Topic: QT Apps

I noticed that one of reasons for using totem over VLC is because its a QT app.  I suppose the same could be said for Skype, but is there a viable alternative?  Has anyone tried Ekiga 3.0?  I do not currently use voice/video, but I have read that Skype is a little shaky in Linux...

I have installed VLC on my system myself... is it not supposed to work?  I didn't realise - I have watched one video and it seems to work alright.

VLC should work fine...  The reason for my post was that I read "VLC removed in favour of Totem — VLC is now a Qt4 app :(" in the release notes...

I was just pointing out that Skype is also a Qt application...I am asking if Ekiga 3.0 is a viable replacement.

Ekiga is available, but not version 3.0, see: http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/ekiga

Regarding Skype, I am all for using alternatives and I will when I can, but sometimes it is either not practical or possible. As I see it, Skype is one of those applications which has a lock-in service attached to it; if I want to talk to family and friends and they use Skype, I do not really see that I have an alternative to using Skype myself sad

Also, it should be stated that Skype is really the only application included in the default install which has given my conscience a good workout. The free software enthusiast in me dislikes including it, but the pragmatist in me has no issues with it neutral Is that bad?

Finally, regarding VLC, I think it would be great if we could get it back into the default install. Maybe I was being a little too vane when I omitted it. Having said that, it would be nice if we could alter the default Qt4 theme so the application sits well with CrunchBang's dark GTK+ theme. Anyone up for the challenge?

Of course, VLC is quite popular - so getting it back in the default would be quite nice smile
