TitanMech - that worked!  Thanks so much for the help.  I'll mark this one solved.

TitanMech - I just looked for cb-libreoffice-pipemenu under /usr/bin (in fact everywhere in my path) and it doesn't seem to exist.  Perhaps I had a bad libre-office install?  I installed it from the cb-welcome script.

machinebacon - I appreciate your persistence.  Unfortunately the 4 steps above did not work.  I haven't tried entering the block manually, but will when I have more energy and patience.  Thank you again!

KerrMD - thanks for the reply.  Yes, I've done both the upgrade and the dist-upgrade.

When I attempt to open any libre-office app from the "Office" Openbox menu, I get a "Failed to execute command for pipe-menu" error.  A screenshot is attached below.  I am able to open a file in OpenOffice format via Thunar, but can't launch otherwise.

http://www.extraspecialbitter.com/libre-office_screenshot_20120509.png

I did need a key.  Installed like so:

sudo apt-get install debian-multimedia-keyring

...did another "sudo apt-get update" and then was able to install from the repo.  Thanks again for the help!

It seems to be at least as functional as cheese so far, so I'm quite pleased!  big_smile

Thanks for the tips!  I added the wheezy multimedia repo by appending the following to /etc/apt/sources.list:

## DEBIAN MULTIMEDIA
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org wheezy main non-free

machinebacon - I installed camorama and reinstalled terminator and not only did gconf2 install cleanly, but very few additional gnome-like packages installed as dependencies.  Thanks so much for the help!

Looking at http://packages.crunchbang.org/ it appears that there is no waldorf equivalent of statler-mm.  Does this mean that we should use the multimedia repo from Debian Wheezy instead?  I use it for apps like grip and banshee.

Some good news: I removed cheese, rhythmbox and then everything related to gconf2, and the errors all went away.  smile

I held off, however, on installing camorama, since it seems to want to install gconf2 as well:

ivanovnegro - I didn't realize that cheese was a Gnome component.  I don't mind exorcising it in favor of camorama, assuming it provides similar functionality.

Sadly, I did "apt-get clean && apt-get autoremove", followed by "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade" and then "dpkg-reconfigure" but still end up with this nagging error:

pablo@cochituate=> sudo dpkg-reconfigure gconf2
[sudo] password for pablo:
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: gconf2 is broken or not fully installed

Oddly enough, gconf2 was one of the packages listed when I did a dist-upgrade.  Considering that it touches everything (and vice versa) is a reboot required for the changes to take effect?

pablo@cochituate=> sudo dpkg-reconfigure gconf2
[sudo] password for pablo:
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: gconf2 is broken or not fully installed

I'm tempted to start from scratch, but apart from the errors I like the look and feel of Waldorf and don't really want to undo some of my tweaks.  hmm

Also, when I attempt to install gconf2, it tells me that the latest is already installed; and if I want to remove it, several packages that are dependent upon it would also be deleted.  sad

@machinebacon - thanks for the reply.  Unfortunately I still get the same error regardless of whether I run apt-get or dpkg.  Oddly enough, the packages mentioned in the error message (cheese, rhythmbox, etc.) seem to install, but I'd rather not see the error messages at all. Here's the result of "dpkg --configure --pending":

pablo@cochituate=> sudo dpkg --configure --pending

I installed Waldorf on a spare partition for the first time last night.  Everything was going well until I tried installing a package I've deployed without issues in Statler: namely "cheese".  Each subsequent attempt to run "apt-get install" results in a mess similar to the following:

I'm curious to know if anyone has seen anything like this, and if so, if there's a workaround.

As always, thanks to Corenominal for his work, and to everyone on this forum for being so helpful.

Found a ruby script online and modified it slightly:

#!/usr/bin/ruby
require 'net/http'
require 'xmlsimple'

# This script fetches the weather from the Yahoo! Weather RSS feed and prints it out.
# This can be used for Conky, for example.
# By Brian Carper
# http://briancarper.net

RSS_FEED_URL = 'http://xml.weather.yahoo.com/forecastrss?p=02451&u=Fahrenheit'

if RSS_FEED_URL == '' then
    puts 'Edit the script to specify'
    puts 'your RSS feed URL from'
    puts 'http://weather.yahoo.com'
    exit
end

begin
    text = Net::HTTP.get(URI.parse(RSS_FEED_URL))
rescue
    puts "ERROR: Failed fetching RSS feed!"
    exit
end

begin
    xml = XmlSimple.xml_in(text)
    channel = xml['channel'][0]
rescue
    puts "Error: Could not parse the XML!"
    exit
end

temp_units = ' ' + channel['units'][0]['temperature']
baro_units = ' ' + channel['units'][0]['pressure']
wind_units = ' ' + channel['units'][0]['speed']

puts "    Currently: " + channel['item'][0]['condition'][0]['text'] + ', ' + channel['item'][0]['condition'][0]['temp'] + temp_units
puts "     Humidity: " + channel['atmosphere'][0]['humidity'] + '%'
puts "         Wind: " + channel['wind'][0]['speed'] + wind_units
puts "    Barometer: " + channel['atmosphere'][0]['pressure'] + baro_units

The script was invoked via the following snippet in conky:

${color1}$hr
${voffset -3}$alignc WEATHER CONDITIONS
${voffset -7}$hr $color
${execi 3600 ~/bin/current_weather.rb}

Screen shot of the upper right-hand corner of my desktop can be found at this link.

Now that Weather.com is no longer providing its XML feed for free, the conkyForecast logic I have in my .conkyrc setup is no longer valid.  Thanks to this link, however, I've been able to easily get the same type of data from Yahoo Weather in the form of an Openbox menu option, but I still miss having it as part of my conky config.  Has anyone attempted this?  If not, I'll likely give it a try.

By the way, here is the "weather portion" of my current conky config:

${color1}$hr
${voffset -3}$alignc CURRENT CONDITIONS
${voffset -7}$hr $color
${execi 3600 conkyForecast --location=USMA0438 --datatype=CC -i}
${font ConkyWeather:size=36}${execi 3600 conkyForecast --location=USMA0438 --datatype=WF -i}${font}
Temp: ${execi 3600 conkyForecast --location=USMA0438 --datatype=HT -i}

I too was disappointed that the November 2011 and February 2012 #! images didn't feature XFCE.  I'm no newbie, but I had some issues installing XFCE from the repos and making it work the way I wanted (i.e. just like the February 2011 image), so I took the plunge with the latest BPO image and set myself about understanding Openbox well enough to customize it to my taste.  I'm very happy with the look and feel of it, and it positively screams on my cheap and slightly long-in-the-tooth Dell Inspiron 530.  In short, while I very much got used to XFCE, I'm glad I didn't give up on Openbox.  It's a very solid implementation, and I know that the forum offers friendly assistance should I need it.

@ivanovnegro - my repo is still pointing to crunchbanglinux.org.  Should it be changed?  Here is my sources.list in its entirety:

Thanks for the reply!

I've figured it out.  It was this line in my sources.list file:

deb http://packages.crunchbang.org/statler-mozilla squeeze-backports iceweasel-release

I commented it out, and ran "apt-get update" without errors.  Now I'm happily churning away with an "apt-get dist-upgrade".

Thanks for the reply.  I've added the backports repository to my sources.list as follows:

deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main contrib non-free

Then I modified /etc/apt/preferences as per the link above and tried doing an "apt-get update".  Here's the warning I get:

W: GPG error: http://packages.crunchbang.org squeeze-backports Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 85A3D26506C4AE2A

Is there a GPG I need to install before being able to proceed?

I've done a fresh install of the 20120207 Backports image to a new partition on my desktop, but I still prefer the default look and feel of the image from last February.  So... if I want to take advantage of the 3.2 kernel, etc., is it a valid option to add the Backports repository and then perform an "apt-get update && apt-get dist-update"?  I'm having a hard time tweaking XFCE on the newest image to my liking.

When I set the Desktop Icons setting to "File/Launcher", the icons miraculously reappeared.  Interestingly enough, they vanished again when I selected "None."
