I think I installed using that package in the repo. It basically downloads the binary then converts it into a deb.

I saw a Nike ad with a guy asking questions and him looking like a puppy that had just shat on the keyboard of his owner's newest, shiniest laptop. Was that for real? Did it get released?
Good luck to his wife, she's got some spunk in her. More women in this world brandishing sand wedges and it'd be generally a better place, methinks.

Iceweasel might have been slow on startup. Not sure about page loads, I can't compare as I don't have blazing-fast internet.

We had same question a little while ago in relation to wikipedia entry - I suppose same answer applies: wait until release.
With an alpha or a beta now and again, and not being side-tracked by this issue and that, I'm sure that enough people will get wind of the fact that CB has now gone the Debian route. It was mentioned in the DW newsletter, and look how the hpd has shot up.

Re: adblock vs dogooder vs adchange (6 replies, posted in Off Topic / General Chat)
I knew what Adbock was but I never had any idea that Dogooder and Adchange were Firefox extensions and I consider myself something of a junkie.
Links:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/54200
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/57992
I've never used Adblock, I do all my ad-blocking using a self-tuned hosts file and there isn't much tuning to be done since I block javascript and flash.
Before I go on:
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic
tart-page/
With just a simple hosts file I never found myself much bothered by ads. But in the last 12-18 months I've started to take a much more inclusive stance. I quite like the ads that I do see - gives me an idea of who's doing what, a handle on the "zeitgeist" if you may. The ads on the Crunchbang site (Google) are great, very unobtrusive, even when (frequently) pushing toilet partitions. Reminder to the zealots who've been playing whack-a-mole with ads since 2003: There are no popup ads anymore. Well maybe for the one-handed surfers there are, but not for the rest of us.
From what I just read of Dogooder it's ethically unsound, IMO.
Hopefully Adblock makes it easy to unblock Google ads and if not, hopefully the ad-zappers are listed here:

Hi, I had commented out conky from my autostart.sh--normally i would start it manually after about an hour of uptime
Just wondering, why do you do that?
I am very grateful to the makers of these utilities, and needless to say, the Mint and Crunchbang communities for educating me as to their use.
Probably worth a donation huh? How 'bout a pic of you or mrsmzsade in a #! T-shirt!
(I know, not strictly Crunchbang but I do wonder sometimes if Philip's bought up the rights to Conky.)

You don't want an alias to phpmyadmin in www if you're going to make it public. Look in /var/www and see if phpmyadmin is there. I don't know how apt-get does it. If you can't find it then remove, download the tar and extract to www - then you'll definitely have phpmyadmin.

Re: Forum modifications: brute force protection (54 replies, posted in News & Announcements)
I think the (enforced) changing of passwords is a good idea in the corporate world. A few years ago we were having such problems that we made the accountants change their passwords every month. It's also good practice in light of the problems these forums have experienced, especially for m* ... oh i'm not allowed to use the m word.
Also very advisable if you've recently logged in over unsecure wifi. Not sure why https login isn't implemented ... there's a shedload of computing power on that server. Is it the cost of a cert? How about a self-signed? What kind of messages do the major browsers put up for self-signed certs these days? Are they prohibitively scary?

I haven't checked it out yet, but another user on Raiden's Realm recommends the configuration mania Firefox addon for more tweaks without using about:config
... and without using that malware being promoted on your whacky bihlman.com site. If you're being at all above-board about this you'll put a warning next to that link.

Topic: Suspend troubles (2 replies, posted in Devel: CrunchBang 10 "Statler")
I never had much trouble getting 9.04 to suspend and the first install of Statler would suspend reliably - it'd even go to sleep automatically after the set time interval which I thought was really great. Then I borked it all up - I think installing Jupiter was what did it - and it came time for a bit of distro hopping followed by a reinstall.
With the reinstall it wouldn't suspend. Well it would but it always woke up after 12 seconds. I thought what had changed from before and the only thing I could think of was that I now had a swap partition and before I didn't. Interestingly the swap was never used no matter how hard I tried. Another interesting thing was I couldn't get the memory to go over 200MB even if I opened every application in the menu.
So I tried 'swapoff', still the same. I tried commenting out the swap in fstab and rebooting, still the same. Then I deleted the swap partition - I'd never got it to hibernate and I knew creating the swap for that was pushing my luck - now it's very interesting - it'll suspend when plugged in. When running off the battery it suspends then wakes up after 12 seconds.
I guess I should go for the reinstall. Unless anyone has any ideas. I was wondering whether to try something like this:
http://wiki.debian.org/Hibernation/Hibe
_Partition
Also someone mentioned Tuxonice - what's the procedure for installing that? I'm hitting the road tomorrow so I'm running out of options.

Re: Decluttered (3 replies, posted in Off Topic / General Chat)
So 1990s - I tried stuff like this years and years ago - now I've got over this phase. As a peripatetic I place more stress on being able to setup/packup in 5 minutes flat. I also appreciate the ability to switch off each of those wall-warts at will, individually. Flexibility and troubleshooting ability ranks highly - and do you really want your modem and router under your desk? Thought not. The other overwhelming feeling is that I definitely wouldn't want to sit at and much less type at those desktops and keyboards in the pics.

Re: Statler Post Install Script (8 replies, posted in Devel: CrunchBang 10 "Statler")
I've been thinking of putting together a post install script for Statler that would add some options that some users might find useful.
So far my thoughts are:
* Installation of OpenOffice
* Installation of CUPS, printer admin tools and driver packages like hpijs
* Installation of the Java Runtime Environment
* Installation of community artwork packages
* Network Browsing Support??? At the moment I'm finding a combination of gigolo and nautilus installed with no-install-recommends a reasonable solution. Each step would have yes/no options
Any other thoughts/ideas? All contributions gratefully accepted
Nice. Definitely make sure each option is yes/no. A 'friendly' Nautilus would be great. Scim and Asian fonts. A collection the lightest apps from Gnome (I've listed in another thread). Xfce-ggodies. NTP. Blueman. Xfce4-taskmanager, BUM.
Gawk, mesa-utils, build-essential, etc, etc
Tor, perhaps polipo.
A bunch of non-free repositories: Google, Opera, Skype, Bluefish, Vbox, ...
CPUfrequtils - or something to change processor to 'ondemand'.

Maybe there's something to be said for a somewhat minimal Crunchbang system this time, with wiki articles, or scripts even, for adding various optional functionalities - printing, Chinese/Japanese/Korean support, graphics editing (Gimp, Inkscape...), audio editing (audacity...)
Indeed. I always add Asian support whatever OS I'm on - although I'd add the 20MB of Asian fonts before adding the 9MB of printer support. Gimp is definitely an extra.

I kind of like this idea. Personally, I would much prefer to keep printer support as a post installation choice. As mentioned by omns, I really do have a complete phobia of printers and I never use them.
Same here. I never use printers. Keep post-install. Bluetooth: yes: Printers: no, Java: no.

The time has come to ditch my beautiful, super sleek HP Pavillion DV5 laptop... It's always had some sort of issue with just about any distro I've tried on it
Haha another one! I'm on the point of giving mine up too - for a 'netbook' so Nvidia nor ATI will likely figure in my decision. (Oh i can report that Lucid Xubuntu suspends *and* hibernates - after a fashion. It's using Nouveau.)
So I am now in the midst of selling the HP to a friend who needs a newer more powerful laptop,
You said 'friend' right? ![]()
Place some faith in Nouveau, or delay just a little (not too long, I know what it's like living with a dv5000).

Re: swap memory with a solid state drive (15 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
What's with the quest for the everlasting storage device? News flash: Writing lots of files reduces the life of your HDD.
Google it. It's just FUD. Any observed effects are demonstrably just as prevalent in magnetic media and will not in any practical sense shorten the life of the hardware.

Re: swap memory with a solid state drive (15 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
I'd advise against using swap on an SSD. Flash memory, which is basically an SSD, has a limted number of read/write cycles, having swap on an SSD can lower it's life span AFIK
Warning: May contain traces of FUD.

If you're using Statler, replace the packages.ubuntu.com url with http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/build-essential
If using Statler you already have build-essential and gcc.
(So assume 9.04)
