Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

Does anyone have any advice on making a USB install persistent? I usually use LiLi which has an option to create persistence when available. It did recognize Statler and offer to create persistence, but when I select the persistent menu entry on boot, it doesn't work. I can only seem to boot in live mode and I'm not sure why.

Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

You need to hit tab and edit the startup command for the persistant entry in the menu. Change "/live/vmlinuz" to "/live/vmlinuz1" and "initrd=/live/initrd.img" to "initrd=/live/initrd1.img"

Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

I'm using the latest 32 bit OpenBox version of CrunchBang (downloaded from CrunchBang).

I've tried installing it using Unetbootin.

The Default option doesn't boot for me.

The Live option does, but, has no persistency.

I've tried:

creating a separate partition (ext2) as has been recommended

and

creating a "casper-rw" file (of varying sizes)

either way, I've also either Tab (edited the startup options on boot) or modified syslinux.cfg accordingly - to no avail.

I haven't tried lili, Universal USB installer, Debian install, or Live CD install.

Everything I've done references the downloaded ISO.

This isn't just a CrunchBang problem.  I've had comparable problems with different versions / distros of Linux.

What's the best way to fix this or the best distro (or both way and distro) to fix this?

It's not often that persistency doesn't matter (maybe USB isn't the best way to address this) or perhaps it's intended primarily for a full install to HD that just Linux never intended to get beyond full install to external install (USB, External HD, etc).

I'm still fairly new to Linux having migrated from Windows.  I've looked at Fedora, Mepis, Slax, Puppy, Lubuntu, Mint (LXDE, KDE), Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, AriOS, PinGuyOS and they've all had their respective Pros and Cons not the least of which is persistency.

What am I missing?

Thanx

Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

Have you tried dd?  I don't see that in your list.
http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/statler … stallation

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

After using the dd method i want to go back and use the stick as normal storage. How can i format the stick ? It says allways "read only" and in gparted the stick doesn't show up sad

Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

Plug in the Stick goto Gparted in the main manu Gparted, goto Refresh devices, then same place and devices, you should see the stick. Normally the standard format is Fat32

It doesn't matter what i do, the stick is allways shown as read only....so i'm not able to delete or reformat.

Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

If I installed crunchbang from USB using Unetbootin where default and live session didnt work is it ok or I should reinstall it via burning to cd?? I can log to crunch but..I guess maybe I have some errors or smth? U said "Using unetbootin can cause several problems including grub and login errors. " ??

Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

i used unetbooting and i did not have any problems during installation.First i installed #! to my acer aspire one,and then to my desktop computer. No problems at all.I just wondered how fast and easy it was.weird?

there is something what may help?or not.

http://wiki.geteasypeasy.com/Install:_f … k_manually

or you can always try another usb-stick.

Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

my success with usb and information about subsequent install:::
HARDWARE:  acer aspire one netbook with 160gb hardrive.
i was unable to decipher the "dd" instructions correctly -too new to linux.
i tried using my ubuntu install to format usb drive -couldn't figure that out.
downloaded and used a gui linux program for live cd install -no luck.
i switched to windows xp (i had xp and ubuntu on seperate partitions) and
tried "LiLi" - incredible interface and the people behind it have worked incredibly
hard - however,  no success in the end.
downloaded "win32imager" and ran that -wouldn't recognize the .iso file.
changed .iso in filename to .img -  program ran it's course and installed the .img
on my USB stick. the stick was formatted as fat32. than could not "put away" my
stick as some process was "using" it. took the thing out anyway.
i restarted with usb plugged in and went to BIOS using "f2" key on keyboard. i moved
the USB drive to the top of boot order. saved changes and continued out of BIOS.
than i was able to run #! from the #! prompt/install screen coming from the USB stick.
i ran it live "failsafe" and was able to go on net immediately with ethernet cable.
in my next message i will describe my experience installing on my hard drive from USB stick.
thanks
wil

Just tried it with a 32bit install. Couldn't be easier. Note that the betaarchive page gives steps for a previous version of #!, but the principal's the same. And persistence is automatic, how cool is that!

Cheers,

Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

This was incrediably useful for me. Thank you!

Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

I have for the first time been able to make a liveusb that works using the dd method posted by omns.  I have a couple of questions.  One, why is it that I cannot see any thing on the usb drive when I mount it in ubuntu?  Two, When I followed the directions to get the listing for my usb drive.  Then I unmounted the usb and ran the dd command.  It reported the there was no media found.  I mounted the usb drive reran the dd command and it worked.

I am writing from it now and is working very well.  I was really thrown when nothing showed  on the usb drive.  but I tried it anyway and it works.

Thanks Kelean.

Yeah, the Debian graphic installer. That's what I did with my persistent usb install of #! aswell. I also confirm that it works and it might be the easiest way to install #! to a usb stick. The part about grub is important to do correctly, otherwise it won't work and you might bork up your current hdd install. It can be fixed, but it better just not to bork it =o)

Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

EDIT: Nevermind, I simply wasn't following directions.

So I tried the dd way and my terminal just started spouting garbage for about 10 minutes. Normal?

Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

Usually nothing would be thrown out. Not even "....."

Check the command again or copypaste it here.

This used to be a nice place.

Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

Yeah, it was my bad. I was doing

 if=/dev/sdb

instead of

of=/dev/sdb

Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

My acer aspire one didnt take too kindly to the install. I tried multiple times to boot from the usb but there was a grub error each time. I'm going to try installing #! 9 now to see if maybe that will take.

Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

I followed the instructions in http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/statler … stallation to the letter, but can't get #! installed on my netbook eeepc1005 (not dual-booting; there's only an older Crunchbang on there that I want to replace with the latest one).

In BIOS I set "removable device" as 1st to boot, but the older #! on HDD simply starts grub and boots roll
EDIT: after hours of pulling my hair out (so to speak ;-)) before posting this, I finally found there are TWO settings I need to adjust in this BIOS's setting big_smile
Proceeding to install...
2nd EDIT: Now I do get the menu for live session, text install, etc, but... choosing either text install, graphical or live session... nothing happens after Enter; it's frozen hmm
3rd EDIT: Finally got some result choosing fail safe option, and found out that I shouldn't haven taken the 64-bit version sad
Can I erase the whole post please? cool

You can use the Debian installer to perform a full install on a USB stick. One of my spare computers with a busted hard drive is happily running Statler from an 8gb flash drive. The only "gotcha!" is to watch you install GRUB on the correct drive; in my case this was not a problem, since there is no internal hard drive any more. smile

How do i get Debian installer do i have to download the cd 1 and then when installation start i just have to select the crunchbangxxx.iso to install? Could you be a little more specific about? im an ubuntu user so i have no big skill about linux, pls be patient ^^

Re: CrunchBang 10 Statler ISO image to USB in Linux

^ You need either two USBs or a blank CD and a USB.  I'll detail the 2-USB method below.

1.  Download the Statler ISO via the link from the main crunchbanglinux.org page.
2.  Follow the instructions here to copy the ISO to a thumb drive.
3.  Remove any internal hard drive on the computer that you use to install Statler to the second USB.  This is important, because if the installer finds Ubuntu or Debian or Windows or any other OS it recognizes on the internal HD, it will add that OS to GRUB.  This can of course be "fixed in post", but it can get messy.
4.  Boot from the LiveUSB image and select either graphical install or text install.
5.  Insert the target USB.  When the installer gets to the partitions setup portion of the script, the target USB and the liveUSB should be the only devices it sees.  I'd suggest installing with / and /home in a single partition on the USB drive, with no SWAP partition.  Either ext4 noatime/relatime or ext2.

i have lubuntu already installed on my notebook, so unetbootin is available easy so :
with ubuntu on your system and 1usb key 3.9G:
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … e-usb-key/

Make two partitions on your USB key, one big enough to hold the live CD image and the other the rest of the stick. (disk utility from lubuntu: delete old partition and create 2 partitions fat and ext2)
from terminal:
# mkdosfs -F 32 /dev/sdc1
# mkfs -L live-rw /dev/sdc2

Using unetbootin (synaptic to install) copy the downloaded crunchbang.iso from hard disk on the fat partition in usb.

Once unetbootin finishes, reboot on the USB key.  Choose live and then hit TAB to edit.  Add the parameter "persistent" to the end of the line and all changes you make to the system will be saved to the live-rw filesystem on /dev/sda2

reading the link above and using lubuntu looks great, perhaps i have to learn how to mount the HD partitions now sad im newbie!
