In case you are concerned about google gathering more info about your browsing habits wink you can also use OpenDNS.

nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220

this is a good point!

here is a comparison (i assume OpenDNS supports ipv6):

SOLVED!

browsing problem is related to IPV6 setting in firefox about:config settings!

fix is here:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Error_loading_any_website

(toggle the boolean IPV6 setting!)

HOWEVER, problems also came up when running synaptic...

well, since it's a LOT easier to switch to IPV6 DNS servers vs rebuilding the kernel or screwing around with system settings, i simply reconfigured the router at the casa to use Google's servers:

nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4

now Statler works just fine!

must be a buggy kernel driver... have confirmed same problem in Fedora 14 and Fuduntu (fewt's hacked Fedora 14)...

however, Ubuntu netbook 10.10 does NOT have this problem on my Asus 900!

getting 'no IPV6 routers present' error messages!

although not sure if this is the problem... interface
data remains constant, but it appears that there is
loss of routing, then comes back, then loses routing,
etc.

quite aggravating...

tried manual IP addressing of wifi0, which worked,
but exhibited same symptoms

i can confirm this behavior as well (eeePC 900)

tried both xfce and openbox .iso installs

wireless performed flawlessly under A1, but A2 is somehow horked

symptom:

connects fine
however, intermittent loss of connection (loss of routing)

suspect wifi kernel driver or kernel problem? - will have to check logs

this is sad

:-(

after doinking around with a number of distros for my Linux-based 900 and 1000, i have finally found peace and happiness w/Statler...

took a number of hours to do an upgrade and full install...

however, libxss1 was not installed (!), which threw a temporary roadblock on getting the latest Skype Linux beta up and running...

other than that easy fix (along with having to run the mixer to unmute all the devices), the system seems fine and responsive...

i'm a happy camper - thanks and kudos to the developers!

fyi:

cruncheee-8.10.02.i386 is working great on my Asus 1000 40G... sound, wifi came right up!

i burned the 474MB .iso to CD then booted off a Samsung SE-S084 external USB DVD/+R/W drive (only USB powered - w00t!)

kudos to the developers for putting this together... sound, wifi, shutdown all good!

you have made me a very happy Linux-based OS user (been using Linux since '93, btw - anyone remember Yggdrasil?)

:-)

my eee pc 1000 is used with a USB->serial adaptor to control a Ten Tec RX320 receiver or Argonaut V transceiver for PSK31 operation - the long run time w/the Atom CPU and 6600MAh battery provides for a full afternoon when operating portable in the field - lots of fun!

It is a good idea to install the mbr to the eee disk and not to the sd card.

why? i have a 900 and 1000 and prefer to leave the internal SSD untouched while experimenting with other operating systems (netbsd, openbsd, haiku, etc.)... the bootloader (grub) is installed onto SDHC media with a bootable first partition, and the eee BIOS is used to set drive boot priority - this seems to work quite well...

thanks! the md5 i was looking for on the 8.10.02 release (and recv'd) was:

9faf2d14f51042932d6b0c0136512693

so, now off to run http://aligunduz.org/FUSBi/

update:

installed on partition 1 of a spare thumb drive, and booted to the live session - pretty slick little (sub)distro!

i like that eee-control is present and ready on the desktop! there seems to be everything i'd need at the ready!

good job!
