Topic: Statler -upgraded to sid w/ Xfce 4.8

The next version of Xfce4 pending release is 4.8.  Until then, we have 4.8-pre releases available and thanks to at least one ambitious individual we have Xfce4.8-pre3 debs available in Hadrets sid & UNRELEASED repo

I started with a fresh installation from crunchbang-10-20110105-openbox-amd64.iso

You're going to need to upgrade to sid and pull a few items from experimental.  Probably not what you want to do on your primary OS.  wink  My sources.list:

#Unstable
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ sid main contrib non-free
#deb-src http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free
#Experimental
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ experimental main contrib non-free

Add Hadrets repo to a new list

nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/hadret.list

# Secure APT wget -O - http://hadret.rootnode.net/debian/duckbill.key | apt-key add -
deb http://hadret.rootnode.net/debian/ unstable main
#deb-src http://hadret.rootnode.net/debian/ unstable main
deb http://hadret.rootnode.net/debian/ experimental main
#deb-src http://hadret.rootnode.net/debian/ experimental main
deb http://hadret.rootnode.net/debian/ UNRELEASED main

Save that file, get the key

wget -O - http://hadret.rootnode.net/debian/duckbill.key | apt-key add -

Upgrade to sid 

apt-get update
apt-get remove <whatever>
apt-get dist-upgrade

Install Xfce4.8-pre3

apt-get install -t UNRELEASED xfce4-panel libexo-1-0 xfwm4 xfce4-session xfce4-settings xfce4-utils xfce4-notifyd xfce4-appfinder thunar thunar-volman orage -t experimental libglib2.0-0

Then just log out and back in choosing Xfce4 as your session.

* Notes
Not everything Xfce4 is available from hadret.rootnode.net but the main items are.   
There is no Xfce4 metapackage in the UNRELEASED repo but it is not required.

$ apt-cache policy xfce4
xfce4:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 4.6.2
  Version table:
     4.6.2 0
        500 http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ sid/main amd64 Packages

I noticed in the above instructions the code mentioned in capitals at the beginning UNRELEASED

apt-get install -t UNRELEASED xfce4-panel libexo-1-0 xfwm4 xfce4-session xfce4-settings xfce4-utils xfce4-notifyd xfce4-appfinder thunar thunar-volman orage -t experimental libglib2.0-0

Will this upgrade me to the current stable version of XFCE or something else entirely?

I haven't used these packages in some time now but when this post was made Xfce4 wasn't final.  The UNRELEASED is actually the version just like stable, testing or unstable.  The package maintainer simply decided to give it an ALL CAPS title - presumably to get your attention.

Sorry for responding to a somewhat old thread, but will this code allow me to the new XFCE 4.8?

That code will only work with the Hadret's repo (read the first post). Currently Xfce 4.8 is available in Debian experimental though.

I think Corenominal is right--the changes in Gnome 3 and Ubuntu are going to be driving lots of folks to XFCE 4.8. They've done all the right things in keeping things resource-friendly and traditional for those of us who don't want our computers to resemble a smart phone smile
