I have now done another fresh install and this time chose to use the Liquorix kernel (without trying to install the Nvidia driver). After a reboot, the display is much better with resolution at 1920x1080.

So unless I run into problems with games or videos, I think I'll give up on the 285.05.09 driver.

I'm working on a totally new install of 64-bit Statler on a brand new desktop. Everything is working except the driver for the graphics card (Nvidia GeForce GT530). At least, I assume it's a problem with the driver - the resolution won't go high enough for my 24" monitor.

The card possibly requires the 285.05.09 driver that is available on Nvidia's website, but I'm not sure how to check this.

I tried following this howto: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … an-stable/
but it didn't work and created problems with xorg. I have also tried the smxi script which failed with the message "missing required kernel header package".

I've had other error messages relating to gcc 4.3 and gcc 4.4 but as you can guess, I don't really know what I'm doing!

I know there's lots of information on here about Nvidia drivers but I would really appreciate some help.

Incidentally, if it's from Scotland it's called whisky, if it's from Ireland or the USA it's whiskey.

My ageing laptop is now finally heading into retirement and I’m planning on replacing it with a new desktop which will be single-boot CrunchBang.

I know nothing about modern desktops so I’d really like some opinions on the Asus Essentio CM6550:

Intel Core i3-2100
Nvidia GeForce GT530
6GB DDR3 RAM
1TB hard disk

It’s just for standard home use, nothing special except for the occasional game (Minecraft?).

I ended up installing the Liquorix kernel, which has solved the problem.

If it's not too complicated, could someone explain how to downgrade to the previous kernel?

Having done some research, I found this Debian bug report:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=619019

Seems to be a problem with the kernel, and downgrading the kernel should fix the problem. I don't know how to do this though...

As a very rough fix, you can suspend or hibernate then log back in and the cursor should appear.

Exactly the same problem here - update yesterday has caused the cursor to become invisible.

Any ideas? Navigating using Tab is becoming a little annoying!

This photo is from one of the cookery blogs I follow: http://instagr.am/p/-qQE/

Is it some kind of sign? It must be a good omen for 2011 anyway!

I was looking for the same solution; the Dropbox tray icons can be found in ~/.dropbox-dist/icons/hicolor/16x16/status

It's just a matter of desaturating the relevant icons using the GIMP (as suggested above). Personally, I just modified dropboxstatus-idle.png as this is the one that's displayed 99% of the time.

Yesterday it wasn't working, today it shows up straight away. Thanks for the reply, I'm saying this is solved as I guess it's a problem with my DVD drive.

Occasionally I'm reminded of how little I actually know about this OS, or Linux in general for that matter... neutral

I put a movie DVD in the internal drive of my laptop. It makes a few whirring noises then stops. I open VLC, click Media -> Open Disc -> Play, and get the error message "DVDRead could not open the disk "/dev/sr0".

How do I find the correct location for the DVD? I can rip CDs easily enough with Sound Juicer, but I can't seem to get DVDs to play.
