Hi guys,

I  recently installed Mah-Jong (xmj) on Cruncheee but I am hugely frustrated that the application screen runs off the bottom of the physical screen.  I have tried the options of removing the wall and decreasing the tile size but it doesn't seem to help.

Any experts have an idea of where to start?

Thanks,

Rob

Have faith in the forums - the truth is out there!  big_smile

Thanks for the input guys.

@Philip  - I recently read that Dads rarely read to their children; something that I enjoy immensely and it happens to coincide with one of those ideas that you only get at 3am.  So I fancy having a dabble at popular fiction, aspiring to create a story that I could read to my kids that we all could become entranced with.

I have it on good authority that the hero of the book uses crunchbang too!

Flicck - haven't taken it as a snarky reply.  I too am a master in google-fu; it is how I came up with the apps in that list.  There is a very eclectic mix of people using this forum so the chances are that someone will have first-hand experience or an opinion regarding pretty much any subject you care to mention.  I just thought I would throw this out there and see what came back.

Thanks though,

Rob

Come on guys, this is the kind of freedom we are fighting for!

If there has been a game recently that is likely to shorten the life of my computer hardware this is surely it.  Great game but I have had to take several deep breaths before recreating the 'Bop It' advert with my laptop and the nearest window.

The masochist in me will definately purchase this.

Generally:

Opera - for general web browsing.
Firefox - Because there are still some sites that do not function correctly with Opera and the Ant downloader is invaluable!
Thunderbird - I can see all my email accounts and rss feeds.
VLC - One stop media shop.
WINE - For running Memory Map and Spotify.
Gnome Commander - Works well for me.

But, most importantly:

Cowsay and Fortune - Boosting morale a little bit at a time each and every day!
Fuzzy Clock - Few enough remnants of the British Empire exist, at least my computer can tell the time in the correct manner!

Any thoughts on the various software out there that supports the writing of novels?

Apps that I am aware of are:

StoryBook
yWriter
Writer's Cafe (Not free)
CeltX

Appreciate your thoughts and input.

Thanks Shaq, that is the one I was looking for.  I also found xpdf and qcomicbook to be useful and both support screen rotation too.

Purchased an eee 701 yesterday for £80 and already have cruncheee on it.  Thrilled to bits - everything works!

Any recommendations for SDHC cards to expand the storage?

Small point, I will mainly use this for reading electronic copies of books and such.  I seem to remember someone commenting on a reading app that would support screen rotation and so allow you to read in the manner you would a normal book.  Does anyone have any ideas?  I can't find the post anywhere but I am still looking.

Fully crunchbanged up now!

It's a lot bigger though isn't it?  I really want a small netbook rather than a small laptop.

Well after all the input here and surfing some web reviews I am leaning toward an Aspire One.  The main element of this has come down to price; it seems to be substantially cheaper than most of its competitors.

I will post more after purchase!

All set up on my laptop now.  Looking at the earlier posts about retaining windowing terminals was a concern so I have set Terminator to load at boot transparently and set Xterm to load as my windowed terminal.  Which I am quite happy with at the minute.

Slightly off topic but has anyone used fish?  I couldn't get it to start in its own window but it will work within terminator or xterm.  It seems to be a useful aid for those who don't get their feet wet in the terminal all that often.

I would like one if they are still available.

I have just crawled from my sick bed after a week and am still blinking in the harsh light of day.  A new soundtrack to my day would be most welcome.

It's not on the cover disc but does tell you where to get it.

I agree that overall the review was positive I just felt that the negative points bordered on petty.

Hey, at the end of the day, it is just my opinion rather like the reviewer had his.

Incidentally, if you subscribe you can get the price down to around a more reasonable £5 per issue.

No, it is the KDE issue on sale 5 Feb.

I thought the review was a little unfavourable.  It acknowledges the aspiration of a 'speedy minimalist distro' but then mentions annoyances like the appearance of Ubuntu in the grub menu rather than Crunchbang and the greyscale desktop colouring rather than the caramel (brown) of Ubuntu.  Rather than picking on such relatively minor points I would have been happier if they had praised the amount of work that Philip had gone through to make this what it is.  It is clearly a labour of love for an individual rather than a product of a dedicated team of hackers and should at least, I feel, been seen as a pretty huge achievement.  Who knows where it could go?  Just look at what Clem acheived with Linux Mint.

Crunchbang may not be perfect but it is more than good enough for anything I am likely to do in the near future.  Regardless of the review it will remain my distro of choice for sometime to come.

First experience of Linux was Knoppix toward the end of 2005.  My first installation was Slackware which, surprisingly, went well!  Spent time skipping around Mint, the 'buntus, Sabayon and Fedora on my desktop.  Tried most things on my laptop before deciding on Crunchbang.

Rob

Opera always seems to load sites such as youtube and snotr very slowly.  Aside from that it has always been very capable.

Rob

Good post. Thanks.

Whilst I am sure that we can all work it out anyway I would like to add the following:

1.  the first command should be    sudo apt-get update

2. Java should already be installed.

3.  the link takes you to the Risk clone 'Domination'.  You would need to replace all references to 'Risk' with 'Domination'.

Tonight Pinky, we are going to take over the World!  (Cue maniacal laughter)

Glad to see someone else remembers this game or is at least another fan.

http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/228/H … C+The.html

Abandonia is a great site to get all those long forgotten games of yesteryear!  Lots of memories to be had on these sites.  I use DosBox to run most of them but occasionally, like HHGTTG, they use a .z file format which I use XZip to run.

The original Sid Meier's Pirates! anyone?

Rob

XZip - currently replaying the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.  Probably the best text based adventure game ever created.

As posted I used to have the WRT54G but now I use the default SKY box.  It all works fine and I have no complaints.
