Wesnoth and Freeciv work great on my netbook.  Wesnoth is an awesome game.

Hello!  A friend of a friend has an HP netbook that has Windows 7 installed.  It is very slow and running sluggishly, so the owner asked me sometime to put "that Linux thing you talk about" on it to speed it up, etc.  Of course, my first thought was #!, but I am not so sure.  The person in question to the best of my knowledge has never used Linux before, and I am thinking it might be better to go with something a little bit more like Windows (i.e., a desktop with icons on it, easily recognizable main menu, etc.) that is still quick and snappy like #!.  I am going to fiddle around with some different distros in VB later. to try some out.  Any suggestions?

Edit:  Some candidates:

Linux Mint 10 LXDE
Xubuntu 10.10
UNR 10.04

Happy Birthday!

With regard to your question about missing applications/being able to install new applications quickly, I realize that it's a quick trip to Synaptic/Terminator to do that, but I find it nice when I can just get working straight. Plus, I found the collection of several useful applications in 9.04.01 to be quite nice. It's just my personal preference. smile

Yeah, I understand the sentiment.  When I first found #!, I remember being overjoyed that it came with VLC installed by default.  It is just a quick installation in something like Ubuntu, but it is a bit aggravating going through and uninstalling the media applications that I am just going to replace with VLC.  I guess #! just matches up very well with my personal preferences!  Thanks for the review.

Yes, that is one of my favorites :-) Been using it for a long time.  Happen to have found anything similar?  I really enjoy the darker, abstract wallpapers.

I have the same one, clipped to 1280x1024.

Here's one I found while searching for "Blade Runner" even though I don't recall it from the movie, makes for a nice wallpaper though:

Better yet, the site:

http://www.bestwallpaperzone.com/black-wallpapers.shtml

I'm increasing my supply now!

Thanks a lot for that second link Sector11.  Those are really cool, saved 'em all big_smile

I also found this place,

http://www.pugetsystems.com/alternate_os.php

But they seem waaaaay overpriced ...

Not sure if this has been posted yet, thought you might be interested in reading a recent review of Statler r20110105

Good review, I thought, although I never understood when people thought not including "X" application was a flaw if it is only a matter of 10 seconds in Synaptic to install it.

An infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar.  The first one goes up and orders a pint.  The bartender gives him one, and the second mathematician thinks for a moment and orders a half of a pint.  The bartender looks confused and after giving him one, the third asks for a quarter of a pint.  The barman ponders for a second, gets a pleased look on his face, and takes the half pint from the second mathematician.  He then pours a second pint, says, "I get it," and hands the remaining infinite mathematicians a second pint.

I really love Openbox on my netbook.  It runs smoothly and recognized all my hardware (speakers, wireless card, etc) right out of the box, which is a first for my netbook.  It is also extremely lightweight.  After booting, I am only using 50 MB of memory, and 1% of my CPU.  With Firefox / Chrome (more Chrome now) and one or two other programs running, I still only use about 20% CPU and 200 MB of RAM (have 1 GB).  I highly recommend Openbox, but XFCE will probably give you a pretty similar experience.

Looks like most CrunchBang users are not overly conservative. It's easy enough to have a spare browser on board if any temporary glitches happen anyway.

I agree about the extra browsers. Honestly, I prefer Chrome, and will most likely stick with that.  That having been said, I have no objections to including the Iceweasel 4.0 packages.  I am playing around with Firefox 4 beta and it seems pretty slick.  I will, as usual, tweak what applications/browsers I use as the situation calls for.

Hey there, I am having trouble getting the open source Crafty chess engine to run in SCID.  I have gotten some other chess engines (Stockfish, Fruit, Sjeng) to work well and analyze games, but whenever I try to load the Crafty engine, I get an error message that says "The analysis engine terminated without warning, it probably crashed or had an internal error."  Does anyone know about these programs?  I am not sure if there is something special about Crafty, such that the same process for getting the other engines to work wouldn't work for it.

Thanks for the links!  I will most likely be buying my next computer from Zareason or System76.  I like the simple, solid construction, nice minimalist design, and of course, Linux with pre-configured drivers, etc.

Most vendors have told me that it's not cheaper because Windows is bundled with the machine. They will however remove it or not install it for free hmm Go figure...

I know that is the common line when asking for a refund, but never heard it pulled when asking for a no OS computer.  I will keep hunting around.  I know back a year ago or so, the Dell Mini 10 with Ubuntu was $20 USD cheaper than the Windows version, but they don't seem to carry it anymore.

Does anyone know a good place to buy computers (laptops and desktops) that come with Linux pre-installed, or no OS at all?  Is the price for these machines lower than a typical PC because you are not paying the Windows / Apple tax, or are they more expensive because you are paying for what amounts to a specialty item?

These are amazing, especially http://www.dontclick.it/

What are the coolest, most imaginative, futuristic websites you guys have come across?  A friend of mine is trying to compile a list in order to help her brainstorm for coding a site for her final project in grad school.  Interactivity is a plus, as is ease of use.  Thanks a bunch! big_smile

I am not a fan of streaming music, although I enjoy some Youtube videos (mostly old Horowitz footage, etc.).  One website I like is http://classicalcat.net/ ... you should be able to find all sorts of great stuff on there.

Is it possible to add a pane to Thunar, like the default of krusader.org?  I know XFE has an option to do so, and I really enjoy XFE, but it doesn't pick up any of my external hard drives.

If Civ5 is the only thing you plan on using Windows for, you might want to use Wine and skip the partitioning headaches.  Civ5 has a Gold rating on Wine, which is given to "Applications that work flawlessly with some special configuration".  Just an idea, although I am not sure if the "special configuration" would be as intensive as setting up the dual-boot you want.  Good luck!

Hello ... sorry for the silly question that probably has an obvious answer.  How do I change the default key bindings that Statler comes with?  I use the super+f, super+w. etc., commands all the time, and wanted to add more for my other heavily-used applications.  Is there a particular program that I use to change the bindings?  Thank you!

Edit: Nevermind, I ran a few searches and found what I needed, assuming the rc.xml is still the file I need to edit.

Just a side note; installed Chrome about ten minutes ago.

Asks if you'd like to make it the default browser. I declined, as this is the back-up if I ever manage to break Iceweasel, and for testing.

Asks which search engine you'd like to use as your default; google, yahoo, or bing.

Just like to chime in and mention how much I also like that Chrome asks these things.  Very nice, IMO.

OP: If for some reason the .deb file in Thunar was opening with Archive Manager, I think you can right click the folder and change the default application to open that file type there as well.  A few days ago I had every file try to open with Comix (comic book reader) ... not sure how that happened. big_smile

Hey there.  I am trying to get my speakers to work, and am having no luck.  I am trying to update alsa, but when I try to compile alsa-driver, alsa-lib, and alsa-utils, I get a number of errors.  I have extracted the tar.bz2 files to usr/src/alsa, but cannot proceed after running ./configure.  I think I might have the current version already (1.0.23) but when I try and open a music file in VLC, for example, I get an error message saying that I need to update to 1.0.23-2-g8d80d5f or higher.  Additionally, when I click on the volume applet, I get an error message saying GStreamer has detected no audio devices.  I am pretty lost, anyone have any suggestions?  Thank you very much!
