Isn't there an option or a variable in any apt-get configuration file in which to specify the packages you would like to ignore during updatings? Like the IGNOREPKG variable in the pacman configuration file in Arch: it would be really useful, letting you avoid all the nuisance of using synaptic, which I personally can't stand!

Yes, it could be another good solution too! It also happened to me not to upgrade for weeks!

Squeeze at the moment is still at the "testing" phase, bugs are being fixed and sometimes packages are removed, so dist-upgrade is probably necessary right now to keep up to date.
Yea I know and that's why, if you want to upgrade correctly and totally, you must launch a dist-upgrade: otherwise your upgrade will be partial.
I am only arguing that, if at a certain moment you don't need a certain update which requires dist-upgrade, you can worrilessly decide to skip it, sticking to a simple upgrade.
I suggest to do a dist-upgrade only if you have the time and will to deal with eventual problems/fixings.
Otherwise, if possible, you should decide to run a simple upgrade.
Obviously, that's only my point of view: it's a bit of utilitaristic, but quite useful I believe!
I've always used #! at full power also with a simple upgrade when I did not need a complete dist-upgrade.

#! 10 is already quite "lite"! The lite idea made sense when crunchbang depended upon ubuntu, but it's pointless when it comes to debian.

As expected, you're quite daring anonymous, aren't you? You go at full arch-way! ![]()
Anyway, I would do like Ceil does: a simple apt-get upgrade: this simply upgrade packages without pulling in any other new packages. If new packages are needed to upgrade or others need to be removed, it doesn't upgrade the package you're trying to upgrade.
At that point, if you really need to upgrade that package we're talking about, you can do a dist-upgrade, which will pull in and remove all the needed additional packages.
Anyway, it is also true that in rolling release full upgrades (dist-upgrade) maintain the system fully up to date, since the system changes really fast and very often, but they can be risky sometimes.

Re: Grug.cfg gives me only one choice when booting. (14 replies, posted in Devel: CrunchBang 10 "Statler")
Often, when grub.cfg has some menu entries whihc are not actually displayed, it is cause those menu entries are wrong!
First of all: can you post your grub.cfg please, otherwise we don't know what we're working on!
Also, please tell us which partitions #! uses (and with which mountpoints).
After you've done so, we can start thinking up something, otherwise it's impossible.
Also, it's not necessary to reinstall grub from mint: you can always use chroot to work like into your #! from mint!

Re: Editing/Adding items to the menu in xfce? (10 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
Applications should be automatically added to the Xfce menu (this is one of its advantages over openbox). I'm not sure if there's a menu editor or not (but it seems likely there is).
they're working on a menu editor for xfce4! Anyway, if you have to add an app manually to the menu, you have to create a .desktop entry in /usr/share/applications.

Re: How to upgrade kernel? (4 replies, posted in Devel: CrunchBang 10 "Statler")
Try launching sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and, before typing "y", check if there is a kernel upgrades in the packages to download. In this way, you should install the latest kernel in the repos.
But also, before executing a dist-upgrade, I would wait for someone more expert than me to answer you: often, launching a dist-upgrade is dangerous.
Also, you could check the packages that shall be dowbloaded with dist-upgrade and, if a kernel upgrade is present, cancel the dist-upgrade and install the kernel only. I did it so some weeks ago.

Re: blank screen at gdm / X startup after update && upgrade (17 replies, posted in Devel: CrunchBang 10 "Statler")
No worry: it's a pleaure! It rather would be a pleasure to solve the problem itself!
Also, if the radeon drivers don't work, I would temporarily deactivate gdm and try manually starting X after login: sometimes login managers can be some nuisance!

Re: blank screen at gdm / X startup after update && upgrade (17 replies, posted in Devel: CrunchBang 10 "Statler")
I see... Try with the xserver-xorg-video-radeon instead and tell us what happens.
Anyway, if I were you, I also would try by backupping my xorg.conf like xorg.conf.bak and reboot the system without a xorg.conf file and letting #! autodetect the settings.

Please be more clear: whihch is the key binding issue you're talking about? Are you referring to the gnome-do keybindings or to the system ones (ex.: alt+f2 to start apps)?

Re: blank screen at gdm / X startup after update && upgrade (17 replies, posted in Devel: CrunchBang 10 "Statler")
So: it really seems like a kernel/graphic driver problem. I also had one some time ago and I had solved upgrading to the very last version of the kernel.
Anyway, the first thing I would try would be to see if your system works with the opengl ati driver installed. That would be my first try!
If that does not work, I surely would downgrade the kernel: I know that's not a solution, but these are common problems among rolling/semirolling release distros: you can't do anything but accept it! It's the counterpart for having last up-to-date cutting edge software!
Anyway, try removing fglrx and using the opengl drivers first.

Re: [SOLVED - Do your updates before posting. Another duh.] GnomeDO error (5 replies, posted in Devel: CrunchBang 10 "Statler")
Yes, it's possible. Now I switched to Xfce, but I had gnome-do running with openbox before.
First of all: have you executed any upgrade in the last days as well?
Second: can you see in your "rc" folder if dbus is executed at startup? Maybe tere will be only hal, cause it autonomously call dbus in when loaded, but I think it could be better to know this.
Also, I would try to autoremove and purge gnome-do, rebooting and trying to reinstall it as well. If you get the same error, I would also try to install banshee (only after a full upgrade though): I don't see the connection between gnome-do and banshee, but you alway can't know for sure!

Thanks snowpine! I read the manpage for apt-get a lot of times ago: maybe something (most maybe the things I considered not so useful at that time) slipped from my fingers! ![]()
Btw: isn't dist-upgrade known to be, ho to say, a little "buggy" or to cause some conflicts (often critical)?

Why dist-upgrade? Wouldn't a simple upgrade be enough? Can you explain me the difference from upgrade and the usefulness of dist-upgrade? I've never got it! Never executed a dist-upgrade in my entire life!

Mmmmmm... I don't think so... I only have arch under my hands right now, but if I try to completely remove abiword here only two packages are taken away... I don't think it should remove all those packages... Are you running #! with the default openbox wm? Or have you installed any other desktop?
