Topic: Absurd:Crunchbang to KDE!

Like many things in life, it happened quite by accident! As the result of installing Mint KDE (Isadora) on my daughter's laptop after a Vista meltdown, I was, surprisingly, greatly impressed by the integration and quality of the core applications and the overall user experience of KDE. Quite shocking after my 2 years or so of minimalism on Crunchbang. I never thought that I would consider using, let alone install, such a "bloated" desktop environment and core system on my humble atom nettop. But it chugs along very nicely and responsively and I have been enjoying its many refinements.

Perhaps as the new year approaches I am at another crossroads in life and the time is only ripe to move on to another experience. From minimalism to maximalism: well not exactly, but I am amused by the irony of it. Time I think to shift distro shade from dark to blue, if you get my drift. Perhaps other areas in my life may well make similar shifts in direction!

I shall continue to check out the very informative crunchbang forums and would like to thank all those who have helped me during my time here. I shall continue to follow Corenominal's project very closely.

It has been a real pleasure.

Re: Absurd:Crunchbang to KDE!

More than a few of us continue to use not different versions of Linux, but other OS's as well.

It all boils down to a matter of taste and what works for you.

I would suggest using OpenSUSE, as I think they use KDE as their 'default' desktop, and are therefore better integrated between the kernal, distro, and desktop. Just thinking that eliminating the most amount of variables that could go wrong is never a bad idea...

And just because you're switching doesn't mean you have to leave the forums, either. Going down the road of "my way or the highway" leads to... um, Apple?

I have been keeping an eye on KDE for a while. I thought the early 4.x releases were somewhat iffy, but the latest releases have been great. Good luck with your KDE adventures! smile

+1, everybody is welcome here, regardless of which OS they use. smile

I am too a lover of KDE and the minimalism desktops with Openbox and similar window managers.
There is nothing wrong about that. wink

You should actually be able to run Openbox as a WM inside KDE ;-)

Re: Absurd:Crunchbang to KDE!

@merellyjim I shall certainly check out Opensuse in greater detail as I agree with you that fewer variables should lead to greater stability.

I shall certainly be around the forum as it is such an informative and friendly place. I think I just needed to get this "kde confession" off my chest. big_smile

Re: Absurd:Crunchbang to KDE!

I'm not so sure about OpenSuSE as a nice implementation of KDE. I've always found OpenSUSE to be a bit slow, bloated and their admin tools clunky. I think you'll find Mint a much better option or even just a plain KDE install over the top of CrunchBang. You'd pretty much just get the default Debian KDE desktop that way. Other implementations of KDE that are quite interesting are SalixOS  and the Chakra Project.

I never liked KDE4, but I only tried Mandriva's. I had good experiences with PClinuxos Gnome, and I hear the KDE is even better.

When i started with linux some 3 years ago, KDE was my first choice, as it resembled more to the familiar windows than gnome, xfce and all the likes. And yes, PCLinuxOS (and -now discontinued-  XandrosOCE) seemed the best choices at that time.

I don't think, i'll go back though... cool

I've used it a few time over the years, never for much longer than a few months, but I'd leave it because when looking for additional software, lots of Debian packages out there, few YAST - the SUSE package manager.

Re: Absurd:Crunchbang to KDE!

Not to bring up this topic but i do have that exact question as I am currently using opensuse and do find it bloated, but also miss deb, back to the point I like the new #! with debian and would like to install it but wanted to find out how easy it is to add kde to it? essentially I have two alter egos, one loving the kde interface and then the other liking simplicity of openbox to get stuff done with less distractions. Anyway look forward to the responses

Hey, mv
I would start here: http://openbox.org/wiki/Help:KDE/Openbox

Re: Absurd:Crunchbang to KDE!

@boromeus that is a good place to start....and I like the idea...though the way I thinking this out is to actually have two separate log ins one for home and one for work on the same device this way I'd be able to eliminate distractions and resources hungry widgets.  though before I decide on the switch i may test out kde/openbox at the same time.  However I remember having problems with that in the past on my old macbook converted into a linux box but no way to find out ithout trying smile

Re: Absurd:Crunchbang to KDE!

@mv - I'm not sure what you are asking. If you want to install KDE then:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kde-full

Re: Absurd:Crunchbang to KDE!

Then you simply install KDE and that's all.
When you log into a KDE session, you'll get KDE; when you choose Openbox, you get Openbox (Desktop icons won't work).

Re: Absurd:Crunchbang to KDE!

I am a KDE 4.x user as well and it has improved greatly since its debut. I've been exploring minimalist distros for a while as I just want to do things without the desktop getting in the way, not to mention helping revive older systems

Re: Absurd:Crunchbang to KDE!

Every time I give a KDE distro a spin, I get stuck almost immediately at the menu layout. "Why isn't the next submenu opening?" I wonder as I hover over a menu item. "What, I have to click it? What the...?"

Is that something that KDE users just get used to? Is there a setting to enable a submenu to open on hover? I is confoozed by it, it makes not the sense to me.

-edit- BTW, this thread should be in WM/DE Talk

Let me get this correct. If I install KDE on #!, I can choose:

  • Openbox/Xfce

  • KDE

  • KDE with Openbox/Xfce

Now if I had installed KDE but logged in to an Openbox/Xfce-Session, will KDE be loaded? Will my memory usage shoot considerably up?

Re: Absurd:Crunchbang to KDE!

Openbox will not load KDE. Xfce might load some KDE stuff if you tell it to; however, I think the option is disabled by default. So really, KDE libs will only be loaded if you start a KDE app.

Re: Absurd:Crunchbang to KDE!

Just make sure to avoid KDM, which WILL load KDE stuff you won't need.

Re: Absurd:Crunchbang to KDE!

I was a "die hard" KDE Fan for a number of years.  When I installed Debian Woody, Gnome actually crashed with right mouse button clicks, so I installed KDE and ran with it.  This was my first experience with Linux and Debian, so I needed to concentrate my work (Java development under CVS control) rather than "debug" configurations.  From Woody, I went to Sarge, then Kannotix (I needed 64 bit and it was the only distro that understood my hardware with debugging it).  This was KDE 3 (and it's variants)  I ran with KDE until KDE4 hit SID (I was using sidux at the time) and took a step back and looked at the desktop.  My primary apps were Java apps (NetBeans, jEdit) which had the GTK L&F and Thunderbird and Firefox which were GTK based, too.  So my desktop looked (to me like Frankenstein's monster).  Nothing against the functionality of KDE or whether is easier for Windows users to migrate to it, etc.... all DE's have pluses and minuses.  So what did I do with Frankenstein's monster?  I burned it by installing Mint/Gnome, Mint/XFCE and #!XFCE (I like DEs too much to go whole hog openbox. tho I have tried it).  As for Frankenstein's monster?  I find that even on my gnome/xfce installations, I still run K3b;)

Re: Absurd:Crunchbang to KDE!

ah....hmmm....hey....just want to shout that the only place i liked KDE was PCBSD...that was some time ago, then later releases of pcbsd werent so great...but since then i havent checked in a while....you may wanna give it a try?

Re: Absurd:Crunchbang to KDE!

Will do... I always like to "swim against the tide".  Even here I run XFCE, when traditionally it's been OpenBox.  On PeppermintOS I replaced OpenBox (in LXDE) with MetaCity, to get the cool Nimbus LAF and composing....  And I ran with Mint 9 KDE for a while.  I too, liked PCBSD,

Re: Absurd:Crunchbang to KDE!

What I'd really like to do is install KDE 4.6 on top of my #! setup, but it looks like it isn't possible at all in Debian yet. Can that be right?
