No desktop...in which sense? No desktop wallpaper? Or no desktop management?
you can't place anything on the desktop
CrunchBang uses Openbox as Im sure you know and Openbox does not support icons on the desktop.
im in pclinuxos right now
its the openbox version and it does have icons on desktop
The icons are probably there because of PCManFM or some other program. Openbox by itself does not provide that functionality.
Maybe it's iDesk?
So it is possible to have icons on your desktop if you want them - you need to add something to put them there. An alternative to pcmanfm is xfdesktop - it'll bring in some xfce dependencies though, and add to the RAM usage a bit.
i was just distro-hopping again and just wondered how come it had icons
still searching for the lightest usable linux i can find
Try Puppy Linux
i remember trying that but i had problems with packages
As mentioned by anonymous you can have pcmanfm control the desktop which will place icons on it. The ability to do that is in the Preferences somewhere. I haven't used pcmanfm in a while so can't remember the exact location to set that option. Perhaps someone else can give clearer instructions ![]()
For v0.5.x, iirc it is PCManFM -> Edit > Preferences > Desktop.
For v0.9.x, I think you have to run "pcmanfm –desktop-pref".
