They won't be in the Squeeze repositories.

No, that method is too messy for primary system, so I will probably wait for stable 4.8 source tarballs and compile them myself. Thanks anyway ![]()
According to the Xfce.org Release Schedule for version 4.8
The expected 'stable' release date is : January 16th 2011.
From this thread in the Debian User Forum -- Xfce-4.8 is expected to also, be released as a .deb
And there are instructions on how to download it from Sid (unstable) and/or compile it from a .tar.bz file.

Guess it can be out by tomorrow then, looks very promising. I might even make to move to sid to try it out, or will Corenominal include it in the #! repo?
How can I install this in Statler? I guess I have to download the .tar.gz from the website and compile it?

According to an aptosid team member, Xfce 4.8 is not going to hit sid until after Squeeze is released.
But there are packages available on the Xfce website. I guess we can compile them ourselves, no?

Hadret's repo would be easier.
If he updates the packages, that is. Let's say he did, I guess I could add his repo and install it from there?

That should work. If it was me I wouldn't install 4.8 over an old 4.6 Xfce. I'd be tempted to install the openbox version and add the packages to that or build up a Debian netinstall. Hmm, that would make a nice script once the packages hit the sid repos.
Xfce-4.8 was released as 'stable' today!!

Sure would! Keep us updated on that!
But just to be sure, what about running an OB session of #! and removing all the XFCE packages from there. Then compile all the XFCE 4.8 stuff from the XFCE website or install through Hadret's repo?
Question for corenominal
Now that Debian 6.0 Squeeze is released and a matching #!Statler release has, also, been uploaded for us ... when might we expect to see the new Xfce-4.8 DE added to #!Statler ?
Do we have to wait for Xfce-4.8 to hit the 'testing' repros? Or will you be working on a new updated Xfce-4.8 version of #! ? ![]()

Xfce 4.8 will never be added to #! Statler, since Statler is based on Debian Squeeze, which is now "stable." You'll have to add it yourself (using one of the methods mentioned above) or wait for #! Waldorf (based on Debian Wheezy).

But ... Philip can add Xfce-4.8 to the next #!Statler (updated) release . . . whenever that is.
If he wanted to.

^ That would be so awesome! I definitely vote for that one
I'd like to see it stay with stable although it should be a relatively easy task to upgrade when the packages hit sid. From memory I read somewhere the other day that there will an upgrade meta package developed by the Debian Xfce team.

That would be a disservice to users who enjoy using the rock-solid, well-tested software of Debian Stable, in my opinion.
But obviously I agree users should feel free to upgrade to the newer version, if they choose. ![]()
I'm talking from experience here, it was the same situation with xfce 4.6 and Lenny - better wait for backports - they might take some time - my guess is a long time, but they'll most certainly work without any hustle on user's part (as far as that goes for debian, after all). ![]()
^yeh I remember the first version of xfce4.6 had a number of bugs, which got fixed in 4.6.1 (was it?). If you don't desperately need something in 4.8 I'd hang on a bit. (The xfce mailing list has had some comments about bugs lately.)
I'm another stability fan I guess ![]()
Xfce 4.8 is in Debian experimental now, so it may reach unstable soon, then testing.
For all Debian Stable lovers (I'm one of them): do not forget debian backports!
Previous Debian Stable, Lenny, was released with Xfce 4.4 but then Xfce 4.6 entered its backports...so, we only have to wait a little ![]()
Maybe wait a little more likely wait a lot, it is still Debian we are talking about. ![]()
