Topic: Stalter w/ Sid repos and a Liquorix kernel.

I've been looking into Statler since I've heard you guys will be using Squeeze's repository. Now, I was just wondering if anyone has set it up with Sid repos and installed a liquorix kernel instead. I'm sure many of you are wondering, 'pft, why even bother using #! then?' Well, I'd love to use Openbox with all the neat little scripts that have been created. I just can't be bothered setting them up for Debian at the moment. Although, it would save me the time from setting up a new distribution. hmm

Input?

Re: Stalter w/ Sid repos and a Liquorix kernel.

I've been using Statler for since September and have been using the Sid repos and a liquorix kernel. So far, I haven't experienced any noticeable breakage with Sid. In terms of the Liquorix, it runs fasts, but I've had problems with the latest 2.6.36 kernel. I've done a little research, and I'm pretty sure that the problem has to due with .36 itself, not with Liquorix (I've noticed numerous general bug reports related to .36). In my experience, 2.6.36 caused huge problems running dual monitors -- where I run an external monitor connected to a laptop. I've been running Liqourix 2.6.35, and it's worked without any problems.

Also, I forget to add that smxi is a great resource for installing and removing Debian and Liquorix kernels, and it's a great way to reconfigure your drivers after a kernel upgrade.

Check out http://smxi.org for more info.

Re: Stalter w/ Sid repos and a Liquorix kernel.

Hey thanks for your input. I've just started using Liqourix about a week ago. I just couldn't be bothered compiling everytime I wanted to try a new kernel. I like new software, hence why I'm using Sid. tongue But for the time being, I've actually decided to stick with absolute Debian. I just don't see the need for a new distribution at the moment. I'm sure I can achieve the same Openbox setup with a little time. As far as smxi, I've heard of it but never actually looked them up and tried the scripts. With your recommendation I think I will now.

Thanks again!

Yes, of course, many of us have experimented with Sid (we are like that here on the forums, always breaking things smile) and you can read about my experiences here:

Re: Stalter w/ Sid repos and a Liquorix kernel.

Agreed ... I have been using #!Statler-Openbox since day one.
On day two switched to using Sid.
Day three, came the Liquorix Kernel.

I am still using the  original install of #!
Still using 'unstable' and an now using the 2.6.36 Liquorix Kernel.

Not had any problems.  cool

Correction:  As been stated, I had some minor glitches when I first installed the 2.6.36 Liquorix kernel (the day it was released) but, I dropped back to the 2.6.35 kernel for a couple days, then back up to 2.6.36  They must have fixed the problems quickly, not has any problems since.

Statler/Sid here! Tried the Liquorix kernel, but it wouldn't get along with my NVIDIA driver (which I stupidly got from NVIDIA's website because I was lazy), so no X. sad

Re: Stalter w/ Sid repos and a Liquorix kernel.

I converted last night to Sid repos and the Liqorix kernel! I haven't noticed too much of a difference on my fast box, but the Pentium 4 computer definitely is a little snappier when streaming music and compiling.

isidor_swe, what problems were you having with the NVIDIA driver? Which one were you using?

Re: Stalter w/ Sid repos and a Liquorix kernel.

Oh, I don't remember now. Something about the different versions of the driver - I didn't have the one that the kernel wanted, apparently. Or something. Oh, well. Probably my fault for not doing it the Debian way. And I've got pretty good performance anyway. But still...
I might try again when I don't have so many other things to do, and let y'all know exactly what sort of error message I get. But for now, it's not really a problem.
