it did.

thank you very much!

apt-get upgrade yields:

Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/adobe-flashplugin_10.2.p2.092710-1_amd64.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I can't uninstall any packages due to this. Flash doesn't function. Chromium doesn't work either.

help?

thanks for the help (and the compliment)!

hi,

where is Thunderbird? tried searching Synaptic, as well as just doing the regular apt-get install thunderbird (and mozilla-thunderbird), to no avail. why isn't it in the reps?

installing the latest drivers (190.53), it complains a bit about not finding libglx.so.xserver-xorg-core, but installs properly. though it doesn't work... I get six screens. so I have to uninstall it. though when I now start gdm without the driver, the screen is sort of pushed to the right, if you get what I mean. I do rm xorg.conf to solve this. now I'm back where I was before I installed the driver.

yeah that never got solved, so I decided to remove the driver and start from scratch with a step by step thread. I will try that. thanks.

it started up in low-graphics mode and I had to choose "use generic configuration" and reboot. I tried using "create new configuration..." again but it booted up in low-graphics mode, so I had to use the generic thing. no nvidia-driver active.

when I activate restricted drivers 180 and reboot, I get this unpleasant error screen saying that it doesn't work and that I need a new xorg file, and get the choice between using a generic, backup or new file. so I choose "create new based on my hardware", and it does, tells me to reboot. and when I reboot, X starts up without using the nvidia driver.

is there a way to make this work? or is there another way to get a higher resolution?

my xorg.conf:

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously
# in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings
# here are ignored.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
    Monitor "Configured Monitor"
    Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

I've tried that exact guide to no avail. X complains about not finding any screens.

that gives me two screens instead of six. almost equally annoying.

the driver is installed and working just fine. X didn't start at first because it couldn't find any screens, so I deleted xorg.conf and it worked fine. it definitely runs the nvidia driver, because I have seen this problem described elsewhere.

right now I have deactivated the drivers, but I ran nvidia-settings prior to this, and yes 640x480 was the max resolution. not that *that* was the biggest problem compared to the six screens...

without activating the nvidia driver I can do 1280x720 according to grandr, which looks awkward because my card can do higher.

I tried using both the newest available driver in the package manager and the one on nvidia.com but both yields the same result; six screens 640 x 480 each. any ideas?

my boyfriend about CrunchBang: "it's Ubuntu done right". I even like the default theme, it's all just perfect. after a year of using CrunchBang, I feel like no operating system can ever be any better. /#! fanatic

thanks for the help, it's all good now.

so do I. but that doesn't explain why Diablo II (via wine btw) would show that instead of the proper address. this only happens with Diablo II.

I run dhclient and get an address properly, but when I start Diablo II it says that my address is 127.12.34.66, instead of e.g. 10.0.0.*.

what is wrong?

when I use a jack or headphones on my laptop, there still comes sound from the lappie - in addition to the hphones/whatever connected. it wasn't like this three days ago, and I haven't done anything with any settings.

I used the --noauto option smile

yay, it's working. thanks!

it says yes.

hi. I used the restricted device manager and installed the 177 drivers, but when I tried to start a game, I got a message saying: "3D acceleration : not found". what's wrong?

hi, don't really have the time to find out this right now but here's the ifconfig of Xubuntu:

hi,

I'm considering switching from Xubuntu to CrunchBang (a lot), but when booting the live CD it seems wlan0 is recognized as an ethernet controller?

any help would be appreciated, because I need a guarantee that wlan will be working with CrunchBang before making the switch.

here's some code for you:
