Topic: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" r20101205

There are some new Statler images available. The new images are basically updated Alpha 2 images and do not feature too many changes. Any existing Statler users should not need to perform a reinstall, instead a simple 'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' should suffice (note, if you have done this within the last couple of days, then you should be there already).

As mentioned, changes from the previous alpha images are minimal, but here is a list of some stuff that has changed:

  • The artwork has been updated to reflect the recent website redesign.

  • The Xfce variant now uses Xfce's native panel by default. tint2 remains installed.

  • The Openbox variant has had Orage replaced by gsimplecal.

  • The Openbox variant now features johnraff's "places" and "recent files" pipe menus.

I am sure there have been a bunch of small fixes applied too, but nothing noteworthy.

I believe some of the better known Debian Installer bugs still exist, namely the language settings that are chosen during the install do not stick. I will try and resolve this in the next release. Also, I have performed numerous test installs with USB sticks using this method. The dd method has worked 100% on every test installation, so I figure it is probably best to call it the recommended method. I have not done any testing with Unetbootin.

Also, I have set-up a new BitTorrent tracker and seedboxes, if you would like to help by seeding the new images, please do as all help is greatly appreciated! smile

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" r20101205

So performing a 'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade', would be like taking my current system and revamping to the new as like I had downloaded it and fresh installed it? So no need to even DL it and make a new partition? Sorry I am new, but thank you for keeping us posted and putting in all this fantastic work core!

Yes, apart from any changes you have made to your personal files, e.g. desktop wallpapers, tint2 and conky configs etc.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" r20101205

No wonder an apt-update last night made the grub and the gdm splash look different, I am digging it wink
And thank you for clarifying that for me Core.

It is a fairly simple operation, just download the new images via BitTorrent and leave your client open when the images have downloaded. The client should then start seeding the images so that others can download them. If you do this, you may or may not want to limit the "upload" speed of your client, so that it does not consume your entire connection. Hope this helps. smile

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" r20101205

Ok, what I figured. I shall do so, thank you for the easy explaination. But I won't lie I have relatively slow ISP, but it is the thought that counts right? wink

It certainly is. Although it may change now that there are official torrents, despite my slow connection I've had a lot of upload for the Alpha2 torrent. If you want to seed constantly but don't like having the transmission window floating around I recommend checking out Rtorrent (http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/rtorrent).

On another note very glad to see this new release out. I really like the new naming convention. The massive variety in the stability connoted by alpha/beta/stable across software has (perhaps regrettably) rendered the convention quite meaningless.

Not to mention it arrived just in time for my "new build." (A free P4 tower thats getting a pci sata card to hook up lots of storage to create a home server and backup solution.)

Ah nice one. I'll guess I'll do something unpredictable and download the Xfce image wink

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" r20101205

@corenominal, I used Unetbootin from the squeeze repo (471-2) to transfer the Xfce4 i686 image to a 1G USB stick and am happy to report that I am posting from it now. I haven't installed it as I don't have a free partition right now, but everything seems to be working fine. I had to boot with nomodeset as I have an Nvidia GeForce 6150 GPU, which was to be expected. My Belkin wireless adapter is working flawlessly out of the box, as it did in the previous Statler release.

I'm curious if it was your decision to add a second xfce4-panel to the left side of the screen and set it to autohide or if it was an oversight. With the default wallpaper it's invisible, and it wasn't until I opened Iceweasel that I saw a tiny black line and wondered if my screen was going bad.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" r20101205

I'm still on statler alpha1 on my laptop with custom tint2/conky/openbox-gtk-themes/icons/grub-splash-screen etc and I doubt that I'm going to do a fresh install anytime soon (by the way can I build a recovery cd or something in case of a break????), BUT I like the new default colors, themes, backgrounds that came with the new release*. Very nice work (as usual) Philip.

There is one thing that I would love to import to alpha1 but I don't know how: the smaller and nicer fonts during boot and shutdown that came out with alpha2. Is there a way that I can change those fonts without altering the whole system?

*EDIT!
