here is a good resource http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=882596 . For the video player question go to the framebuffer applications and look at the section on mplayer.

thnx, that's been quite instructive

i think i remeber corenominal saying he doen's like icons overmuch
well, i've come to share that sentiment too; i don't use panels, docks,
pagers ... (otherwise i wouldn't have adopted openbox: it simply doesn't
need them)

indeed i've discovered ncurses interfaces' powerful minimalism, that sort of
finger-tip-ism bridging one's neurons with the computer's devices and data

trying to see if i can play audio video from txt console
[ie with X not running]

audio works great with mocp

vlc runs this way:
vlc -I ncurses [--browse-dir /filebrowser/starting/point/]
audio is ok
but (expectably) video is -- how shall i term it? -- grossly "mosaicked"
(i'm on 1280x800 [16:10]; 2.6.31-14-generic, grub2)

is non-X terminal screen resolution adjustable somehow?
in fact, is that the sole responsible factor?
-- is it fixable at all? is video watchable from text console?

thnx for any relevant suggestion

was looking for some lightweight photo-touchup app
and ran across this website

just to let others know about it, in case they don't

hi, just to let you know

i've at long last been able to install an Ubuntu Minimal Desktop
by using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) netboot image and
i'm now setting it up to have a lighter system than CB lite

with pcmanfm i'm having the same file-association problem

Running Sudo Graphically -- What's the Issue? see
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/graphicalsudo

thnx for your attempt and letting me know, corenominal

i've googled this issue and searched many forums
but found nothing

this affects root-menu (W-space) but not client-list-combined-menu (W-Tab)

1st underscore in menuitem is not given room, following are rendered correctly

instead of

example_of_menu_item

it shows

exampleof_menu_item
       ¯

is that fixable?

thnx

why not

update
¯¯¯¯¯¯
it appears that NetworkManager was the real problem
for me

i installed wicd (which automatically removes NM) and
have since glided as smooth as oil

no autostart.sh line has been necessary

nabilalk wrote:

How do you remove splash and quiet from the Grub menu? What config files do I need to edit? Thanks.

startupmanager: Grub and Splash screen configuration

StartUp-Manager configures some settings for grub and splash screens
(Currently only Usplash). It provides an easy to use interface.

It is originally a Ubuntu project, adapted for Debian.
Canonical does not provide updates for startupmanager.
Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community.

looks like segfault is taboo here -- when mentioned people go away

asus eeepc 900 HD

for what i can tell, my NetworkManager-not-running
problem doesn't depend on nm-applet in autostart.sh,
it is still there after i disabled it by commenting it out

what i get with dmesg | grep error is

[ 5.887243] ahci: probe of 0000:00:1f.2 failed with error -22
[ 43.923376] NetworkManager[5143]: segfault at 0 ip b7b44323 sp bfb1ac2c error 4 in libc-2.8.90.so[b7acd000+158000]
[ 53.800432] lxsession[5556]: segfault at 0 ip b7ebcd88 sp bf9863dc error 4 in libc-2.8.90.so[b7e46000+158000]

can anybody help me to sort this out?

thnx

edit

the lxsession segfault line is also present when i use
my other notebook, an HP 510

... Power button does not work as expected ... just kills the battery icon in the system tray ... How could I fix that?

Speaking of shortcuts, what does "super" mean?  (super + w, etc.).

A = alt, C = control, W = Windows key (super ... Bill).
you can also use Escape and Delete, etc.

ok, it seems you were right
i've given nm-applet 1sec more and it works,
thnxs

still, dmesg error is not empty

~$ dmesg | grep error
[ 5.870727] ahci: probe of 0000:00:1f.2 failed with error -22

is it anything the matter?

as often as not when i log in from booting
the NetworkManager icon in the panel is 'x'-ed
and a click on it shows the message:
NetworkManager is not running...

if i look into dmesg, i get the following:

dmesg | grep Network
[ 42.804086] NetworkManager[5042]: segfault at 0 ip b7b82323 sp bfb5734c error 4 in libc-2.8.90.so[b7b0b000+158000]

i can get connected to the internet by

sudo dhclient eth0

rebooting doesn't always prove effective

any help?

once again i repeat: forgive me, 'cause  i'm inexpert

I could be wrong, but I have a feeling that this is possibly being caused by calling pcmanfm --daemon-mode too early from within ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh (...) Any feedback on whether or not this fixes the issue would be greatly appreciated.

i've commented the entry to see what would happen:

# pcmanfm --daemon-mode &

after rebooting,
[un]mounting in pcmanfm works exactly the same as before;

what's the purpose of calling pcmanfm --daemon-mode
in ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh?

thnx

thnx for patiently following my Pindaric digression

great

now please tell me:
is that file there because of lxappearance or can it be saved to disk and work independently?
in other words, is the font setting possible without lxappearance, ie just having ~/.gtkrc-2.0?

ok, thnx

now, i see [in menu.xml] that *preferences >> user interface Settings*
executes *lxappearance* to let us graphically interact with these settings

i wish i could know where on disk the font setting is saved
-- does anybody know which file has that?

hi everybody & thanks in advance for any consideration about this post

my *font[-size]* question is:

via ObConf (openbox configuration manager) user can change fonts for
- active & inactive window title
- menu header & item
- on-screen display
which i all set to *8* (*sans* & *regular*)

i wish i could use the same font for the text *within* any windows
[which i think is defined as system font] -- how can i do that?

in synaptic i've been able to use what i wanted via:
settings>>preferences>>columns&fonts>>use custom application font
-- but how can i get on it if a customization option is not available?

thanks

asus eeepc 900 HD
Intel Celeron M 900 MHz at normal speed [non-underclocked]
   160GB hd

i know there are issues with eeepc & i'm not using the array kernel
(i've tried it out & had these same problems)

so, what about this:
often times, after logging in from [re]boot i get:

- almost invariably *network manager is not running*
- less frequently: *error: unable to establish connection with FAM*
*do you have FAM or GAMIN installed & running?*
[fam isn't installed but gamin is]

the only (very frustrating) workaround i know of being:
shutdown [+ disconnect from power] + remove battery
+ insert battery [+ connect power cord] + boot

any helping advice? thanx
